7/3/2021 - Eclectic Palate Likes this wine: 91 pointsPicked up a bottle of this at Spectrum wine auctions as a learning experienced. Allowed to rest two months after shipping. Cork in pristine shape, and based on how the wine showed, it's apparent that this wine was properly stored in a temperature controlled setting throughout its life and representative of how the wine should taste. Flash decanted (granular sediment as the wine was at most only lightly filtered) as I expected the wine to fade, which was not the case at all as there was still a respectable level of tannin and abundant fruit in the red spectrum; primarily raspberry with slight cherry. No oak showing, and only slight secondary aromas or tastes which makes me think the wine has not yet peaked as I would expect a properly stored bottle to start showing more secondary traits in 2 to 4 years. If I had this blind, based on how non-evolved the wine was, I would have thought a 2013 Napa, rather than a 2001. The back label notes are clearly accurate as Michael indicates that he focuses on low yield and balance. Low yield is apparent based on the incredible longevity of this wine, and balance is demonstrated by the 13.5% alcohol. |

The wine seems light at the beginning; yet, that is a mirage. As you take in the sip, the tannins explode in your mouth and the finish is long and smooth with no alcohol bite whatsoever. The wine is drinking outstanding at this point, even though it may be pushing the drinking window. Thinking back on the nice private tasting we had with Kristi Seitz at the Soda Canyon Store in May 2010 during our visit to San Francisco, Napa, and Sonoma. |
