This wine is developing nicely. Interesting blend, reminiscent of Pomerol as said by earlier review. Very long length with nice complex layers. Chocolates, truffles, and mild fruit. Very rich, creamy and soft hints of oak (not overpowering). I am giving it a higher score than others, perhaps due to the extra year's maturation from last review. That said, couple of more years in cellar could improve it even more. But, drinks well now! Going back for more.

Brought to a restaurant for some friends, so it did not get a proper decant - surprisingly tannic, opened up a bit during the course of the meal but next one will be sure to decant for several hours first.

Blackberry jam, chocolate, oak on nose. Definitely new world, but also has complexity with strong mineral elements of old world cab blend. Very smooth tannins with notes of black plums, earth, spice. Nice persistent finish.

I first had the Blackbird Arise at Betony and was then very impressed with the weight of the wine. The 2007 Illustration clocks at an impressive 14.5% and pours a dark purple, almost black, color with the faintest of crimson. The wine possesses long, thick legs. On the nose, the alcohol is sharp and along with it comes a heady aroma of currants, kirsch, blackberry jam and wet earth. The palate of the wine is beautiful as the tannins, although prominent, are integrated well into the wine so the astringency is not apparent. This a merlot-dominated wine is a fruit bomb and there are notes of plums, cassis, cocoa and currants with moderate oak. Finish is very long given the robustness of the wine. There isn't much acidity to speak of and this is exactly what you would expect from one of the Napa heavyweights. It will be interesting to see where this wine ends up in a couple of years as the tannins settle down further.

solid, robust, fat wine with a little bit of unbalance with regard to the alcohol. 75% merlot, 15% cabernet franc, 10% cabernet...tasty and easy to drink...big, mocha, cherry...

From half bottle and showing very well. Blackberry and plum, with a little spice on the nose. Palate has a nice core of plum with a little pepper mixed in, fine acidity and a nice polished bit of tannins in the background. Moderate length finish, pepper, spice, and toast. Tight, balanced, and seamless. I really enjoyed with right bank blend, with the cab franc adding a nice layer of complexity. I don't think this is quite at peak, but quite accessible.

Very interesting ... Decanted for approximately 45 minutes. Unassuming nose of light anise. Deep, dark, purple color, and very smooth. Light oak and plum. Delicious. 45 minutes later the tannins started to show and the flavor profile intensified. Fascinating. I'm going to allow the remaining inventory to age at least another 2-3 years.

Popped and poured at Bistro Jeanty in Yountville. Full bodied, fruit forward wine. Good finish. Still too young. Needs another 3-5 to come into balance and should hit its prime in 8-10 years. Below average value.

Soft, and polished, the tannins are ripe and silky. The wine delivers sweet, black cherries in its open, round finish.

big, bold merlot blend--with gigantic floral and brick aromas....layers of complexity, still young, but a little bit short on the finish. well-balanced with a Pomerol style

DC/Northern Virginia Off-Line II - "Blind Reds: Favorites vs. Underdogs" (My home, Falls Church, VA): Tasted blind. Last wine of the lineup and oh is it a winner. So utterly smooth and deep. And delicious. And deep. And did I mention deep? This was one of my favorites and it was the group's WOTN among 18 wines with 4 out of 9 tasters putting it in their top 3 including 2 first place votes.

Bassins 28th Annual California Barrel Tasting (Mandarin Hotel, Washington, DC): This turns it up a notch, with a red fruit profile, fine polished tannins, and very long finish. Blackberry and cassis dominate the palate. Impressive wine that will need some serious time. 92-94+

Bassins 28th Annual California Barrel Tasting (Mandarin Hotel, Washington, DC): Barrel sample, not a final blend. My final wine of the day and what a way to end it. I seriously had flashbacks to tasting the ’11 right bank bdx EP. The cab franc dominated the nose and palate with an herbal, slightly green, killer nose that was both classy and powerful. The palate was more laissez-faire, and much less concentrated than the ’10, but was also much more expressive at this stage. Not a wine for everyone, as the green/herbal edge of the cab franc will likely turn off many Cali drinkers used to polished perfectly ripe fruit, but I found this to be a fantastic expression of the vintage and the most interesting cab franc dominated wine I’ve ever had from Cali. 93-95

great bottle of wine - had it along side of the Blackbird Paramour, similarly well-balanced wine - slow-o for two hours, then a decant after dinner - slightly more tart than the Paramour but both are wonderful.

The "Pomerol" inspired wine. Now that is a delicious wine. Big and rich, lots of new oak too (75%), but it seems to handle it very well. Massive in that Napa way, but well done for all of that.

Solid merlot, existing notes capture it well, although I found the tannins a bit more prominent. Just can't see the pricing here relative to Pahlmeyer or Switchback Ridge.

Blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc

More a blueberry & blackberry jam nose with notes of espresso, licorice and smoke.
Full bodied wine with a lush textured, sweet, creamy palate. Not the best finish.
A big, fat boy with a lack of acidity. Not my favorite style. Way too expensive for what it offers.
