A worldly palate with a feminine touch, this wants to excite me, and I was totally into it as I pulled the cork. As I tasted it, I realized that it wasn't going to bring me where I wanted to go. The structure is there, as is the solid winemaking. This would have been a spectacular wine had it been allowed to show its true potential. Unfortunately it was cut short by a bitterness and a desire to go back to the old days before femininity was allow to display its greatness. I will continue to enjoy the wine, even though I know that this is the last hurrah of this bottle. It did well for the effort, unfortunately expectations were set entirely too high. |

An ode to Ben Feder, co-founder of the vineyard and winery together with his wife who carries on the tradtion. We met Ben in 1980 during one of our trips to the Hudson Valley to visit with family in Elizaville and Rhinebeck. Ben was having success with seyval blanc and we purchased a case of the 1978. ben presented this cassis at the rhinebeck green market in 2005. i selected it for tonite to enjoy on its own and to make a simple kir since i knew that there would be an abundance of champagne at the table. served at the end of the meal. initially on its own. this was a new experience for all of us except champagneinhand. tasted like a york peppermint patty. i mean that in a good way. i was sorry to see that most people put it aside. then we ponied up remaining 1996 dom and poured a splash over for willing takers. most enjoyable and refreshing. a great marriage between the finesse of the dom and the sprightliness of the cassis, neither of which was diminished by the other. |

7/2/1983 - bacchus wrote: 90 pointsalthough his first vintage was his greatest, and later vintages were somewhat variable, i would have to say that overall, clinton vineyards was and probably continues to be the best producer of seyval blanc in new york state. we always enjoyed tasting at the winery and conversing with the proprietor when visiting family in the hudson valley. this vintage may not have been his most successful, but it offered pleasurable drinking nevertheless. looking at the bottle and writing this note now (11/2010) brings back fond memories of days gone by. |

I bought this bottle in 2004 at the vineyard. The initial taste reminded me a bit of port, but the finish is a full-bodied, well balanced taste of sweet raspberries. I would put this with Hungarian Tokaji, vintage Port and Chateau d'Yquem as my favorite dessert wines. |

8/15/2009 - J @ y H @ c k wrote: 90 pointsThis was a huge surprise. I bought this in February 2005 when Mrs. Feder was pouring it at Zachy's but never bothered to open it. Then a few years ago, our basement was flooded and this was under water for a day, but the water was cold. The label was ruined so I put it at the bottom of the rack. Today I opened it with a backup ready, expecting a dead wine. Far from it. The color was very light. The nose had a bit of sherry and I thought the wine had turned, but it dissipated immediately and became a mix of flowers and tart apples. The palate had multiple components - at first it was tart apple, acidity and some grapiness. Then it added honey, apricot and a meaty depth to it. The finish was moderate. The alcohol level is very low - 11.5%. I waffled on points. On an absolute scale I'll say 88 or 89. but I've got to push it to a shocking 90 because I did not expect this and it was a great pairing with lobster and roasted corn. I do not remember for sure what this was like when I tasted it and bough it, but I recall it being steely and a bit harsh. I bought it to support a local winery which was the site of my first winery visit back in 1979. |
