Nice aromas of red fruit, almonds, and earth. Might have been subtlety oxidized...but it didn't distract from the palate. Somewhat one-noted on the palate with mostly red fruit. Very nice.

An almost perfect wine (for me... I don't get to drink much burgundy). Deep black fruit, earth mushrooms and more earth on the nose, intense minerality and long finish. Elegant and integrated.

Drinking beautifully right now. Gentle red fruited flavours, earth, and more savoury leathery and mushroom elements all coming together very seamlessly on a graceful, lightweight frame. It's very polished with the tannin almost fully resolved and a beautiful texture on the palate that makes it all too easy to drink.

Medi brick. Cherry, spice. Very light body, surprising tannin (fairly light but still present), sour cherry acid. Good, not great. Very nice. Nose started to fade after two hours or so.

This is so interesting to compare to the ’06 I had almost exactly 2 years ago. There are so many similarities; obviously this being a much more mature version and showing a bit of old wine funk and aged leather/ barnyard notes. This shows tart red fruit with a pretty rose petal/ floral note as well as strong earthy/ brushy tones and distant remnants of Gevrey blackberry on the backside. There’s also some trademark Gevrey meatiness on the nose, but that is a less compelling feature. What strikes me here is the presence of a prominent citrusy/ orange zest/ rusted iron note that also comes across on the backside. This was noticeable in the more recent (2006) version, though much more in the background in that example. Finishes medium and shows some soy and spice notes. This is by no means tired, but perhaps slowing down a bit, with the fruit having lost some ground to the secondary notes and structural components. Thanks to Salil for the heads up on this one.

Very Good – Drink Now

I was shocked, thinking the bottle would be dead. No, it was alive, and enticing. Think about savory spices, a bit of dark fruit, and tongue coating flavors, and perfumed aromas.

Louis Jadot Cellar Visit, Barrel Tasting and Lunch in the Vineyard (Beaune): Barrel tasting at Jadot. Ripe black cherry on nose and palate. Very good braised meat spice throughout. Fruit richness works well with firm structure, with good balance start-to-finish. A big step up. Very good.

Expressive nose of cherry, and plum with hints of anise and forest floor. On the palate soft red fruit, good acidity with mineral and earthiness. Tannin and oak are well integrated and a very good finish. This is a 95 drinking very well now and basically a very nice wine.

Dinner with good friends at I Trulli (I Trulli, Flatiron, NYC): Opaque blood, barely bricked. How is this so young -- I've had it since release, 25+ years! Austere but spicy nose, cardamom seed, barely ripe cherry. Palate is >100% 1988; austere, very tannic. Will it ever come totally around? Tight; needs at least 10 years from this bottle, anyway. Good but very tannic length. Cripes! (I gave this a good 2 hours of air in the open bottle. I was just stunned by how backwards it still is. I can't imagine how hard a grand cru from this stable would be...)

Color appropriate for age with some bricking; nose is very good with dried red fruit, toffee; palate is light bodied, good acid and fruit but not as strong as the nose. 89-90

On the first night, this wine was funky on the nose, a little tart in the mouth with unintegrated oak on the finish. Texture was grainy and silky at the same time. On the second night, it had come together more and felt less sappy, more well-rounded. Needs a few years perhaps.

Opened an hour in advance. A first taste just after opening gives you almost nothing, except chicken crap. The color is quite light, even for pinot. About an hour in the wine suddenly opens up. Fruit comes up to compliment the tannins and a hint of cinnamon and orange peel round out the red fruit flavors. This began to shut down and become tannic again after 2 hours. Not sure if it would open up again. Previous notes suggest it won't.

A bit of fading. The captivating nose shows dark raspberry, cedar, flowers, decaying leaves and mineral. This is medium full bodied on the palate, with excellent concentration and lovely class. The long finish features slightly obtrusive tannins. Drinking very well.

Pale crimson color with lots of bricking clearly showing this to be a mature wine. Nose is all tertiary notes, lots of mushroom and earth in particular. Medium bodied with some faded tart red fruit--primarily sour cherries. Some spice, earth, forest floor. I get a real woodsy feel on the palate. Good complexity and surprisingly round mouth feel. Tannins fairly well resolved. Nice length. The wine is likely a bit past its prime, and it's not a particularly elegant wine, but there's sufficient fruit to balance the acidity and tertiary elements. Still plenty to enjoy here if one appreciates the older, more rustic red burg style. Much better than I expected at this point in the wine's life. Perhaps it's a bit closed right now?
