Very pure colour, very deep. Meaty, developed. Full, textured, rich, creamy, upfront, powerhouse Grenache style. A little hot and baked. Stony, grippy finish. This is very good, and much more impressive than the 1999 which was the last vintage I tasted (and I do wonder whether that bottle was 100%). 16.5 points

From Block 27, Peumo Vineyard. This is a terroir wine, the label tells me. It also tells me it is 14.5%. Super, deep, glossy-inky hue. And a lovely nose too, just what one wants from a good Chilean; pepper, tobacco and chocolate-coated black fruits. Lovely palate; soft and voluptuous, creamy and seductive, with low acidity, but with a little grip in the background which shows more on the finish. In fact a decent, dry, grippy length. This is enjoyable in a leave-your-brain-at-the-door sort of way, although not one for the cellar I feel. 16 points

I see Cordier and I think Bordeaux, but this bottle turns out to be a very tasty white Burgundy. Good nose. Open, obvious, honeyed, with some oak showing. Full palate, showing a honeyed-oak wrapper to the white fruit. This is a very good, approachable style, and my favourite of the three whites I think. 16.5 points

Just early maturity on inspection. Dark, muted fruit on the nose, with smoky character and some acetic notes. Cool, balanced mouthfeel, but again showing some obvious acetic acid on midpalate, and dominating the finish. The elegant weight fails to compensate. Not the character I would expect from this highly regarded estate - I suspect bacterial contamination.

A tasting of the NV cuvée on the market at the time, I believe. A producer I have ear-marked for my forthcoming Champagne feature. A little cheesy on the nose, denoting Pinot here. Apples too, as pointed out by Toby. Good, altogether palate. 16.5 points

Mid gold, plentiful bead, large bubbles, obviously a youthful wine. And yet the nose seems so forward; aromas of coffee and toffee, with an autolytic yeast component. And then on the palate the youth shows again. Piles of mousse, with lovely youthful, citrus-tinged acidity, although some of the more mature characteristics also show through. Somewhat medicinal in the finish, lacks elegance and balance, but overall very drinkable. This apparent advanced development may be related to the cork, which didn't show a great deal of elasticity, and perhaps poor storage before my purchase; this bottle may not be typical. 16 points

Wow - five years since I last opened a bottle of this; I recall I opened the first on a Sunday evening with dinner. No loss of intensity over the years, but the hue has adopted a more mature, less glossy appearance. Great nose, matured to a meaty-berry Cabernet fruit, with an animalistic overlay. Rich, sweet, iron-edged blackcurrant fruit, but with a firm although fading grippy backbone. Showing good maturity, just approaching a pointe now, but will drink well for years yet. Great, fresh, crushed berry acidity. The palate swirls with extract and body. Sweet length. This is lovely. 18 points

Moderate depth of colour, a straw-gold hue. Very appealing on the nose, with aromas of coffee, honeycomb, wet wool and toffee. Moderate, elegant weight on the palate, with plenty of interest. Quite a bit of grippy structure alongside the rich, rounded flavours, but leading into a grippy, almost dry finish, although it gives a more full, rounded impression at slightly warmer temperatures. Great length. The one thing it lacks is concentration through the midpalate. This would go very well with many foods. This is ready now, but should drink well for years. 16.5 points

The label actually says 'Domaine de Vodanis' without any mention of Huet, but the design is unmistakeable. It is a vineyard they rented for two years, and I previously tasted this wine at the domaine in 2003. As noted then, this is actually a sec tendre wine (4-15 g/l residual sugar), so it carries a little more around the middle than many a sec. Not much on the nose - as with last time. A little mineral. But the palate has evolved. Slightly creamy. Full, almost sensual texture on midpalate. Mineral-apple element. Very good. 15.5 points

An old favourite for quaffing, which has occasionally disappointed (the 2002), occasionally really impressed. The winemaking team at Vina Casablanca have obviously cottoned onto the wonder of early harvest and methoxypyraxzines, as the nose here is loaded with asparagus, tinned peas, green capsicum and greengage. In fact, anything green. Fresh, very dry, firm palate with more of the same. I quite like it, but as I only drink Sauvignon once or twice a year nowadays (excepting that blended with Semillon and botrytis) I can take this sort of assault. Good. 16 points

Showing a healthy tawny note of maturity, but still with plenty of deep, velvety red colour. The nose has certainly developed, now showing mature, stony black fruit, with notes of fine leather too. Very dry palate, with a little tannic grip to the structure showing more on the finish, but otherwise this is just about ready. Nice middleweight texture, just on the lean side, accentuated by that nice coating of tannin. Meaty, macerated berry flavour with decent acidity. Drink now and over the next 3-5 years. Very good. 16+ points

The first from my case of halves, I noticed a slight colour variation in some bottles. I chose this, one of the slightly more deeply coloured wines. From a half bottle. Rich, golden hue. Good noble rot on the nose, with quince and orange notes. Very good palate, balanced, fresh, but maturing and with plenty of rot character. Smoky pineapple, good texture, with a ripe, full finish. Very good. May yet improve, but drinking well now to my taste. 17+ points

Purchased Summer 2003. The last bottle of a six-pack which I seem to have demolished in record time. This bottle showed best of the lot. Lovely colour, pale gold, but showing the barest hint of coppery onion skin. Fine, herbal, baked bread nose with a touch of honey and nut. Gorgeous, almost creamy aromas, if that's possible! Full, bright, delightful palate, showing great style but also with a creamy, nutty, coffee-edged richness. Great finesse here, balanced with fine acidity and a texture on the more hedonistic side for Lanson. I would have never thought it the NV if tasted blind. Delicious. 17 points

A lovely and surprising purple edge to the colour here. But what really delights is the nose, which reeks of classic mineral, iron, blackcurrant, left-bank Cabernet Sauvignon. With time it shows a little more exotic, with black cherry aromas and liquorice coming to the fore. The last time I picked an aroma profile like this I was tasting the 1989 vintage, although 2002 doesn't have the same texture or ripeness. Very nicely structured palate, infused with red and black berry fruits, but with ripe tannins and correct acidity making for a pleasant structure. Good. 16 points

An exceptionally rich, deep colour. Gorgeous nose, showing ripe black cherry fruit with nuances of finely tanned leather and chocolate. Beautiful texture and weight on entry, which is rich, mouth-filling and quite opulent, but with an excellent backbone of ripe yet grippy tannins which peer through on the midpalate, and provide a lovely grip through to the finish. This has great impact on the palate, although it remains unmistakeably left-bank, and has a tannin-derived sense of balance, despite lower than usual acidity. Very good indeed. 17+ points

A mere youngster here. Smoky, fatty, iodine nose. Full palate, good weight, showing decent texture for its age, and correct acidity. Still holding together very well. Meaty, roasted nuts component. Elegant, oily. Very typical aged Rioja. I could drink more of this than the Palacio. 16.5 points

A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Just a brief note; too much conversation! Meaty Cabernet fruit. Decent palate. Minerally fruit. Good weight and texture. Seems short on aromatics or flavour...or perhaps I'm not really paying proper attention. 15? points

Bottled 1952. Aged hue. Volatile. Furniture polish. Good weight on the palate though, maintained through to the finish, although becoming a little disjointed at the finish. A sharp, volatile note too. Will soon fall apart altogether. Drink up if you have any (oh come on, how likely is that?). The first few tastes are interesting, but subsequently it becomes tiring. Difficult to score such an old wine in this condition. It deserves credit, though.

I think some rank this Bandol property very highly indeed. This wine has such a deep glossy hue - Mourvèdre is very resistant to oxidation and so holds its colour well. Meaty, leather aromas. Full, ever so slightly volatile, meaty, yet elegant, with upright acidity. This is maturing well in my opinion. Lovely wine. 16.5 points

Maturing, but with good colour. Mineral, slightly earthy, stony-smoky, perfumed fruit. What a beautiful, captivating nose. Lovely depth of fruit on entry, with fine, ripe, grippy tannins through the midpalate. Great balance, elegant fruit, with a little sweet, rounded extract. Very fine, with just a twist of caramel that will fade with time. Wonderfully put together wine that will improve over the next two to three years. 17.5+ points
