15.8% abv. First planted in the 1800's, the vineyard above the Sonoma Valley was named by Louis M. Martini for its reddish rocky soil. Label mentions "coveted grapes" producing some of the "longest-lived wines" of the region. 550 cases made. Viscous, opaque, and darkly colored wine. Dark berries and leathery notes coat the palate. It tastes mature but not necessarily on the downslope. It doesn't hit me with as much alcoholic heat as you might expect from the alcohol percentage. Two days after the wine was opened, the wine seemed to have mellowed a bit and was pleasantly juicy and fruity, still with dark berries but less savory notes.

Black cherry, a little cola, tons of sweet tobacco leaf. Not flabby or jammy at all. Nice zin.

Blackberries, blueberries and brambly spice. Just a hint of vanilla and a long finish...think this can go for awhile.

The best Zin I've had in a while. Meaty and velvety the spice and flavor that you desire. I only wish I had more in my cellar.

15.5% alcohol. Allowed to breathe in glass 15 minutes before tasting. Clear dark garnet color. Bouquet of sweet brambly boysenberry jam, cocoa, cloves, vanilla, bourbon, oak. Similar on palate, overall seems fading, dusty and dry, likely past prime.

Splash decant ... A very good Zin, from a truly spectacular vineyard. Blueberry pie on the nose and initial palate. Drying, firm tannins, and spice come in next with hints of nutmeg and coffee. Then just a bit of tart cranberry to finish. Excellent, but somewhat over-priced, though perhaps I say that only because I'm spoiled by Bedrock's take on Monte Rosso, which is slightly less $ and a good bit better.

Surprisingly mellow for a Zin, but still peppery, spicy, and full textured without a lot of fruit. Definitely on the latter side of aged, so these will need to be drunk very soon. Yay for me!

Young but drinking very good. PnP.

Medium alcohol on the nose. A little tart and spicy on the palate, medium to short finish. Getting some chocolate and tobacco notes, slightly tannic but it doesn't rip your face off.

This can definitely lay down for a few years. Have two more bottles to check in on over the next few years.

15.8% abv. Dark purple coloration with viscosity. This wine could be described as sweet (a product of the ripe dark berries) or sweet! for the immediate pleasure it gives the drinker. Succulent ripe berries. It carries the high alcohol fairly well but is not everyone's style. I opened this to decide if I want to order the Biale Monte Rosso in the latest vintage to be made available on the mailing list. I am trying to cut back on wine orders, but if I place an order with Biale, I may include the Monte Rosso.

Very nice with some spaghetti tonight. Big enough to complement the meal, with a lingering flavor. 15% alcohol is evident. Tannins are fading and think this is about in its sweet spot. I have another bottle which I will be comfortable drinking any time over the next 18 months, but no rush.

Consumed as part of a flight of 2004 Biale Zins (04 Aldo's, 04 Old Crane Ranch, 04 Grande Vineyard, 04 Monte Rosso and 04 Black Chicken). This clearly stood above the rest. Drank almost cab like, so no overt jamminess. Dark fruited notes, a touch of forest floor and a wonderful richness. Has some decent structure still, could go a few more years.

We enjoyed a flight of 2004 Biale Zins (04 Aldo's, 04 Old Crane Ranch, 04 Grande Vineyard, 04 Monte Rosso and 04 Black Chicken). The wines, not bad, were not impressive outside the Monte Rosso. It was a baby and had years ahead of it. The Black Chicken was number 2 and the most jammy of the group. Grande Vineyard was showing burnt brown sugar and Aldo's was balanced buy uninspiring. The Old Crane Ranch was more bad amarone than anything else. Not appealing at all.

Good nose. Somewhat muted flavors on the palate. Good complexity but perhaps a bit low on the acidity causes the muted flavors.
