Quite puzzled by the other reviews. This bottle was received exceptionally well by a dozen knowledgeable tasters who had already enjoyed some exceptional good and expensive wines. This was no let down. Good fruit, tannin and acid balance. paired exceptionally well with paella

As good as the 2008 vintage. Close to a perfect wine.

Drank after the crianza, this one shows complexity and class. Good work with the oak, that backs the red fruits to make a nicely balanced wine. Great to enjoy now, but 3-5 years ahead easy.

This is a powerful, highly tannic wine that needs many more years of aging. An intense mix of vanilla, damp earth, berry fruits, clove, smoked meats, chocolate, and mouth-puckering leather.

Already very pleasant after a few minutes in the glass ... will probably not develop much more but has enough potential to keep the fun going for some years !

Initially a hint of prune, then nice plum and red fruit and spice flavors. Medium bodied. Definitely losing a little.

- Brick color with medium forming legs and aromas of cherry and oak. It's balanced with a medium/full body. Smooth texture with a long finish.

I first tasted a younger version of this in Barcelona and wound up chasing this one ll over Spain. I finally decided to drive to the Bodega in Toro to taste and purchase. While I was only mildly successful visiting he Bodega, I was very enthusiastic to enjoy the other wines of Toro. I actually found this 2000 at one of my favorite shops in Portland E&R. The wine is perfectly ages, a nice brown bricking around the edges, firm tannins and a lovely round balance of fruit. Oak is present, but mild. Alcohol is not a factor. Beautiful.

A lot of clove, coconut oak, plums and dried raisins on the nose - almost like raisinated ice cream. In the mouth this is supple, with a crisp dark berry and a lot of sage and balsamico - very intense barrique, although it was refined oak, and a lot of tannin on the back. If this comes together it will taste like a moccha covered sweet plum..... in 7-10 years. Until then, get yourself a huge piece of meat to accompany it.

Much better than previous bottles.. On the PnP, you get the plums over dark cherry taste. Extremely smooth and mellow. Touch of vanilla, espresso and tobacco. Mid length finish touch of leather and juicy expressive fruit.

This tastes very nice. Finally worth it's cost.

On opening, there was a quick spash of cedar and tobacco that was predominate. Vanilla and oak then took over on the nose. PnP shows nice dark fruit and tons of mocha notes on a leathery core. Finish is medium long and bordering on delicious. Just waiting for this wine to catch some air. Tannins are present but smooth and polished. Elegant is the first word that comes to mind, but the mid-palate needs to improve on catching some air. This wine seems about a year past its prime.

After an hour, nice fruit on the initial attack, but as it fades a leathery prune like aftertaste kicks in. Quite dry and astringent, its still very smooth, but the finish is a bit off.

Two hours in and the fruit is buried behind a leathery veil that refuses to lift. Sourness is creeping in and its not a good sourness like in sour cherries, its got an ugly edge to it. Have to revise my score down. Have some more bottles of this, but it may be too old.

Ouch i missed this one. Too old, at least this bottle was. Raisins, wet tobacco and something that might be called fruit. All in all fun to open at this time and suggest if ya got it, go for it. Of note and i mean no disrespect to this next statement; this would be epic to cook with!

Thisi s the most interesting and powerful Tempranillo we ever had. At this point in its life (which is has much more), this wine needs about an hour to open up. The nose was incredible from the start to finish with dark fruit, cinnamon spice, cedar and mexican chocolate just leaping out of the glass. On the first pour, the wine was a bit alcoholic with very dark, concentrated and brambly fruit that became more elegant over the evening, while maintaining its rich and focused cassis flavor. Pencil lead, bakers chocolate and cedar forest highlight the mid-palate, which all seem to meld with the fruit on a luscious lingering finish. We have no idea how this bottle ended up in our cellar, but we need to find more.

Oak, oak, oak... and some more oak. There is elegant fruit and fresh acidity in the back - if you search for it. Finishes on bitter oak tannins. - 86 points

very dark, completely not clear with very long legs. nose: chocolate with alcohol, dark cherries; Sachertorte flavours - quite robust. taste: opaque tannins on the whole palette - very woody; very low accidity; finish of blackberries and chokeberries. Too tannic which makes it not completely balanced. Anyway - has guts. To rare venison steaks was a very good companion.

Drank a bottle at a tapas bar in Barcelona. Spent the next three weeks trying to find more - finally visiting the Bodega in Toro. Toro wines are much different than the more popular Riberas and Riojas. I love the wine and the region. It is like Napa in 1955.
This "Special Selection" is their reserve and it is gorgeous. Very concentrated, big fruit and a dark berry chocolate hint. I have 3 more bottles that won't be opened until 2015-16. Worth seeking out. Much bigger than their regular bottling of tinto Toro.
