Chalk Hill Red Bordeaux Blend more

Decanted. Deep, full black-garnet color, brightly toned with a thin, clear-garnet edge. Aromas of black currant & black cherry fruit, with leather, pipe tobacco, clove, black tea and star anise. Blackberry and currant on the palate, cool-toned, open & ripe, with secondary notes of baking spice, cedar and paprika. Medium-to-full in body, refined density, moderately long, with medium acidity and thick, plush tannins, moving toward a medium finish of black fruit and anise. Still very youthful, nice expression of fruit with perhaps a bit more tightness to the structure than I recall from past bottles. Nicely balanced. Drink/hold.

Opened for an hour (no decant). Consistent with previous note, still tasting very well, slightly less fruit. 90-91.

Maybe a trifle sweet for me at this point, but a nice divergence from oak bomb/over extracted napa cabs. Medium weight, dark black raspberry, nice acidity, subtle tannins.

Tasted at a local shop with the husband and wife founders/vignerons from the winery. This wine is a blend of the 5 typical Bordeaux varietals…CS, CF, Merlot, Malbec, PV. 14.4% ABV. Aged 20 months in 35-40% new French oak. The oak is quite well integrated but seems to show a little more than the Merlot and CVC cru’s tasted this evening. Quite earthy, and mineral infused. A little more age on this than the others tonight also allows a little more open knit flavor profile. It shows vanilla, cassis, black plum, blackberry, black cherry, cedar, tobacco and some floral notes. Nice long complex and savory finish. Elegant and balanced. Still needs more cellaring for me but enjoyable with a long decant. Probably better 2028 and beyond in a cool cellar.

Tasted at a local shop with the husband and wife founders/vignerons from the winery. This is a blend of all eatate Sauvignon Blanc (72%) and Semillon (28%). Barrel fermented with only 10% new French oak aging. No Malo. About 700 cases made. Labeled 13% ABV but vintages have ranged 12.8-13.1%. Well structured and crisp with acidity. Floral, herbal and citrus nose that is also rich and almost creamy. Nice rich texture, but not too rich. Beautifully balanced. Honeysuckle and herbs counter citrus (a lime, grapefruit and tangerine melange), pear and melon. Finish is refreshingly tart and quite long. A very fine elegant wine. The last drops were best, so this can use a little air. 92–>93

Drank my other bottles too early! This was really good with steak. Rich dark fruit, but not overdone; tertiary notes of dried violets and leather. Still lots of life left.

This was a bit tight when we tried it at the winery, but we bought some in a fit of optimism. Optimism repaid: This has opened a lot. It retains some acidity but is generally a soft, approachable wine, appetizingly pear- and melon-scented, with a touch of salinity and some herbal flavor. Drink now.

This is still young but very drinkable, with dry blackberry-blueberry fruit lurking behind a layer of leathery tannin. Old-world style with new-world fruit.

Clear, bright pale gold color. Aroma profile shows mixed tropical fruit, white pear, ripe yellow apple, creamy vanilla, and a touch of chalky minerals. Similar, expressive flavor profile. Nicely balanced, not overly oaked, with a streak of acidity lingering below the surface. Medium finish.

Blinded this on some family members. Almost everyone (5 of 6) thought this to be Bordeaux. Well done, as this was fully integrated and in a good spot and really spoke of old world. Everyone recognized the quality of this.

Nice Cali Bordeaux blend. Rich and ripe, with plenty of oak influence, but nothing over-the-top. Will not be mistaken for Bordeaux, for sure. Crowd pleasing style, but also enough interest for the wine geeks. Oak integrated as it got more air throughout the evening. I really enjoyed this and went well with leftover prime top sirloin steak.

14.3%, natural cork, half poured into Boston rounds. After 2.5 hours decant, this shows very ripe red and blue fruits and lowish acidity. There is some attractive minerality and the wine is quite dry, but I'm not finding any pyrazines or much else here that interests me. At best, I can say there's a suggestion of wildness (not brett) that reminds me a bit of Cain.
Pulled a BR of this a couple of days later and it showed more complexity; I liked it more.
Did the same the following night and it really soared with a deep, dark aromatic that was super attractive, almost mysterious, but very classic. I just sat there sniffing it for 10 minutes before daring to taste. It still strikes me as a bit low in acidity, but the flavors are super interesting and unique. I'm on board now, but if representative the releases appear to requires 10 years plus for my preferences.

Color: pale yellow-green
Nose: sour, yeasty, bright
Palate, Fruity, citrus, golden delicious apple, light oak gives a slightly bitter finish. A bit of butter.
Full body.
This wine drank better than expected--I'm not usually a big fan of California chardonnays.
