A magnum donated from the Müller cellars. This is the first vintage from which Müller released some magnums and man was this good. It has notes of custard apple, citrus blossom, smoky mineral, slate and lime brulee. It is so deep and unctuous, with almost painful intensity. It drives through the palate and powers on and on.

medium yellow color, subtle green apple, guava, honey on nose. Tropical fruits, honey on the palette, heavy bodied. Opened up with lots of air. Good balance of acidity and sweetness, but lacks some complexity. 93pts

Opened at Caprice in HK for the Jean Trimbach x Egon Muller Celebration Dinner by the winemakers themselves. Slow-oxed since 3pm and poured at around 11:15pm.

Served alongside the '99 Auslese and paired with Blue Cheese and Banana. This was the better of the pair - gorgeous multi-layered sweetness with acidity and freshness and just 'more' in every dimension than the '99, hence pushing it up by one point.

This would have been contender for WOTN if the TBA '18 hadn't showed up a few minutes later... but no complaints from anyone. Absolutely prime Auslese and would definitely revisit. Still has potential to age - perhaps not upside per se, but will keep at this level for years.

Served alongside the '97 Auslese and paired with Blue Cheese and Banana - a really really good combination. This was a fantastic Auslese, appropriate sweetness with a lot of stone fruit, honey, treacle and floral notes coming through, but fresh, vibrant, well balanced and still young. Unfortunately overshadowed by the '97 which had a bit more oomph in every department, but still a wonderful wine.

Just goes to show how these wines can perform if given enough age. Would definitely seek out again if given the chance, and will stay at this level for a while.

I heard that Egon Muller makes fantastic, overpriced wines and this is a perfect example. Did I enjoy it? Yes, it's an expertly balanced wine, with no surprises but excellent precision nonetheless, easy to like. Is it overpriced? Absolutely, you can buy the same quality for half, maybe even quarter of the price.

Super Bowl 2022 (Alpharetta, GA): Deeper golden, diesel, ripe apricot and peach, honeycomb, spicy, lemongrass, some botrytis, mineral, still fresh and fluffy but not too heavy, rounded, mineral, floral; very good; mine, still drinking well almost a week late not corked or refrigerated, this should last a few decades longer.

Had a glass at Eslite Wine Cellar Egon Muller gala dinner.
Deep gold. I would definitely mistake this wine as a TBA if tasted blindly. Perfumed nose with sweetened pineapple, peach, honey, botrytis, and bergamot. Ethereal and transparent. This wine would make you doubt how is it possible to contain so much complexity in such a weightless body.

Nose of botrytis on mango and honey.

Magnificent mouthfeel with juice of enormous density, it's honeyed and coats the mouth. Then, the no less intense acidity takes over to tender the wine with aromas of exquisite freshness, mango, tropical fruits and peach. It's almost syrupy because the honey dominates, but a honey to which adds a spring of crazy energy. It's layered on an intense finish, a blend of mango dipped in honey with tremendous length.

Great Egon Muller, as usual I would say.

There was some leakage but no sign of oxidation.
Poured directly from the bottle, it was closed but was drinking well after 2 hours.
The wine looks caramel colored. The legs are medium.
It smells like quince, pineapple, lemon and honey. At every sip, there is a slight prickliness from the acidity which quickly wanes.
It tastes like honey, quince and pineapple. It is very complex yet the body is surprisingly light. The wine has silky texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has high acidity.

Nose of petrol, botrytis, tropical fruits and honey.

Extremely dense mouth, where the acidity that hits the breaker gives extreme sapidity to an extremely dense juice on flavors of mango, passion fruit and wet stone. This stony sensation will carry the wine all the way, giving it depth and freshness while the exotic fruits give it richness. The maturity of this wine coupled with a laser cut acidity gives it a dantesque balance. Magnificent finish on honey and apricot which extends over a length full of minerality.

Excellent as often.

10th MW Symposium, Wiesbaden - Day 2: Alcohol 7.0%, 165.0 g/l residual sugar, 10.4 g/l acidity, 3.0 pH
Scharzhofberg is situated in Saar/Mosel. There is no temperature regulating River close by. Therefore we have big temperture changes between day and night. This preserves the acidity in the grapes, which we need for the off dry and sweet style of our wines.
We live and work in and with a microclimate that is characterised by the northwestern location of our area. The southern slopes are still really necessary here for the ripening of the grapes. So we always live and work on the edge of the possible.
But the basis for this “possible” are constant and can also be quickly explained:
Old vines, some of which are still on their original roots and date back to the 19th century.
Low yields, never exceeding 60 hectoliters per hectare, and most of the time even as low as 30 hectoliters per hectare.
Intensive ploughing, up to six times a year, which keeps the soil fresh and aerated.
And a very restrained use of chemicals. No chemical fertilizers, no herbicides, no insecticides and as few fungicides as possible.
Yield: 5 (15 in total in 2005) hl/ha
Soil Type weathered devonian slate
Harvest Notes Ocotber 4th-26th
Vinification: The Bortytis berries that have been sorted out are gently and slowly pressed, resulting in a clear must. Since we only have a small amount of these grapes, small steel tanks are used for fermentation. Fermentation lasts a few months, fermentation is stopped by adding sulfur at the right time.
Maturation: The enormous concentration of botrytis berries, the residual sugar and the concentrated acid allow the wines to mature over decades.
Oak influence: fermented in stainless steel

Great golden color with a lot of residues
Full on ripeness on the nose, overripe but jammy, stone fruit, tin peach, tin apricot, pineapple, you got still got the white spice notes of the 2015 Kabinett tasted before plus the rubbery notes.
Palate is again electrifying, high acidity with the residual sugar in a beautiful dance in utter balance, overripe peach and apricot again, pineapple with lime tartness, crunchy texture and immense length. Legendary

A terrific Auslese. Opens up with a bit more VA than I had anticipated, which somewhat dissipates with air revealing a honeyed, hugely complex, structured and intense wine with very high acidity.
These really dense and powerful Auslese may never be my own favourites, at least not when young, but can be very very good with age. Drink 2040+
