1980 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche

La Tâche Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

6/29/2015 - tinybubbles Likes this wine: 95 points

A nose of sweet spice, musty dark plum, a background gaminess, violet, cherry, and cola with time. The nose evolved over the course of two hours of air time to the point where is was almost better than initially with more pronounced baking spice and cola notes. Dirtier and earthier on the nose than my February experience. Red cherry, dry game meat, beef jerky, background black pepper and clove on the palate. An outstanding and yet less vibrant and somewhat dirtier bottle than I had five months ago. Bottle opened 30 minutes before poured. Consumed with chanterelle mushroom tortellini.

Dark red in color, took almost 3 hours to strut its stuff. Deep red flower nose with lots of spices with slight undergrowth, very ripe and not as secondary as I thought it would be. The finish is big and very long, wonderful and still got a long life ahead.

Annual DRC tasting dinner in Stockholm, to check out the 2012’s.
Since one of the two La Tâche 2012 bottles opened tonight was corked (first time I have experienced a corked La Tâche) a bottle of 2010 was opened as “compensation”.
I have had this wine before, and it is without any doubt one of my top three wines, ever!
Last time I had it was 1,5 years ago, and this was surprisingly developed since then.
The color showed a much more advanced color than I would have ever expected, almost as if it was 10 – 15 years older than it is.
I perhaps guessed that this should be much less expressive and open than it showed.
The nose is to die for, with such depth and still such airy and clean, with sexy feminine bright red berries, perfume, transcendental & lovely red flowers, roses, rose petals, dusty dry quarry minerals, touch of pencil lead, deeper dark cherries.
Layer after layer of incredible perfume and scents.
Best nose in a young wine I have ever experienced.
Palate just roars of an exceptional Grand Vin.
The transparency and lightness in combination with the power and depth are beyond words.
The silky fruit, the spicy stems, the fine oak, the femininity together with the power and flesh of the fruit, in combination with the airy and transparent roses and flowers, the acidity and minerallity is of a kind and combination that can’t be describe in words, but has to be experienced.
This is perfection in a bottle, almost alien, completely of the charts intoxicating.
Advanced, but still young, in a weird combination, showing youth but also development.
A wine that I would drink any day, from today until the end of time.
(100 – 100+)

Annual DRC tasting dinner in Stockholm, to check out the 2012’s.
First time I have experienced a corked La Tâche was tonight, in one of the two bottles opened.
The other one was however just magic.
This is a Grand Vin!
Nose shows loads of spices, Vosne spices and Christmas spices, dusty flint stones and minerals, quarry, spicy oak, pencil shavings and pencil lead, lovely green stems, flowers and perfume.
An incredible deep and profound nose.
I could just have spent all night sniffing this fine La Tâche.
But I did not:
The palate showed fat and oily ripe fruit, super concentrated (without being the least extracted) and clean, deep and spicy.
The chalky fat minerals are just to die for, and the tannins, overall structure, and superbly clean acidity woven together makes a super & big 2012 La Tâche, with huge, huge potential and great length on the finish.
Young (of course) but lovely at this point!
Brilliant, with a brilliant & long future ahead!

Double decanted and followed by a 2 hour aeration. The nose had soil, dried prunes, flowers and caramel. The palate was intense but I would expect more finesse from a La Tache. Perhaps the double decanting was not necessary. I felt like the wine did not reflect its full potential tonight.

Burgundy color with very little in the way of bouquet or flavor. I would be hard put to place this wine if tasted blind. It lacked fruit, with an overarching blandness, lacking depth and nuance. It was balanced in the negative, but not the positive, by absence of any harshness or off notes. I was hoping that the great La Tache would prove me wrong about my general skepticism about Burgundy wines, but it didn't. These wines are over-hyped, very expensive, and most of the time disappointing. If you want to experience the power of Pinot Noir, look elsewhere.

2001 Vosne-Romanée Grand Cru Dinner (Imperial Treasure Teochew, Takashimaya): A rather rich, opulent expression of La Tâche, this was surprising given the context of the vintage and the genererally finer and more minerally than usual tones on the wines that came before, but boy was it ever good. It had a dazzling nose, wafting out of the glass in arresting tones of sweet blueberries and dried plums, fragrant spice and smoky mineral, rich earthy notes that brought to mind a forest after a spring shower, and then perfumed drifts of fresh cut flowers. Wow. One always expects a fantastic nose on a La Tâche, but even then, this was breathtaking. Like the nose, the first impression on the palate was one of weight and stuffing, with wonderfully deep draws of dark cherries and berries infused with warm spice and gentle earthy notes filling the mouth beautifully. Yet in true La Tâche fashion, this carried its weight effortlessly, with juicy acidity and beautifully silky tannins lending it a wonderful sense of purity and finesse. This was a crazy delicious wine, yet one that oozed class beneath its hedonistic surface. It probably suffered a little from being placed next to a truly superb bottle of 2001 Romanée-Conti, perhaps the only wine in a sterling line-up that could have knocked this down a peg. Even with all its airy elegance and precision, the La Tâche seemed almost like a weightlifter next to the RC’s supremely graceful gymnast of a palate. On its own though, absolutely superb and starting to drink very nicely indeed.

My first La Tache 1992 was in 2007 and this is my 2nd time.

Bottle No. 17440

A little low in level, more dark in color, mature but fuller-bodied when compares with a bottle last 8 years, beautiful nose of La Tache, austere, so classic and delicious.
If one thinks 1992 LT is weak that's totally wrong. It can hold for 4 hours of drinking and at the end, it becomes a good bottle of great Burgundy without its typical scent but getting close to the clean and elegant feeling of drinking Jayer's Cros Parantoux 1992.

This wine can go easily for another 20 years from now. I wish I could get some bottles for myself to drink it again and again.

Weak vintage, great producer, 1992 La Tache is my type of wine.

Absolutely fantastic, splendid, magically spicy nose. Full, deep, multidimensional and complex. 100% oriental bazaar with exotic spices and perfume on sale. Wonderful cherry fruit provides backbone. More in the dark fruit spectra. Also forest floor influences and a lot of pine cone aromas. Fully ready! Essence of magic Pinot.
Full, Vosne-spicy, dense and harmonius palate. So much exotic Spices combines with so much sweet magic Pinot fruit with both dark and red berries. Lush, seamless and luxury. An absolute purity of perfumed fruit. Very, very long. Marvellous finish. The intense floweriness, the spicy fullishness, the perfumed silkiness, how can it all be present in a glass of wine. Without any shadow of a doubt WOTN, and it also had some good competitors. In a perfect drinking window.
The funny thing with tasting Icon wines blind or half-blind is that they in many ways are so obvious. They taste exactly like the books tells us it should taste. You don't have to search for the aromas, you don't have to make an effort, these wines simply ARE. That's my experience with the few times I've tasted Chateau Margaux, Chateau Petrus, Latour, etc, and now with La Tache.
With current prices the chances are slim that I will ever be able to try La Tache from superior vintages (just like 2000 DRC Richebourg) and my experience of this wine is one of the 5-10 best I've tasted, I shell out 99 points. In the unlikely event of an encounter with say 1999, 1990, 2005 I'm prepared to lower my score, but not for now.

Served at room temperature having stood for a day after removing from long term storage since release (good to stand and decant given the sediment, so glad I read the other CT note on that). This has a great, ripe nose right on opening, with pleny of fruit showing on the palate. It shut down after about 30 minutes, and then took a couple of hours in the decanter to open back up. Overall a very nice wine with ripe red fruit, rose petals, and supporting (but well integrated) tannin is still in the background, arguing for this to be around for quite some time. Feels like it is in its window, which will be long. Overall very nice, but as with most of my experiences with La Tache, the subtleties are often lost on me and although it never really "sings to me" in a way to justify the premium, I always feel lucky to be able to enjoy it once in a great while. A-

2011 DRC Tasting (Paris, France): About the same color as the Richebourg and the nose was more closed. Subtle hints of red, blue and black fruit along with roses and spice on the nose. This improved slightly with air, but remained fairly reserved. It was all back there though. Incredible detail on the palate which was just beautiful and had a distinct blue fruit note along with some plum oak and Asian spice. The finesse and power of this wine made it stand out in the tasting and for me the flavor profile was the most enjoyable. If only it were slightly more open tonight. Wonderfully long finish with a subtle grip that left the complexity of this wine lingering until the next day. La Tache is something.

Ok but not great fill had me wondering how this bottle would fare. It ended up being every bit the equal of the bottle from domaine last month. Dark cola on the nose with floral notes, light perfume and old dry leather. Multi-faceted and umami-rich palate with light soil, blackberry, black olive and a melange on tingly spices. Very long and complex finish. I had my final taste three hours after the first and almost four hours after the bottle was opened...still going strong and continuing to evolve. Rock star wine...99+.

Quite mature but oh so refined. A gorgeous nose of Autumn and faded cherries with sweet, decadent earth. On the palate, the fruit has very much faded but what's left is a gorgeous, silky, ethereal wine with incredible flavors of decayed leaves, sweet earth and a panalopy of spices. The finish is so elegant and complex and so fine that I had to slow down to really absorb what I was taking in. There are finely grained minerals and spices that just dance across the tongue and the layers of silk and lace will live long in my memory. At Latour, Crystal Springs, NJ.

Great texture to the nose with wonderful underlying spice notes. Light funk aromas that are working to resolve themselves, but nonetheless quite pleasing. Firm tannins on the backpalate but still silky in feel. Some faint tartness on the backpalate as well; a different acid profile than the Romanee-Conti. A fantastic wine that will take quite some time to evolve and reach its peak. Opened 40 minutes prior to tasting, with an additional 15 minutes in the glass.
