Almost black in color, the wine is still extremely young. On the nose there were notes of eucalyptus, mint, and smoked meat. The taste is still very rich with sensations of barbecue, liquid blackberries and more mint which seems to come across in many of the SQN wines. After having this 3 times over the last year, it merits further cellaring of 10+ years.

SQN - Legends: Very impressive wine with plenty of fresh and young blackberry/cherry fruit but also some beef, smoke, spices and vanilla. Everything is just mixed together with a wonderful acidity and tannic bite.
This is again a pleasure to taste this wine and it would be really nice to taste it even further down the road as it just keeps getting better. It is however drinking extremely nicely right now!
Just an impressive and beautiful wine that just lacks the final depth to reach perfection.

Unusual, powerful and interesting wine. Took about an hour to come into it's own and open up. From their it evolved over the course of the evening with each tasting very complex, pleasurable, yet different. Lovely wine with great balance and lots of secondary and tertiary flavors as it opened. Great structure. Fruit and tannins balance against solid, but not powerful, acids. Ready to drink now.

A clear reference wine for California Syrah, this is a stud. Big, balanced, bold and loaded with juicy, rich fruit and flavor. The wine coats your mouth and palate in all the right ways. There is probably no reason to age this, but I'm not sure you need to hurry to drink it. Still, I want to finish my remaining bottles by the time the wine hits its 20 birthday.

Solid nose and enjoyable all around. Probably at its absolute peak now. Well integrated and wonderful. Awesome wine but lacked a bit of distinction.

Wine seemed off. Harsher and thinner than my previous SQNs. Cork was a bit dubious. Hoping this was just a weak bottle.

A day of lots of SQN and a few more!; 12/7/2014-12/9/2014 (Loretta Paganini School of Cooking and the Woods of Newbury): Absolutely my favorite SQN ever. This may not have been 100 points this time, but just barely. It may have been the setting. The nose has black raspberries, blue berries, iodine, slight toast and spice. Layered and complex. Young at probably not at peak although this has been so good since release, peak may be a misnomer. Absolutely fabulous bottle of wine.

Splendid bouquet with black fruits, sweet spices and beautiful toasted oak aromas. On the palate licorice, leather, blood, beautiful spiciness like white pepper. Beautiful acidity. Concentrated and elegant as well with a long finish. Extraordinary wine.

The theme of this flight was - one grape, four countries, served blind. The grape turned out to be syrah, and the countries were Australia, France, Italy and the U.S. Wines ended up to be 02 Clarendon Hills Astralis, 01 La Turque, 02 Sine Qua Non Just for the Love of it, and 01 Macchiole Scrio. The first three were all terrific and only the Scrio couldn't stand up to the competition. For me, the SQN just squeeked out a victory over the Guigal, with the Astralis just a whisker behind. Interestingly, most of the folks in the group could pick out the Australian and Californian wines, due to their blue fruit flavors (most pronounced in the Astralis but also present here and not in the other two wines). When I first had the JFTLOI, a couple of years after release, it was so powerful that it could barely be drunk. Now all that has resolved and we have a mature beast, with every hair in place and every flavor in balance. Just a great wine with blueberry, blackberry, vanilla, oak, licorice, a hint of cherry and touch of clove. I would almost have preferred to concentrate on just this one wine at the expense of all the all other great wines in this tasting.

KYD #2: Impressive nose with sweet blackberry and black cherries but also lovely notes of buttermilk, bonfire, smoke and aged beef.
The flavors are equally impressive overall showing some sweet dark cherry fruit but with an almost crazy intense acidity.
It still seems very young due to its compact style but still has a lot of complexity and even though it is dense in its flavors it has retained its drinkability due to the impressive acidity.
Lots of extreme flavors but still kept in balance by a very impressive acidity structure.
A monumental wine!

Some great wine for the end of 2013 (Our home): My favorite SQN and still is. Amazing wine. Light on its feet but huge. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, black pepper, iodine and leather. Full bodied yet slick texture. Still youthful. I can still recall people saying these would never age. BS. This has years, left in it. At ten, it is not at peak. It just keep unwinding in the glass. From the days when I could buy this at retail here.

Sine Qua Non Dinner, volume II (Maloney & Porcelli, NYC): only with this group would you have a backup bottle of JFTLOI on hand... Still very youthful, with lots of time ahead of it. Red fruit, dried sweet spice (clove). really elegant mouthfeel and a lovely finish.

11th wedding anniversary.

Just a hint of bricking on the legs. Deep aromas of cassis, vanilla dark red fruits.

On the palate, it just fills out with deep flavors of black cherry, blackberry, hints of vanilla. Soooo smooth with a long finish. Tannins have integrated as have the flavors.

This wine tastes plenty concentrated and fresh, but I can't help but think that time isn't helping this one when such amplified fruit is a main feature. Tasted against the 2007 dangerous birds Syrah, and thought this was clearly beaten out. Somehow thought the Viognier got in the way of the Syrah here a bit.

Sine Qua Non "Postcard" Dinner (Chez Hill - Barrington IL): Ripe black fruit, black pepper, licorice, baking spice aromas. Everything comes through again on palate in incredible balance and harmony. Ripe fruit supported with great tannins and acidity. Really sensational Best of the three times I have had this wine, and i expect it will continue to improve for another year or two.

What more can be said about this wine? Great aromas of spice, fruit, vanilla. Opened on 10th wedding anniversay celebration. Aired two hours. Seemingly seamless with a complexity of flavors that are hard to describe. Clearly blueberry, cassis, some earthyness. Tannins are hard to pick out, but there is clearly heft to the wine. Finish lingers and lingers...not quite for ten years, but it leaves you sated but craving more! Glad I have couple more. Was paired with Spottswoode 2002 and Insignia 2002. All were excellent, but if I had to rank order them, it would be Insignia, JFTLOI, Spottswoode. All less than one point apart :) All in all....a great night!
