Arizona, you say? Yes, Arizona. Don't think Phoenix or Tucson. Sedona, with elevation and a climate you don't associate with the heat of the desert. Very light-bodied, fruit forward, floral, with some dark cherry and playful acid. If you want to surprise your wine-drinking friends, or stump the resident know-it-all, a fun wine to include in your collection.

Intense tropical nose decorated with honeysuckle and sandalwood. The flavor, however, did not live up to the high expectations set by the nose. Palate was very subtle with hints of asian pear and white chocolate, light-medium body. Perhaps it's worth a try for the novelty.

Merkin/Caduceus is one of the few Arizona wineries that I have found that make wine worth buying.

12.5% alcohol; grapes from Willcox, Arizona; fermented in concrete barrels; bottle has a screw top, medium to long legs, medium to dark red; nose of roses and spices; medium body with taste of roses, raspberries, celery; sweetness integrated into the whole in a complex way, all the way to the long finish; pair with red meat, cheese, or even afternoon sweets

Smooth, easy drinking red blend. Paired well with turkey tenderloin first night, then chicken tikka masala the second. Lightened up just a smidge on the second night.

Lost in the cellar for... a little while. Was surprised at how good it still was. Still had some dark fruit coming through, light smoke, some notes of sage, and plenty of texture.

I love this wine and it’s shape shifting legacy. Try a glass at opening, a few hours later, and the next evening and I would believe they were from completely different bottling.
Earth background, lots of evolving fruit tending toward overripe strawberry, herbal notes sneaking in with lavender and slight vanilla, but very light oak. Easy and just plain fun to drink and let it change with each sip.

Unique blend of 70% Riesling, 20% Chardonnay, and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. 100% Arizona fruit from Buhl Memorial Vineyard in Cochise County. Nice refreshing table wine that paired well with spicy pork ramen.

Vineyard at 4300 ft, aged in French oak, 13.2% alcohol. 95% sangiovese with 5% cabernet. Round and cherry forward with an integrated toast aroma. less tannin than I would suspect but nicely balanced acid and fruit. Pleasantly surprised by this wine, and nice to see some well done domestic sangiovese.

Nice fruit on the nose. Black pepper on the end. Light in body. Dark fruit on the palate. Some say they taste terroir, but I didn't get that. I don't see it cellaring long. I'm curious to know how old the vines are.

Tasting flight at The Art of Wine, Sedona AZ.

Merkin, Chupacabra 2019. GSM blend. Big nose. Hard to place: red fruits, more pinot like, but a bit kerosene? Decent. Nice tart berry, acidity. 87

Chateau Tumbleweed, Cousin IDD 2019. Bordeaux blend, cab dominant. Nose kind of dusty, some raspberry behind it. Not a lot there on palate. Innocuous, meh. 82

Deep Sky Vineyard, Big Bang Malbec 2017. Deep color. Blueberry on the nose, raspberry too. Soft on the palate, but feels “manufactured”. There with some of the “value” Argentinians. 87

Flying Leap Vineyards, Union 2018. Bordeaux blend: cab franc led, with cab sauv and petite Verdot. Good red fruit nose, with some green there. Definitely get the cab franc on the palate. Good juicy acidity here. Drinking fine but might improve with another year or two. Favorite of this tasting. 89

Laramita, Dos Compadres 2019
50-50 primitivo and petite sirah.
Deep ruby. Nose was a bit eye watering initially (maybe the 15.5%?) but mellowed. Dark fruits. Soft but medium/big palate. This one got much better with air! Decent. 87

Merkin, Chupacabra Blanca 2019. (Riesling with little bit chard and sauv). Big nose. Wild notes of pear and grassy scents. Promises more than it delivers though. Not much there on the palate. 84

Bodega Pierce, Malvasia Blanca 2019. Honey and floral nose. Bit waxy on the palate. Drinkable is best I’d say. 80

Chateau Tumbleweed, Descendants 2019. Subtle nose, has white fruits, maybe something tropical. Pleasant, would have a second glass. But pretty light, not a lot there. 83

Bodega Pierce. Chardonnay 2019. Nose has apple and pear, but subtle. Nice but very light on the palate. Liked it. 87

Laramita Cellars, Viognier 2019
Good nose. A little bit of honey, white flowers. Nice wine. Classic viognier waxiness, although fairly light. Liked it. 87

I put this food friendly wine to the test with several different combinations this week, with overall good results.

Pho-worked well until I began adding hoisin and chili to flavor/spice up the broth, and flavors began to clash a bit

Street Tacos (braised beef, refried bean, onion and cilantro)-I think the Rosado would do well with most Mexican food, this was a good match

Pepperoni and Onion Pizza-pepperoni spice put up a challenge, but the Sangiovese base in the wine did well to hold up against it

Frittata with mushroom, bacon, tomato-probably the best match, rich flavors of eggs, cheese and other garnish all combined seamlessly with the fruit and acidity of the wine

The winery changed their label to provide tech information and the year in review for weather / growing. The label states that it was a tough year for the vineyards due to inconsistent weather. That being said, they managed to put a pleasant, dry wine into the bottle. Great for everyday drinking.

For $50 this could have been an 89 point wine... and that’s rare that I deduct for value. I’m always impressed by how good Caduceus wines are in spite of the price I pay for them.
