Wines with Larry, Huw and Paul in Martinborough: Popped and poured. Deep gold colour. An attractive bouquet of blanched almonds, cooking spices, lemon and some white florals. On the palate, this was clearly a mature white Burgundy from the mid-1990s. It seemed more evolved than the Carillon with which it was tasted. Round with Meursault-like richness on the palate. The wine was not premoxed but clearly was showing more oxidation than the Carillon, with the profile moving in a nutty, almost lactic direction. Rauno said that he kicked himself for not decanting the Leflaive because, toward the end of our pours, the wine really began to blossom in the glass. My initial impression was that I preferred the Carillon but that impression changed towards the end of my samples. The flavour profile became more multi-dimensional opening up into peaches and cream, honey roasted peanuts, with an almost crème brulee dimension (but of course not with that degree of sweetness). Mineral flavours also began to emerge. This wine is ready to drink now but should be given some air before tasting.

No premox here, just a lot of butter & popcorn in the nose, in the mouth a vibrant wine with lots of (oh, yes!) minerality, quite a full body and a very fresh acidity considering the red-wine vintage. Still young.

2001 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Park Palace, Grand Park Hotel): What a lovely way to start the evening. This was a lighter, more elegant expression of Pucelles than what I would normally associate with Leflaive, but boy was it drinking nicely. It had an almost pretty nose, with lovely aromas of ripe yellow fruit and lemon peel, together with a little perfumy, floral note and, with time, a touch of earthy mineral and a little steely tang. This was less stony, gunflinty than usual, rather less showy. The palate had a lovely finesse to it, with lemony juiciness running through flavours of green apples shading into redder varieties on the midpalate. While there was good depth, it was not as powerful as certain vintages. However, the wine was finely detailed and had a lovely litheness to it. Nice finish too with a round, supple mouthfeel and subtle length to its flavours of white fruit seasoned with a little spice. This was unusually elegant and very delicious. Good stuff, drinking beautifully on the night.

Dinner at Trelio (Clovis Ca.): Wow this is rich! Lot of smoke and caramel reduction, ripe yellow fruits, but with killer citrus lemon acidity to keep it fresh. Sautéed green apples in butter….exotic honey, chalk dust, match strike, creme brûlée, white flowers….sneaky alive….plenty and minerality and freshness to go with all the richness…nothing really blew off here….but I really liked it!

Virtually perfect tonight; bright, lively with citrus, minerality and a core of buttery sweetness. All about balance and harmony. On top, no signs of decline. AD 50, Frederiks Have.

1998 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Cheng Hu Tien, Keong Saik Road, Singapore): Enjoyable. Not a classic Leflaive Pucelles, but fun to drink. Saying that though, half the table managed to guess it correctly when blind. It had a lovely, quite arresting nose, almost pungent – with deep wafts of sweet cream over ripe red apples shading into stone fruit aromas, all this wed to a typical flinty, seashelly minerality and little drifts of smoke. Nice. The palate was very good, if not quite up to the level of the strongest of Pucelles vintages. It was creamy, almost oily textured, with rich yellow fruited flavours underpinned by steely mineral and a nice ream of spiciness. There was tons of depth, even power here. And while it was not the most precise, the balance was still pretty decent, enough to made it a great pairing with a chilled crayfish dish. There was just a little bittersweet linger right at the end that was a little distracting, but this was a nice wine overall. On current evidence, maybe time to start drinking up – I do not see this getting much better.

From this latest batch of high quality bottles, this wine again had an attractive medium yellow center and clear rims.

While not quite as expressive as my last bottle initially, this wine blossomed nicely with 3+ hours of air. The nose is so expressive and the flavors so ripe and dramatic, that the only reason I can see a wine drinker not falling in love with this is either they 1) had a bad bottle or 2) they didn't give it enough air.

This wine is better than many grand crus.

Light to medium yellow; straw-coloured. Unlike some other bottles we have had, this does not appear to be oxidised. It is full of ripe, peachy, honeysuckle fruit, is well-rounded, deeply flavoured, slightly peppery and long on the finish. This particular bottle is excellent, and it is just a pity there appears to be so much bottle variation.

Very light in colour. Strong legs. Quite a delicate but lovely nose, it bit hard to pick any particular elements out, honeysuckle, lemon zest and a bit of oak. The palate isn't that open, it's fresh, quite piercing at this early stage with a very long finish which is pretty great showing some nutty character

Nose a bit shy at first, once opens up: well integrated oak, notes of citrus, mineral note. High acidity, mineral streak reminding me of a Grand Cru Chablis, such as Les Clos. Understated, nervous, racy style. Well-balanced. Needs 10 plus years.

From a pristine bottle with essentially no ullage, this bottle had a medium yellow center and clear rims. The medium+ intensity nose featured lemon, custard, apple, white stone, and a hint of honey.

As expected this wine needed several hours to blossom. It was rich and ripe in the mouth with great acidity and length.

This wine was at, or very close to, Grand Cru quality. While it is drinking now, it will certainly last for 5+ years in this outstanding condition.

Not on the level of the 2007. Still a correct bottle with no sign of oxidation. It's good but it should be better given the producer and vineyard.

Rich and honeyed with some exotic fruit notes. Layered in the mouth, gently oaky. Has some spearmint cream flavour that I generally associate with Ramonet. A good wine but on the cusp of being a little too developed.

Burgundy dinner @ Serenade in Chatham: Second white of the evening. Medium gold color. Nose showed a flinty minerality and an oily petrol (Riesling-like). Mid Palate was rich with baked apples, pears, quince, lemons, white flowers. Strong minerality on the finish

Excellent wine - aged well. Classic Leflaive balance and elegance

This is gorgeous aged white Burgundy with no hint of premox. Beautifully balanced with a hint of sulphur at first that blew off. Then a coiled and complex wine with classic flavors of sweet hazelnuts and minerals. Perhaps a bit lighter than other vintages of this great premier cru but the elegance and complexity are hard to match. Fabulous and ready although should last off of it's exquisite balance.
