Ripe and plush fruit here. Dark, smoky, concentrated and no doubt immediately appealing. A bit jammy in style rather than just ripe, round and plump, although there is a decent grip underneath it all. Decent acidity too, and it is quite firm underneath. Simple but superfically very flattering composition. Good. 15 points

Vibrant berry fruit and oak on the nose, sweet crunchy berries, red fruit more than black. Lean, quite delicate, not a lot of tannin, rather moderate acidity. Rather understated. Quite well balanced, fresh, well delineated. Decent style. (14-15) points

Dark, smoky, concentrated. The palate is broad, well defined and yet creamy. There is a fine depth, with a great grip, and altogether this is an integrated, well knit, focused and yet seductive package. Certainly a success, although not showing as well as my note from a few months ago - perhaps because this is a totally different tasting environment. Well done Hubert de Boüard! 17+ points

M 65%, CF 35%. A evocative, pure fruit nose, with some sweet oak already. Very indistinct on the palate, flabby, unfocused. No vigour or poise, and we should expect both. Soft, although there are some grippy tannins beneath it all, but it is a little deficient in acidity, freshness and a general presence on the palate. It is decent wine, but we have come to expect more from Angélus in recent years. (15-16?) points

Almost a year on since my last tasting note for this wine. A dark core, with a cherry pink rim, showing a little maturity. Quite withdrawn on the nose though, showing a little cedary fruit, not the primary fruit it previously displayed, although it does open out to give some notes of minerals stones and charcoal. Nicely textured, mid-weight, perhaps rather austere, leading to a bitter grip on the finish. Rather subdued, not quite ready to come out of its shell just yet, but the potential is there. 16.5+ points

A rich lemon gold, as it was with the last bottle I drank; this appearance did nothing to betray the age of the wine. On the nose it is organic, rather funky, quite complex and sweet, dusty and impressive. There is a note of richness, but wrapped up in a reserved, organic frame, with little elements of honey trying to get out. Then with the first mouthful, some signs of residual richness and texture. It is mellifluous, honeyed, but not luscious or overly sweet; rather it has a dry structure when held on the palate. There is a lovely vinosity to it, a spiced honey, well provided with stony, peppery fruit. Complete, broad, not quite silky but certainly beautifully precise and textured. It is pent up, quite fine, but ready to open and give through the endpalate and finish; the sweetness has largely faded from the palate, but it has length and a deep complexity. Delightfully aristocratic, this is excellent. 18.5 points

On the nose this has a chalky, stony, mineral edged fruit style which I think I have noticed from Branaire in a small handful of recent vintages now. Full, rather perfumed, nice ripe tannins, and a chalky, stony edge rather like that on the nose. Decent texture and weight. Branaire seems to be ranking among the better wines St Julien more and more these days. This is not a patch on the 2005 - but no surprises there. (15.5-16.) points

This wine has a remarkably pale appearance, and is starting to brown. A sweet, meaty, slightly mushroomy nose with later notes of coriander leaf (unusual!). A nice weight, balanced, a little richness, it has a good presence but isn't really that light on its feet. Interesting notes of rhubarb later on. A bit of vigour on the finish, which has a sweet, slightly grippy style. Good, and a pleasant surprise from this second growth which has had a reputation for under-performing in the past. 15 points

A lot of character here, which is good. A firm and nutty style, rather perfumed, almost to the level of being soapy. Rather chalky palate, all structure and no flesh. Rather bare tannins. This wine lacks flavour, character and concentration. (12-13) points

An intriguing nose, notes of smoky coffee and liquorice-laced fruit. Rather light-footed, but it has texture, although it is somewhat lacking through the hollow midpalate. A touch unfocused. Well coated structure, firm and ripe coating of tannins, and moderate acidity. Nicely composed, just lacking impact. (13.5-14.) points

Expressive, exuberant, still showing some oak, but alongside lots of fruit, full and spicy and a little complex too. Well rounded, broad, nicely textured, with a good backbone of ripe tannin. Very firm still, full and grippy finish. There is lots of potential here. And it is showing much better than the disorganised effort I tasted this time last year. 17+ points

An appealing nose, sweet, primary black fruits, not a hint of greenness here! Nice flesh on the palate, well poised, good acidic structure, full, a touch plump, quite vibrant, firm, with good potential. Yes, this is very good indeed. (16-17+) points

Sweet, sweet, sweet black fruit here on the nose. Rather a full style on the palate, ripe, a little creamy, rounded with a good texture. A bit of extract here, grippy, with decent acidity too. Nicely put together. Not at all compelling, but I think they have done well for the vintage. (14.5-15.) points

This is showing obvious evolution, a very claretty iron and blood nose which certainly appeals to me. Open, quite flashy and smoky still, but with those maturing elements alongside. It perhaps lacks a little concentration, and to be critical seems to have evolved in a very forward fashion, and there is a little jamminess to it. Nevertheless, the tannins are ripe and there is good acidity. Good. 16 points

A lovely nose, very open, lots of exotic fruit, quite fine. How did they manage that in this vintage? Ripe and creamy on the palate, stylish, full, with a dry grip beneath. Moderate acidity. Plump and really very flattering on the midpalate and finish, and although it doesn't have any great direction or finesse it will make very decent drinking for someone. 16 points

Quite an interesting nose here, showing notes of toffee and nuts, and some attractive fruit. An unusual style though. On the palate, plump although not very deep or plush, but nicely poised. Not a lot of structure to it though, a subdued layer of tannin behind it all. Lacks concentration of flavour, giving a rather hollow midpalate. A good effort though. (14-15) points

A really very appealing and sensuous nose of smoky jam, deeply characterful and attractive. It has a plump, rounded, full and creamy style on the palate, with a soft grip and decent acidity. It has a lovely presence. Rather firm beneath the welcoming flesh. Not the definition of the finest wines, but may make delightful drinking for many. 16.5+ points

Attractive, open, well-defined fruit. Appealing. Round, plump, a middleweight. Firm tannins, a touch austere, firm, extracted, good acidity too. This certainly has appeal. It is fresher and certainly superior to the white. (15-16) points

65% SB, 35% Sem. More vibrant than the 2006, which goes against the grain somewhat. Very fresh and vibrant. It has a touch more focus than the 2006 also, although still a warm, rounded style with underlying grip. Zippy acidity, but less lively than some of the other white Graves of this vintage. Nevertheless, still good, bordering on very good. 16.5+ points

65% SB, 35% Sem. Not so expressive on the nose here, rather muted, soft fruit, a touch of oak. Full style, rounded, not the vigour of some other white Graves, a touch flabby compared to others, full, some grip, but not so well focused. Nice but there are better choices in this vintage. This has a rather restrained nose, rather subdued. It certainly lacks impact on the palate. There is a ripe rounding off of tannins, nicely presented, but little in the way of texture or flesh. A rather bare, exposed wine which perhaps shows the difficulties of the vintage. Not a success for Chasse-Spleen it seems. (13-14) points

A deep, meaty, concentrated and evolved nose. Fresh, also a little soft, but underneath that a warm and velvety nature coating a core of tannin. Firm, certainly meaty as on the nose, full of potential. Not a great Cheval Blanc, nevertheless very good indeed. 17+ points

A lively, open, slightly meaty, deep and characterful nose, evolved, with a little nuance of green peppercorn and hints of iron. Rather detached on the palate, a little lean, and certainly gentle through the midpalate. Soft, integrated, aged. Drinking now. Interesting, developed and ready to go. But no better than good really. 16.5 points

A lovely nose here, a mix of fresh fruit and nutty oak. Quite flashy, still some oak showing, but not so buttery any longer, and there is a lovely style hidden beneath it, a fine grip and appropriate texture too. This is delicious, with a fine, well defined presence on the palate. It will make lovely drinking for many. 17+ points
