The right kind of funk on the nose complemented by a sweet, long finish. After 30 mins nose is totally dominated by exotic spice. We discussed best guesses as if we had been served blind, this would stump a lot of folks '92 remains a sleeper.

Richebourg and Romanee St Vivant Dinner (Summer Pavilion, Ritz Carlton, Singapore): Stunningly youthful for a 1989, this was very good indeed, but somehow still seemed some years away from peak. It had a typically rich, Leroy nose, with almost liquered aromas of melted cherries and dark berries wed to funky notes of earth and boiled herb, all wreathed with a rich, fragrant spiciness, with peppery accents, and woody notes of nutmeg and cloves - absolutely entrancing. After all those rich aromas on the nose, the palate was almost surprising with its finesse and purity, with wonderful fineness to its tannins and a livewire of juicy, citrussy acidity running through lovely pure flavours of red cherries and berries on the attack, and then more matured notes of orange peel and sour plums, and a little stream of rose petals floating alongside on the midpalate and into a long, mellow finish with a gentle earthiness and a little drift of spice closing the wine out nicely. Very good indeed, but it still seems to be holding quite a bit back in reserve behind its wonderfully pure, but still rather primary fruit. This all added to the wine lacking a bit of something. I would give it 8-10 years more easily, hopefully it will take the short step up from being a good to great wine by then.

Epic Burgundy Dinner (Boulevard - San Francisco CA): Tasted double blind. Flamboyant and extroverted, this is an incredibly fun wine showing red and black berries, lots of baking spice and some liqueur hints. Very fresh and youthful with great concentration. I'd like to see more nuance, but this just needs more time to evolve, much like I felt about another bottle last year.

Drunk at Man Wah at the Mandarin Oriental. I have had limited experience with Leroy but despite the cost and rarity this bottle has motivated me to rectify that problem. This is a very dense wine which exhibited quite significant powerful fruit. It is most definitely still a young wine but extremely balanced and complex that can be enjoyed now and for quite some time to come.

As good as the Richebourg was, this was even better. Much more open and floral on the nose with unreal spice. Bright and powerful on the palate. Spicey red fruit and great grip on the finish. This was delicious immediately after opening and only improved.

Paris Club dinner with JK (Chicago): Absolutely massive compared to the prior to Burgs. This might as well have been a Kosta Browne. That said, huge forward and perfumed nose of ripe red fruit, loads of spice, background of dark fruit and mushroom notes. Ripe, dense and concentrated on the palate. The tannin was much more noticeable in comparison to the previous two wines. Very sexy and this will last a long time. Hope to try it again in 10 years.

Wow. This was drinking perfectly last night. Stood up to, or surpassed a '96 Leroy Richebourg served alongside. Full flavor of both black and red fruits, with plenty of earth and oak, a peppery underside and a great finish. Fantastic for the finish and (if the word can be used at this price point) an actual value in the pantheon of the very best burgundies. A surprise for this vintage. Drink right now, or over the next few years and you'll be greatly rewarded.

Baller dinner honoring Chicago winos -- 99 La Tache, 99 Leroy RSV, 07 SE & etc (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): This has to be the most complete and hedonistic wine of the flight at the moment. Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe red and black fruits, powder sugar, candied lavender petals, dark spices, a hint of soy, tree bark, stem and earth. Excellent concentration, youthful yet perfectly harmonious palate, intense dark berry driven palate impression, tannins masked by intense sweet fruits and seamless finish that lasts. Noticeable Leroy signatures, ie intense sweet fruits, floral, baking spices and etc. Really hedonistic wine.

Deep red in color, and with an even deeper nose. Amazing nose with a wide array of floral notes and spices. Would have been an amazing wine even by Leroy standards IF I havent tried the 02 version of this wine which is slightly purer and with just a little more concentration and elegance. With slight undergrowth tones which is not detectable in the 02 version. Very very long finish and silk like texture.

My 2nd bottle from Japan bottle No. 00003 and shows more dense in nose and body than the last bottle buying from France.

Even I prefer the elegant and sweetness like Romanee-Conti from 1st bottle tasting but this time is more detail and more powerful with 3 layers aftertaste.

Mmm...it's great wine for sure and very good to drink now. It may close again next year.

I might have been a bit too enthusiastic with my last tasting note. That said this is a wonderful wine with superb spice and floral notes on the nose. There is so much going on in the mouth, but it does lack a bit of precision. Lots of detail, but without serious order and harmony. Fabulous grip and texture on the long finish.

A real eye opener for me. I love Leroy, but this took it to new heights. Incredibly complex and fascinating nose of spice, earth, flowers, more spice, red and blue fruit and more spice. The palate was sweet and broad, extremely detailed and fresh and bright. Wonderful grip and the finish lasted for 2 minutes. Layered and complex with perfect balance. Just love the sweet spice. Today at least, this blows away the 2001 DRC RSV we had the night before.

This is showing even better than the bottle last year. What a crazy nose, with loads and loads of roses and spices, you are basically standing in the middle of a floral garden. Driving palate best described as an iron fist inside a velvet glove. Powerful yet without weight, simply unbelievable. Looking forward to trying this again in a few years.

Absolutely superb spice on the nose and vibrant red and black fruit notes. Interesting floral component. Wonderfully bright fruit on the palate and a very sexy texture. Love the energy and verve. More approachable than the 1990 we had a couple nights ago. Very long finish with fabulous grip. Best 98 red Burg I have had.

Eight (Not Angry) Men Drinking Great Wine (Paris Club - Chicago IL): Wow, what an alluring wine. Perfumed with enticing spice aromas, intense black fruit and a hint of cherry liqueur. Intense and incredibly powerful, this is slightly hedonistic and one dimensional now, but there is so much youthful energy and concentration that I'm confident nuance will emerge as this wine hits its peak stride, probably after 2025. I had the '93 recently, which might be a more exciting bottle of Burgundy today, but I think this 1990 will be better long-term.

Slightly more mature flavors of both red and black cherry. Acidity and elegant tannins are very well integrated. Silky, long finish with great textures. At a great place now.

With the Burgundy wine group at Imperial Treasure over the best Chinese meal this year. An ex domaine release. A lovely bright red, this looked like it was just bottled! On the nose, it was mind blowing. The typical Leroy nose - intense, floral, deep, rich and absolutely captivating. The palate was no slouch. This was initially served too cold, but as it warmed in the glass, I had no doubts this would be sensational. It was elegant in a Musigny way, but had the structure, the depth, the complexity and the length. The tannins were strong but there was immense fruit, very fresh. The balance was the key. When the table consumed the wine, there was silence. That spoke volumes. This is the best wine I have had this year. I have a single bottle left, and this will be opened in 2029.
