A deep, opaque purple wine. Rich blackcurrant and blueberry fruit on the nose, some toasty oak and a clean lemon-orange streak. Similar fruit profile on the palate, moderate extraction, some cigar box notes. Tannins soft and integrated, acidity balanced. Clean fruit on the finish. 15.5 points

This has a good mineral element to the nose when opened - classic Chablis. But there are hints of richness too, with even a hint of pineapple, and an oatmealy edge. As the wine opens up this becomes even more prominent. On the palate there is crisp acidity married with rich yet elegant, buttery fruit, which builds on the palate to give a weighty, creamy, butterscotch, endpalate. Lovely finish, with a lingering, savoury length. Undoubtedly the best Brocard bottling I can recall. 17 points

This is a well coloured wine, garnet with a pink-orange rim showing signs of maturity. Initially some berry fruits on the nose, but soon opening out to give prominent secondary aromas of mushrooms and leafy undergrowth. The palate is fairly full bodied, with powdery tannins and a firm, perhaps somewhat rustic texture. Some good blackberry fruit and acid balance, which persists through the finish into a pleasing length. 16 points

Despite a pale colour, this wine has a lovely nose of pineapple, quince and marmalade. There is clean and fresh acidity on the palate, with honeyed botrytis. Delicious, and all too easy to drink. 17 points

A rich nose of lemon and orange marmalade, botrytis and quince. Rich and lush on the palate, with very low acidity which throws the wine out of balance. Akin to drinking liquid marmalade, with nuances of quinine and herbal tea on the endpalate. Clean finish and a good length. 16.5 points

A fairly delicate nose, with some quinine, citrus peel and herbal tea. A gently honeyed, rich palate, with quinine and white fruits. Has just sufficient acidity. Pleasant drinking. 15.5 points

This wine has a lemon and honey-gold appearance, with just a hint of green. At first it is very dumb and unyielding on the nose, but with time it offers up honeyed oatmeal with mineral and aniseed nuances. An elegant texture on the palate, but as with the nose it is tight and closed. Character builds in the mouth, developing a typical rich, oatmeal endpalate, with bacon fat leading into coffee and nuts on the finish. Balanced acidity. Very young, but has very good potential. Drink 2003 onwards. 16.5+ points

A pale lemon gold, with a nose of apricots, peaches, and just the barest hint of pine nuts. Quite elegant and restrained, and still quite youthful and tight on the palate. Good fruit with the beginnings of a rich texture, well balanced with fresh acidity, this wine will probably drink better in a year or so. 15 points

Nice mahogany red fading to a pink-red rim. The nose has good cherry fruit with a vein of new oak. Soft, chalky tannins on the palate, well balanced, with obvious cherry fruit, and a slightly gamey streak. A rustic, slightly coarse texture, but a good fruit finish. Good value drinking. 15 points

Quite a vibrant red-purple hue. Blackberry pie and sweet, new oak on the nose. Pleasant fruit on the palate, with slightly prominent acidity and drying, chalky tannins. Quite a rustic feel to it, but quite good nevertheless. 15 points

This wine has a lovely purple hue when poured. A nose to savour - black cherry fruit, a lick of new oak, and delicious roasted herb and leafy undergrowth complexity. The palate has a lovely body, and an almost seamless integration of the chalky tannins. The acidity is spot-on, balanced and pure. Superb fruit, and more roasted herbs. Certainly not rustic, an elegant drink, and superb value for money. 16.5 points

A similar colour here. Complex, more curranty blackcurrant fruit this time. Again some new oak. Soft but well structured on the palate. Firm but integrating tannins, smoky and curranty fruit. Rich wine, with a spicy, curranty, roasted herb, cigar-smoke finish. Good complexity. 17 points

Certainly this has the deepest colour of all the wines in this flight. It is giving very little on the nose, just a momentary hint of caramel oak, but otherwise this is acting really dumb. On the palate it is big, rich and very tannic. Seems very closed down. Those tannins dominate the finish, typical of 1986. 16.5+? points

A ruby garnet colour, even more open on the nose, with smoky, weedy blackcurrant fruit, and some new oak. Packed with fruit on the palate, with better integration of tannins. Elegant texture, medium bodied, and balanced. More of that lovely weedy fruit, but despite this my overall opinion is a rich, firm, evolved wine from a good vintage. 17 points

Similar hue, but less dense. More open, with a cedary, blackcurrant nose. This seems quite austere, and somewhat hard, particularly on the finish. Still has some unintegrated tannins. Stony, curranty fruit. Not showing that well tonight. 16.5+? points

One of the paler wines in the flight, but still an appealing purple-garnet colour. Open nose, with dense , blackcurrant cassis fruit. Rounded structure on the palate, but with quite a prominent tannic backbone, so much so that I initially wondered if this was the 1986 (until I got to the 1986, that is). Good acidity with plump raspberry and blackberry fruit. Slightly tarry, sooty finish with all those tannins. 18 points

A deep, ruby garnet colour. The nose screams young wine - ground coffee, toffee oak and ripe blackcurrant fruit. On the palate some rich fruit with balanced acidity and soft tannins which only really attack on the finish. Delicious, and just about ready for drinking. 18+ points

Similarly dense and dark, a feature that had me mark these two wines as the pair of 1996s. Closed on the nose. Strange, very sweet pastille fruit on the palate. Good tannic structure, but not at all austere. Seems opulent and a touch New World in style. Will be interesting to see what happens to that sweet cassis fruit. 18.5+ points

Good colour. Ripe, elegant blackcurrant fruit and plum jam on the nose, with some secondary vegetal and cigar box notes providing a touch of interest. Super balance on the palate, elegant fruit, and a streak of toasty/smoky oak. Very easy to drink, probably at peak now. 15 points

A moderate cherry red hue. The nose has obvious black cherry fruit, with soft doughy and pastry notes. There is some new oak, but little in the way of secondary development. On the palate, good acidity keeps it fresh, despite a fairly rich texture with lots of fruit. Fat, chalky and very drying tannins are quite well integrated. Easy drinking, but with a less impressive structure than the 1996. 15+ points

This has a garnet-purple hue, and a lovely nose of stony and mineral blackcurrant fruit, with a touch of blackcurrant leaf. The palate has ripe fruit, but that mineral note persists. Minimally noticeable tannins and balanced acidity give an easy drinking, yet firm and elegant drink. 16.5 points

At first there is an unusual mealy edge to the nose, but this disappears leaving wonderful aromas of limes. The palate is striking - it is superbly balanced and elegant rather than big and 'in your face'. It has clean, floral fruit with rich, lime cordial aromas. Nicely textured, clean fruity finish. 16 points
