- Ruby color - Medium Ruby in the glass and very aromatic. Light but sweet red fruits, asian spice, and an elegant lightness not found in any other American grenache. Reallly intriguing. I don't think most afficianados would identfy this as 100% grenache.

wind gap (the barlow): Raspberry-licorice on the nose, both red and dark berries, no oak, some sweetness from the fruit. a rather big wine (I suspect contrary to the intentions of the winemaker) in spite of the 0 % oak regime.

Man, I just love this wine. Great red fruits with spice and minerals, but super lightweight. An easy to drink summer red. Glad I have 5 more.

Very delicate, fantastic fruit clarity, so well balanced even at a young state. Fantastic quality, but even so a hard price point to swallow if encouraged for more. One of the best American grenache renditions available.

Just a couple of weeks after this landed on my doorstep, I had to give one a try. On first opening it was all ripe strawberry and spice. I poured a glass, and let it sit for an hour while I made dinner. On retasting the spice character was accentuated, and some warm herbs were added to the mix. The tannic structure popped up with time, as a bit of a dry finish. There was no shortage of finishing flavor though, so some cellaring seems in order for further development and integration. Excellent showing for such a young wine. Half the bottle is on the counter, waiting for tomorrow night. I think air will do it good.

This may be as close as I get to a Pobega, as this arrived on 4/10. I finished the Wind Gap Nellesen syrah last night, so decided to find another glass of wine and settled on staying with the Wind Gap new release theme. Open about an hour, a spicy aromatic, something that feels akin to an alcohol marker, although listed at 13.75% on the bottle, I'm having a challenge thinking this is what I am sensing. I enjoy the fruit here, a mix of strawberry and cherry, sitting in some herb and a rocky finish. After a couple hours open, the aromatic shows a flowery note but I still detect the same spicy note. The fruit profile has expanded with air, as watermelon and dried strawberry emerge. Then finally, a day later, and without a chill and really at room temp (call it 68), I'm looking for the aromatic from y/day. At room temp, I'd figure that alc note to blossom as there isn't any cool frame inhibiting it, but really there's none there. Pretty clean aromatic actually, as I think the floral and spice are more what defines the aromatic. As to the fruit, that dried cherry and red fruit profile from y/day is well anchored now and this gives the structure and palate tannin that brightens the wine. Heck, even a sense of soil mixes with the rocks in the finish. This is grenache in my style, and true to the Pax way of making wines on the lower register of things, yet not losing flavor or definition (akin to the 2012 Nellesen syrah I finished earlier this week). Dig it--solid and well made.

Red fruits throughout, with some soft baking spices in the background. Didn't notice any oak, very lightweight and easy to drink.

Blind: guessed Grenache

Light garnet color and good sparkling clarity. There is a strong bright cherry flavor combined with gentle baking spice. Juicy, lean, and a hint of jolly rancher watermelon. The lack of legs indicates this is a low alcohol wine and probably from a cool vintage. Steve guessed the produce correctly, well done.

I really enjoy this wine and this is the second bottle I have now drank, the previous being last summer. There is a purity with this wine and it comes across as balanced, clean--this is why I enjoy it so much, it seems transparent. Just pure red fruit of watermelon, cherry, sweet raspberry and juicy. With about 4 hours of air, some structure appears too, in the form of some astringent tannin, which suggests good life ahead. No traces of wood, no heat, no density, all good. Bought 2 more of these for the cellar this week, probably should have bought 4!

Decanted two hours. Bright vibrant pink hued Kool Aid red in the glass - and a bit cloudy. Love it.
The nose was a tad muted but sported light tart cranberry, touches of green olive and radish with nice saline elements as well as some light baking spice and golden raisins. Very unique nose. With time it showed more complexity and mouth feel. The finish was in balance though nice and tart - in the best way. Lower alcohol was pleasant and the acidity was present giving the wine energy and making it more sessionable. Another winner from Wind Gap and Pax. A great line up this vintage as a whole.

Birthday dinner at Ink in W. Hollywood. Bright and full nose of strawberry, raspberry and herbs. Palate has light-to-medium body with loads and loads of herby red fruit. Some minerals too. There appears to be minimal manipulation or oak - very natural with good energy and verve. Well crafted and tasty.

As others have noted this is a light and lively Grenache with an old world style. Fresh fruit, mild spice and crisp finish made this a real food friendly wine, wish I had more.

Nice bottle. FMIII opened this the night before and it was rolling along beautifully. Kicking off elegant aromas but I was wrestling with exact notes. Raspberry, strawberry, and dry herbs were what popped into my mind after starring at it for a moment. Good balance of fruit, stems, acid, and mouthfeel.

I bought 2 of these through the mailer, no previous experience with it but I buy a fair amount of Wind Gap so this was an easy choice. Bottle lists alc at 13.7%, made in 2 concrete eggs and 4 barrels. Last night, I opened and enjoyed without a decant. Dug the juicy, herby strawberry flavors on this wine. Mixed with that is the light frame, juicy and fresh. The remark someone else made about "not messed with" is really spot on. To me, this tastes pure and nicely balanced. Will see if air and a light chill has any further impact but for an open and enjoy perspective, works great.....a day later, what I missed about enjoying this wine yesterday are two additional aspects, both acidity and cherry/watermelon. They both work together to really bolster the wine's core, along with the strawberry hard candy and some minerally tannin even in the finish tonight. One last thing worth pitching into this note...there is a cool, minty, indian spice like note on the aromatic which I really dig. All in, I got no budget this month but I need to pick up more of this, as this wine is a fine example of balance, flavor and light color.

Black current and wood notes on the nose, with some pepper and roasted herbs, and some candied cherries at the end. Rich and juicy on the palate, with dark fruit and herbs, some spice wood on the mid-palate, and a nice cherry finish.

As another reviewer mentioned, very lively and light on its feet. A pleasure to drink, zesty red fruits, lots of character on the palate. Good finish. Pure and not messed with, bravo.

Wind Gap Tasting with Scott Schultz (Forestville, CA): 50% whole cluster. Nose is bright with raspberry and herbs. Palate is medium bodied and echos the nose. On the simple side today with room for upside development I suppose. Smooth finish.

Very interesting interpretation of Grenache. Very light color with almost rose type fruit. Strawberry, watermelon rind, jalapeño, white pepper. Very dry with an intensity from the tannin and acidity giving life to the wine. Very nice.

Tasting at The Watering Hole- Sandhi & other Terroir Selections (Los Olivos, CA): Ruby color. Aromas of fresh strawberry and cocoa cloaked in dense earth. Flavors of mulled spice and densely layered cherry and berry notes, along with hints of mineral. Rustic grainy tannins with a degree of finesse. Medium finish.
