I am curious if there are many people outside of the Pacific Northwest of the US who may be aware of the stellar and highly affordable (especially given the consistent high level of their products), Columbia Crest line of Reserve red wines.
This (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) darkly opaque beauty has aromas of intensely concentrated blueberry and boysenberry compote, with a bouquet of faintly smokey, tight grained oak.
The utterly voluptuous medium + viscosity mouthfeel conveys ultra extracted flavors of sweet blue/black fruits, supported by a slippery glycerin-like, yet bright acidity, soft tannins, and a deliciously silky (15% ABV) delivery of a comprehensive enjoyment of fruit redolent over the entire length of the palate, reminiscent of a more rounded version of the offerings of my favorite Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon producers.
Some may understandably draw extraction comparisons with a Ruby Port, or Amarone style of vinification, with no objections from me, but this still youthful wine’s varietal identity is assured.
These Washington State wines, produced by Columbia Crest, are well deserving of sampling.

This was amazing still for an 11 year old wine. Quintessential WA State Cab Sauv at its finest at an amazing price point.

2016 Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Stonetree Vineyard - Clone specific

Columbia Crest has a dizzingly number of expressions of Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon, from many growing regions from West to East, and almost too many specific sub areas and vineyards, not to mention other red varietals and interesting blends of these Vitis Vinifera cast of characters. I begin by stating my extreme bias toward, it seems, the never ending variety of their delicious offerings, in particular their Reserve labeled reds, and especially the Walter Clore wines we have ordered through our membership in their wine club.
This beauty is no exception to the aforementioned enjoyment and appreciation I have had with every iteration of these wines I have sampled.
This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, Clone 5 (there is a paucity of information regarding this and other stated clones of Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon varietals enlisted by Columbia Crest winemakers), has an impenetrabley dark black cherry, almost black squid ink, color to the rim, and the seductive nose has sweet, slightly smokey aromas of intensely extracted blue and black fruit, laced with vanilla, pencil box (an antiquated reference, for those of you who may have had one in the distant past), and a peripheral corona of the sweet perfume from the robust level of 15.5% ABV.
The mouthfeel is supple and viscous, with sweet (almost too sweet sans food) blueberry, black cherry and blackberry flavors that spread over the palate levels like a lackadaisical tsunami, flowing well past the finish, lingering for minutes.
This wine proclaims it’s youth, and will likely evolve over the next ten years. This Cabernet Sauvignon does border on the fortified wine category in that the character is, although not unidimensional, lacking, again sans food, in layers of the flavor profile, and the sweetness is just to the point of being cloying. It is delicious and does possess an underlying base of acidity that buoys the flavors and eschews flabbiness in fruit that had been allowed an extended hang time.
Light, non spicy Asian dumplings, salad, cheese, olives, bread and carrots do not appreciably curb the wine’s endearing intensity (not a personally perceived deficit), but a meal of hearty vegetarian savory content, grilled or barbecued meats or Italian cuisine, would compliment and sufficiently mollify the wine, but at this stage of the wine’s development, certainly would not tame it.

Opened the day before Independance Day. Nose of black fruits and coffee. Slight hint of red fruit almost like a pinot noir but not much. Poured a small sample in my glass to taste. Still a deep ruby/purple with a little bricking on the edges showing it's age. More dark fruits on the palate with more coffee and dark chocolate. Poured the remainder in the decanter as there was some heat, astrigency and sediment from the age. After 30 minutes the heat and astringency dissipated. More of the same after pouring a full glass; black fruits like blackberry and plum along with coffee and dark chocolate. I was surprised at the semi sweet taste as I thought the fruit would shine through. Finish was a little thin and short maybe 20 seconds or so. Ever so slight baking spice finish on the palate. To me this wine, although tasty, was too thin compared to the wines I most enjoy. Just not enough punch for me. Maybe it's tailing off its peak, however the wine is still in balance. Flavors are probably just fading.

Only have the one bottle. Nice fruit balanced by reasonable acid, good legs, deep purple. Opened a year early I think - tannins could do with a little more mellowing given acidity. Not the crazy fruit forwardness of most new world cabs (good) but not classic old world precision in structure.

Very nice wahluke cab. This wine is in a very good place right, but will continue to hold up. I doubt it will improve much at this point.

Excellent wine, fully mature. Dark garnet, mostly opaque. Typical varietal aromas of cassis with a touch of herbs. Medium-full body, sweet and round, good varietal flavors. Still some tannin, but soft and in the background. Very smooth, balanced, long aftertaste. An excellent value. My only bottle, purchased at the winery. Fully mature, ready to enjoy, don't think it will improve with more age.

Wow, was not expecting this to be as good as it was but it was. Tannins are still nicely there but well integrated. Oak is spot on. Lots of dark fruits with a touch of mint. The finish is just amazing still. Wish I had a couple more bottles.

Nice oak and complex. Wish I had more. Had to aerate the first glasses. Be sure to test aerate versus non aerate & see a major difference if not decanted.

Bottle 4 of 6. It's just hitting its stride. Wahluke Slope fruit with good concentration and excellent acidity makes for more of a Bordeaux blend than a run-of-the-mill merlot; the 10% cab helps in that direction. Jolly good!

Still a bit young at this point, but with some air it opened up nicely. Great nose that evolves in the glass and it's very smooth on the palate. Decent finish.
