open for a couple hours then decanted for 3 hrs, and still took half a bottle to begin the evolution into a beautiful light bodied and so perfectly put together wine. Not large in any sense but the balance of flavors/acid and tannin were perfect at the end of the bottle. Not much of the balsamic element, more floral and cherry/strawberry with a touch of tar to add body.

Decanted for an hour before drinking. Lighter color with the age noted. Amazing nose of spice and tobacco. The taste revealed hints of dark fruit, soy and bacon fat. I have had this wine before directly after opening and there was a clear difference in decanting. Merry Christmas!!

What a great white label. Sweet red fruit (largely cherry) on the nose. Dusty soil, coal dust on the palate with hints of dry orange peel and licorice. Perhaps currently more shut down than the other '96s, which is most obvious on the palate, but this is good wine. Smooth, sweet and suave.

Pnp. The wine had more intensity and youth than the asili 97 probably because it was not decanted. I enjoyed the meatiness and the fruit profile of this barbaresco very much. The dried meat, tobacco, and dried red fruit on the palate were focused and long. The asili 97 was more expressive in relative term. A long decant would be appropriate if you consume now. Long life ahead.

Dusty ruby rose, some bricking, color deepened with air. Pretty and floral up front. Tannins and acidity noticeable but not obtrusive. Mid-palate and finish a bit clipped. A charming middle-weight

Agree, not ready. Decanted for 1 hour and needed at least 2 to unwind even a bit. Nice light ruby color. Nose of tar, blueberry, violets, licorice, musk. On the palate exhibited tar and plum but was simply imploded until the second hour, when some delectable sweetness and tarry tannins came out to play. Moderate acidity, stern tannins, longish finish but still a baby. If you are going to drink this wine, decant for a very long time.

While many Barbarescos and Barolos are consistently powerful, deep, fruit concentrated and well structured, Bruno's goes one further to integrate silkiness, smooth and long lines of flavour and a purity that hints at the finest of French wines. Long distinct finish and a complex alluring nose.

Less pruney and burnt than the last bottle. Great fruit but more noticeable tannin.

HDH auction tasting at Tru (Chicago, IL): Oh god, this is what nebbiolo should be. Phenomenally beautiful nose with dense floral aromas and a bit of earthiness as well. This is showing exceptionally well on the palate with a lot of florals still. The tannins are still coarse so I've no doubt this will be able to age for the long haul, but based on the sheer cerebral enjoyability of the wine today, I'm very, very bullish.

Not even close to ready. Lock this up for at least another ten years. There is some softening to the structure here, but this remains very primary, a pool of mute fruit that one day will be excellent but today is showing at best a light dusting of curry powder, even as the outside has a gentle face. No change over night. With Greg at Fietri, Gaiole in Chianti.

The nose on this seemed slightly burnt and pruney. This came and went over the 2 hours, but the flavors were bright, fresh and youthful. Dark fruit, vanilla, roses, fresh tar are front and center with a pretty noticeable dose of tannin. This is so fresh and youthful. Medium finish.

Again this shows how Barolo/Barbaresco from top producers need many many years before softening. Decanted for 1-2 hours before drinking, this was tightly knit with bruising tannins. Surprise for a Barbaresco but not a surprise from Giacosa. Excellent potential here from the dry extract and a complete wine. Not so enjoyable at the moment, tt just needs time, plenty of it.

Where the Aisli was lacy and impressed with elegance, this had the grace but with more power, expectedly. More menthol and depth, darker fruited and with a powerful almost meaty side, with some cooler herbal notes.Deeper and more impressive, but only slightly less finesse than the Asili. This has power and grace and all comes together nicely, in a more come at you vintage style. Beautiful and early peak. 95 pts

Tasting dinner at Christies (London) with Bruna Giacosa. Limited notes.
Mature smokey nose. Sweet fruit on entry, wild strawberry, concentrated smooth tannins. Has hit its plateau of excellence - now and for a couple of years to show at its best.

Initially this was totally closed on the nose, but opened up quick to display red fruit, some dried flowers and tar. On the palate this was a raspberry cream asphalt sandwich with more and more of the soft red fruit coming out over time. Super elegant and pure with a lingering finish. Really delightful.

Christmas dinner at Søllerød (Søllerød Kro): Still young and crisp with solid tannins and the tight dry style combined with small red berries and a sigh floral character . Nebbiolo of the old school, very clean, elegant and supple . Recognizable as Piedmont, guessed as Giacosa - but I thought it was barolo.

Barbaresco (New York Vintners, NYC): Double-decanted then slow-o'ed at 10am. So dark and black and expansive. This wine takes it up another notch. The depth is amazing. Riveting and expansive, with a finish that goes on forever. Giacosa could have made all his Barbarescos as riservas in 2001, but since he only wanted to have one, this is it. Amazing. A great wine.

Barbaresco (New York Vintners, NYC): Double decanted, then slow-o'ed at 3pm. Smoky black and red fruit nose. Tannic, backward and structure. Amazingly so for a 98, but the fruit is showing and this wine has surprising elegance given its power.

Barbaresco (New York Vintners, NYC): Double decanted at 1pm. Fragrant nose of roses, meatloaf, and fruitcake. Dense tannic structure. Really impressive and long. Giacosa did a great job of getting enough structure into his 2000s. I think they will hold up long than most other 2000s.
