Big, bold flavors in this well-balanced wine. I don’t know the blend, but it clearly has enough Syrah to please my palate. Excellent.

Inky in the glass. Brambly, blackberry nose with baking spice, mint and sage notes. Full bodied and rich with chalky tannins. This is a lovely wine that represents well one of the top Cabernet Sauvignon growing regions in California. Terravenos assisted with these notes.

A perfume of rose petal, lavender, raspberry, black cherry and red fruits like cranberry and a tiny bit of chocolate, tobacco. Perfume carries over to palate with cranberry and raspberry flavors. This is a big wine with medium grippy tannins. Terravenos contributed to these notes.

Pale garnet in color. Dried cranberry and bing cherry on the nose - potpourie. Medium-bodied palate presents a little jammy with medium plus grippy tannins and a touch of caramel with cherry notes on the finish. High alcohol. I am not a Pinot fan, but i always like a good one from KW Ranch fruit!

Pale ruby in color. Bouquet of cranberry, raspberry, red plum, and warm baking spices, followed by a touch of garrigue. Raspberry and cranberry on the palate with medium minus tannins and medium acid, leading to a slightly bitter finish. Not cherry at all. The intensity of the fruit is not well balanced by the alcohol. Terravenos assisted with these notes.

Medium lemon in color. Some lees on the creamy, biscuity nose - reminiscent of a sauterne! Nectarine, peach and minerality on the palate. Lacks acidity and brightness. Drink now. Terravenos assisted me with these notes.

I had the opportunity to taste this when the owner paid a visit to one of our wine club meetings and presented a couple of her wines. She spent quite a long time with us taking our questions and teaching us about a whole litany of wine topics. Very insightful!

Apparently she works for Wrath winery and started Scratch as a side project as a means of expressing her own winemaking talent through the creation of her own label. Not keen on owning a vineyard, she has partnerships with a litany great of wineries in the Monterey area (e.g.: Boekenoogen, KW Ranch and Ventana) through which she purchases grapes to make her own wines. As such, Scratch's repertoire of wine offerings present quite a bit of variety within the 1500 cases they produce annually.

This particular wine was made of grapes from “Kristy’s Vineyard, which is owned by Ventana Winery. A bit warmer than your typical Riesling growing conditions, one can expect a bit more sunny fruitiness vice the crispness and minerality one would find in Alsacian or New York Rieslings. The vintner was aiming for a dry style, and it was fermented to dryness; this Riesling has a mere 0.065 g/l of residual sugar compared to the 9 g/l found in sweeter Rieslings. In her words, “This wine is only as sweet as I let it be.” It then spent some time in neutral oak to give it a bit of oxygen influence and smooth its texture.

Medium straw in color, this wine is moderately aromatic with a nose rich in apple, lemon zest and a touch of honey. Upon sipping, one is met with a medium-light bodied wine with a high acidity (it’s pH is 3.2) that is noticeable but not sharp. It feels fuller in texture compared to more northerly Rieslings. There is quite a bit of yellow apple on the attack, and this is followed by the emergence of green apple and more lemon zest. There is also a hint of something tropical in the background, pineapple perhaps. Quite fruity, in fact. The finish is quite long, leaving one with a lingering yellow apple note that gradually faces into nothingness. Interestingly, after a few sips a vague petroleum note emerges, but it’s faint.

Overall an enjoyable wine! Not the steely, minerally Riesling I’m used to, but instead fuller and fruitier. Not bad!

This particular wine is from KW Ranch Vineyards and is a 50/50 blend of Clone 667 and Pommard 4 grapes, 20% of which were whole cluster fermented and given time in neutral oak. The intent of the blend is to capture the fruitiness of the 667 clone simultaneously with the earthiness of the Pommard 4 grapes.

Light ruby in color with a transparent core, this wine is quite aromatic with notes of ripe red fruits in the nose along with a notable mushroom character (a unique touch for a New World wine) and a bit of star anise. Upon sipping, one is met with a light-bodied wine that is low in tannins and surprisingly supple given its gripping acidity. It is rather soft on the attack, but the acidity gradually sets in to the point where it is "tingling" to say the least. The flavor profile starts off with ripe red cherry, from which blackberry jam and a bit of pomegranate later emerge over a substrate of earth and a hint of cedar. There is also a notable earthiness, reminiscent of potting soil. The finish is long and dry, leaving one with a lingering acidic tingle and a whisper of that red cherry.

Overall a solid choice! The acidity is biting, even for a Monterey pinot noir, so I'd recommend enjoying this with something with a higher fat content. Smoked gouda, anybody? Perhaps some BBQ pork loin? Either would do quite nicely!
