This blend of Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah has a bright and interesting nose, with sweet and slightly crystalline fruit. Good density to it as well. On the palate this has a very big and rich style, creamy with a good core of tannins with a rather chewy edge. The fruit has a plummy character, the acidity is on the low side and the texture considerable. Overall a fairly good style, with a little length. 16+ points

This wine is made by Álvaro de Castro, who is also responsible for the Pellada wine above. A mix of equal parts Touriga Nacional and Baga, this wine is certainly showing best of the two today; an intense, gamey-gravelly fruit nose kicks off, with sweetness and roasted garrigue behind it. Slightly chalky and minerally on the palate, but with lots of sweet and gamey fruit laid on top. Intense, quite precise in a way, concentrated, and full of ripe grip and structure. A good wine. 16+ points

This is 58% Merlot and 42% Cabernet Franc. Big smoky fruit, intense, aromatic, spicy and complex. Rich, dense, defined but creamy on the palate, although it also has a fine, stylish definition to it. Quite a firm substance, lots of texture, attractive weight in the mouth, very finely balanced, with lots of ripe substance. A very strong wine indeed, which has excellent potential for the future. Another pure Alvarinho wine from Anselmo Mendes, a well known consultant in the region. This wine has a great nose, with lots of pithy suggestion, alongside smoke and lemon cream. The palate is big, creamy, with soft acidity and notes of lemon pith and blossom. It is quite firm in character, with lemon meringue flavour, rather unfocused in the middle but tighter and more grippy at the end. A nice wine. 14.5+ points

A fairly dark and concentrated nose, with a wealth of dense, crunchy, crystalline black fruits. Lovely fruit expression on the palate, redolent of raspberries and cream. Broad and textured, supple, refined but fresh. An impressive wine dripping in style. Like its stablemate Clerc-Milon, this may warrant a higher score in future. (16.5-17.) points

2008 Château Ausone

April 2009
The overall yield at Ausone was just 27 hl/ha, and the grand vin is 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot. Pure, bright and smoky on the nose, perhaps just a touch of meaty richness, but certainly fabulously enticing. Intense, creamy, pure, concentrated and yet also perfumed on the palate, this has a beautifully svelte and creamy tannic structure. There is a fresh backbone of acidity, brilliant depth, broad and elegant. Delicious, layered, pure, this has finesse but also a lot of power in this vintage. Excellent potential. (18.5-19.) points

International varieties here, in this large-production blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The nose is very attractive, with some reserved and stony, fine and slightly crunchy, violet-tinged fruit. Supple and composed on the palate, very appealing with balance and density combined, and with the dark sweetness of the fruit countered by some appealing savoury elements. Nicely textured, with lots of grip at the finish, this is a wine of great potential I think. I like this a lot. 17.5+ points

Dark, dense plummy fruit here, with a sweet entry onto the palate. Suddenly it reveals firm zippy acidity in the midpalate, with the tannins less apparent. Intense, plum cream character, with lots of structure evident eventually. Concentrated, with a good, lively finish. (16-17+) points

An intense, fruit-rich nose, full of ripe, squashed plums, blackberries and rich cassis. A little prune, balsamic too. The palate is full, creamy, dense cherry, with a little soupiness to it. Lots of substance, lots of tannin too. A very extracted style. (14-15+) points

Dark, a little perfumed, and with charcoaly notes. An attractive palate, fresh and appealing, with fresh acids and firm ripe tannins. The fruit has nice aromatics, with a slightly chewy character. This isn't as well defined as some, nor does it have the most vigour. Still good though. (16-17+) points

An interesting nose, fresh and perfumed, although the fruit is dominated by notes of rhubarb. It is more appealing than it sounds! Supple and perhaps slightly oily on the palate, this is nicely textured, with sensible extract and backbone of tannins. Good extract and firm grip. Overall rather straightforward, but at least it is fresh. (15.5-16.) points

Some cream evident here on the nose, swirled with blackberries. Attractive and rich fruit on the palate, with some nice and firm tannins, this is nicely structured, balanced, and harmonious. Fresh, with elegant acidity. A lovely effort. (17-18+) points

Previously known as Belair, the Moueix family acquired full ownership of this property in 2008, and have renamed it in honour of Anne-Adèle Monange, Jean Moueix's wife (and thus Jean-Pierre's and Christian's mother and grandmother respectively). Rather muted fruit on the nose, a little hot perhaps, but there is a nice creaminess on entry. There is texture here, good balance, and a firm structure. Good acidity, slightly bitter substance, but there is certainly some good potential here. (16-17+) points

Dark and slightly plump fruit here, fresh although a little high-toned, sweet and herby. Evident oak too. Very rounded style to the palate, some polished substance, a touch of sweetness, but a little diffuse in the middle. Good substance here though, and some nice extract and tannin. (15-16+) points

This property is virtually opposite Angélus, and is under the direction of Hubert de Boüard de Laforest. This is 98% Merlot, with a 2% dash of Cabernet Franc. Smoky fruit, bright plum character. Fresh and creamy, a little flashy, but rather brawny too, with a firm core of acidity. Ripe tannins, very firm structure, quite extracted, but it has potential. (16-17+) points

A slightly crystalline character to the black and plummy fruits on the nose here, with a cokey-charcoaly edge. Rich on entry, dense and creamy, with substantial tannins. Ripe, smoothly polished, with lots of grip and extract here. On top, though, it is soft and creamy, underneath a good backbone and acidity. (16-17+) points

April 2009
This is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon and 44% Merlot, with an overall yield of 42 hl/ha. has warm and smoky fruit on the nose, and a lovely textural quality on entry. Firm in the midpalate, with slightly confected cherry fruit showing. The palate shows sweetness and texture, but underneath there is a slightly sooty grip to the tannins which perhaps contribute towards the slightly hard finish. Nice wine though. (15.5-16.) points

A wine from the Rolland collection. Bright, rather perfumed fruit on the nose. A very sweet texture on the palate, with a lot of extract underneath. Lots of tannic substance to it as well, and over all a perfumed, violet fruit. This has a very sweet substance to it and should drink well. (15.5-16.) points

A lovely nose, aromatic and fresh, and just a little toasty. Fresh on the palate too, with a fine, cool, purity of fruit. Stylish, minerally and textured, with fairly dense but crisp fruit, all well balanced. Gently supple, with lovely underlying structure. A real success here. (17-18+) points

April 2009
This is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with 35% new oak. It has a dense colour, with a very dense core. The nose is rather dark in character, spicy and organic, meaty, with notes of smoky, high-toast barrel notes still. There is good substance on the palate, which is rounded, polished and creamy, with nicely gentle acidity. Underneath, a good, grippy character. Good for a second wine. 16+ points

April 2009
The second wine of Issan. This is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, represents 36% of the harvest, and will see 35% new oak. The volume is up this year as 10 hectares of Issan vineyards with the Haut-Médoc appellation have been reclassified in October 2007 as AC Margaux, and the fruit has been included here. The nose is crisp, with black fruits, perfumed liquorice and a little sweetness. Lean and stony on the palate, although there is a sweet character to the fruit. Stylish in the middle, but harder on the finish. Fresh, well judged, with some substance and appealing notes of vanilla and raspberry. A good second wine. (15-16+) points

Crunchy, perfumed red fruits on the nose, with a little touch of chalk and blackberry too. A reserved texture and composition on the palate, with perfumed fruit like the nose, nice weight, and good background tannins. A nice style for a weaker vintage, with a lot of grip in the finish. Good. (15.5-16+) points

Vanilla and blackberry here on the nose. The palate has a gentle start, but is finely poised, with good acidity. Attractive in the middle, fleshy, slightly grippy, well rounded but with fairly firm tannins, especially at the finish. A touch hot here also. (15.5-16.) points
