2019 Mercury Pinot Noir North Coastmore |
3/7/2024 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 93 pointsReally delicious, and nice to occasionally have something made in that sort of mid-2000s lush CA Pinot style with a boatload of unapologetic cola spices, vanilla bean, and so on, buttressing a ton of dark of warm black cherry compote and blackberry pie. It's big and rich for a Pinot, but as usual with their reds, I wouldn't call it overblown, cloying, imbalanced, etc. It's not complex or super-precise, but it's deliberate, delicious, and well-made. Acidity is just present enough to keep inviting the next sip. This vintage was ever-so-slightly more oaky than the previous, but not overly so. Generally, I prefer their Cab Reserve and some of their other reds even as a Pinot devotee. |

12/7/2023 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 93 pointsSame as my last note, wonderful value. Very simple but incredibly delicious and well balanced wine. Loads of chocolate covered cherry, nice dark fruit that isn't overdone at all. Silky melted tannins. |

11/28/2023 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 93 pointsVery similar to my last experience with their zin. It's pretty simple and straightforward, but really delicious and definitely avoids that cloying jammy thing that really turns me off to a lot of zin. Rich and round with ripe raspberry liqueur, red licorice, tiny tiny pops of baking spices here and there but mostly about the soft, flavorful fruit that still has a sense of freshness and elegance. Obviously not an acid driven wine but shows good balance. |

11/25/2023 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 94 pointsSame as my last note. Expressive and delicious, very well balanced (powerful but never heavy), with copious red and black currants, vanilla bean, red and black licorice... pretty much all fruit and oak but so purely delicious. Melted tannins, good acidity and fresh fruit for the style. Effortless pairing with a dry aged strip. |

9/21/2023 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 92 pointsReally delicious. Right now, it doesn't do as much to justify the somewhat elevated cost compared to the rest of their reds as an older vintage I tried (2013) or their amazing messenger Cabernet Sauvignon, but it was still lovely, with effusive red currant and vanilla on the nose, totally melted tannins and a long, lingering finish. It's not an acid driven style but like many of their wines, it's balanced and elegant. Feels very modern and polished but still mostly red-fruited. |

7/14/2023 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 93 pointsVery tasty! I don't drink a lot of zinfandel, I find many are too jammy for my palate - but this was pretty dialed-in. It's mostly fruit forward, yes, but in a nice way, rich red fruit playing beautifully with gentle, high quality oak. Cherry pie, black cherry cola, milk chocolate, soft and velvety but with the right amount of texture and acidity to keep it honest and balanced. It's pretty straightforward but it wears its richness well. |

5/22/2023 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 91 pointsVery tasty, lots of bubblegum and some raspberry on the nose with good acidity, a bit more crisp and vibrant than some of their other whites/rosés. Doesn't really have the same solid QPR of their less-expensive reds, but it was really enjoyable. I often find rosé to be overpriced, and this is kind of one of those, but in that category, definitely one of the better ones. |

5/10/2023 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 94 pointsA friend blinded this as really good, modern/polished Napa Merlot, and I can see why- has the richness and concentration of Napa, but with a somewhat redder fruit tone and "rounder edges" compared to some Cabernet. Loads of black cherry cola and black forest cake supported by buttery oak, caramel, and touches of faint earth, maybe black licorice and tobacco. Really expressive and ripe- not a wine about nuance, but it's really powerful while still feeling controlled and balanced. Tannins already melted and silky (maybe not one for seriously long aging...) Still my favorite in their lineup and even with the high price, likely the best QPR. |

4/26/2023 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 93 pointsPretty much the same as my last notes, and a couple of steps up from the 2020 we tried alongside this time. Maybe a bit shy and straightforward at this stage, but beautiful with dark cassis, gentle tobacco, a bit of milk chocolate, silky tannins, and a long finish. A down-the-middle Bordeaux blend with great balance, and one that'll become even more present with time. I've been lucky to try this vintage 4 times now- two have been a bit more engaging and expressive, and two have been a bit more understated (this was one of the latter.) |

4/26/2023 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 91 pointsQuite good but a couple of steps behind the 2019, which we had side-by-side. This was strange, with some nice fruit on the nose but really resembling a zinfandel, with that distinct jammy red fruit preserve thing and a sort of brighter palate with dried cherries, not really what I'd expect for a traditional Sonoma Bordeaux blend. It was really pretty and enjoyable, just lacking the depth, length, and complexity of the '19. |

2/14/2023 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 93 pointsI'm much less familiar with their Pinots than their other reds, but as a Pinot devotee in general, this was delicious. Pretty much the opposite of "burgundian", this is a dense cherry cola style Russian River/Sonoma Coast bottle all the way. Just so damn expressive and flamboyant, but never cloying or overdone. Not really an acid-driven style and I usually prefer more nuance and complexity, but the big style was really well-executed here and the QPR works just fine. Felt similar to some cuvées from big Sonoma stalwarts like Hartford Court, maybe just slightly simplified. |

1/31/2023 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 94 pointsReally excellent, extra strong in their super solid lineup of reds. Effortless and powerful on the nose with deep blackberry compote, some leather, and lots of vanilla oak. Even with all that richness, it still felt like Cab Franc, with a distinct darkish coffee bitterness and cigar-like accents in the background (I know these can show up in Cab Sauv too, but they don't really in Mercury's.) Much more about power than finesse, but still more than enough acidity for the style, and very, very fine tannins- maybe a little clipped on the finish, but still totally lovely. |

Not much to the palette in fruit, tannin or finish. Certainly not offensive in any way but left me wanting more. I recall other vintages being a bit more interesting. |

11/17/2022 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 93 pointsSo good. Really just tastes like a mini version of some of their other reds, with that same kind of faintly sweet graham cracker oak supporting ripe, elegant, silky black fruits, and with decent acidity for a soft/ripe style. Not a complex wine at all, but very, very well made. I wish I lived closer to Geyserville (I'm in Seattle!) - would be super fun to be able to refill the 1000ml jug there for parties as needed. |

10/13/2022 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 94 pointsTotally delicious, closer to my first note than my second this time around. I don't know if I would call this a complex wine but it's an extremely well crafted one with excellent balance, and it doesn't sacrifice depth of flavor to achieve a sense of elegance. Rich black fruit, maybe lots of black cherry especially this time and spiced plum with the smallest, smallest little earthy tobacco hint. Creamy melted tannins and decent enough acidity for the style. (it's a "crowd pleaser" but done very, very well.) Maybe I'm overrating it, I just really like supporting this tiny producer. |

8/14/2022 - caesar77 Likes this wine: 92 pointsOpaque purple with dark chocolate-purple edge in color. Cabernet dominates the nose expressing cassis, dark fruit & pyrazine. On the palate, it is fleshy with notes of cassis, cherry, black tea and a hint of sweet tobacco. Fine-grained tannins are well integrated now, perceptible on the sides of the tongue and gums. Long finish of bing cherry and wood spice. |

7/28/2022 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 93 pointsThis is just lovely. Like many of their reds, a solid example of a rich, rounded style but still feels quite elegant, and is content to be subtle where others would be loud and goofy. I feel like this was a small step behind the previous bottle, it just didn't really show as vividly or intensely this time. Still very enjoyable. |

7/17/2022 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 93 pointsTotally delicious, a welcome return to form for me after their tasty but austere/difficult bottling of the Bastard Malbec, which is more expensive. For me this was one of the top wines in their strong red lineup, especially for the lower 40-something price, as it wasn't far behind the $65+ wines at all. |

7/5/2022 - sid_loves_wine Likes this wine: 91 pointsEnjoyable for sure but I think one of the weaker reds in their (strong) lineup right now, at least at this stage. Showed only a shadow of the richness and plush elegance I've come to associate with their style- instead it felt a little terse and closed. There was some alluring dark spiced black fruit lurking beneath on the nose, but difficult to really get a bead on it (the alcohol heat was a little spiky too, something I rarely find in their reds.) Palate about the same- nice and plush texture with some subtle dark fruit and faint oak- the alcohol pokes out a bit toward the finish. Maybe just needs time to unwind. |

6/6/2022 - caesar77 Likes this wine: 92 pointsGarnet with ruby edge. Nose is mostly Cab Franc coming through with cherry liqueur, raspberries and that familiar pyrazine note. There's also somethink dark lurking--like brambleberry that I only pick up very briefly while huffing it after a swirl in the glass. On the palate, it tastes like a GSM blend with dark berries, sous bois and a touch of blue cheese. Tannins are silky smooth, perceived only somewhat on the gums and cheeks. Medium bodied, but intense with a long, long finish of sour cherry, sweet tobacco and vanillin. This is really enjoyable on its own, but also a very versatile pairing wine. Fun stuff! |
