5/26/2021 - sdwineguru Likes this wine: 90 pointsWashington 2004 Stephenson Cellars Syrah Reserve (gift, with other wines, mostly fine older Cabernets and blends, from a late friend's estate). Dark purple, viscous (14.4 alc.); lots of sediment; ripe grape, peppery, earthy, herbaceous nose; mid-big body; mid-plus tannins; decent fruit; long semi-hot finish. w/picnic fare. 16 UC Davis scale, 90 other scales. |

6/14/2014 - tahaus Likes this wine: 90 pointsAn 8 year old merlot from Walla Walla eh? Yeah. And Stephenson Cellars makes a damn good one. His merlot is bigger and more full than most. Cherry and vanilla, a hint of sandlewood I believe, and a touch of black pepper make this one of the best merlot's I've had from Walla Walla. Try any of his wines as well, if you can find them. They are made to age... |

4/3/2014 - jnewman77 wrote: NRThis wine has potential I think, but I'm not completely sold. There is a really nice core of dark fruit and juicy acidity with nice underlying structure. For my taste though there is too much oak. It may have the stuff to integrate it better over the next several years, but at 6 years old with still this much oak showing I'm not sure it will completely integrate. If the oak were dialed back, it would certainly have potential. |

Ripe banana, dried mango, and sulfured pineapple notes are accented by a hint of lime zest. Integrates the 14.8% alcohol well, no harshness, but a real big mouthful of wine. |

Well integrated and soft tannins. Overall, very smooth and highly aromatic. In a great place right now. Nice discovery. |

3/13/2013 - mattlennert Likes this wine: 91 pointsMy Gosh!, this stuff is so good. Just as good as the 2005. I have one bottle left of each and I am going to hold out for as long as I can. CT says this peaks in 2013 and I think it might go a year longer, but if you have this you will really enjoy it. |

3/9/2013 - mattlennert Likes this wine: 93 pointsI have stored this bottle since I purchased it at the winery in 2007. The color is still a deep purple with a 1/4 inch gradient towards a blue-black center. Beautiful color. The nose smells like a baking chocolate cake and cherries. There is also a Chinese 5 spice aroma that is delightful. After an hour open the wine began to show that notorious Walla Walla Syrah funk on the nose. I'm digging that very much. Without a doubt the dominant fruit flavor in the mouth is cherries; deep black cherries. There is some cinnamon, liquorice and cocoa powder. The finish is very long on this wine, at least 5 minutes and leaving a lingering cherry reduction on the back of my tongue. The tannins are still grippy, so this tells me I can hold my last bottle for a while longer. Damn. I should have bought more at the time! |

12/27/2011 - lopaka wrote: 88 pointsStarted out with a bright huckleberry and leather nose with a bit of heat. After a couple hours mellowed out to a very nice cab with dark ripe fruit, leather and cedar nose with just a touch of earthyness. The heat dissapated and the tannins nicely balanced out the fruit. |
