From a half bottle. An appealing golden hue in the glass. The nose offers plenty of interest, which is certainly notable; there are some interesting organic tones, a touch of rôti, toffee but also fresh mint. The palate is cool and fresh although it quickly fattens up, developing a richer and slightly more complex character in the midpalate. The first flourish of real hope comes in the finish, as the wine releases a small but undeniable panoply of toffee and caramel character. This has undeniable metal. There is a little bitterness through the midpalate, however, and the wine perhaps lacks the concentration, acidity and also the precision of a truly great bottle, but all the same there is some pleasure to be had here. 15.5+ points

A great colour here, salmon pink, and a fine-moderate bead. Fairly dense creamy fruit on the nose, with a little vanilla alongside the fruit. Dense substance on the palate, firm slightly creamy mousse, with appealingly bitter, nettly red fruits. This has a very fresh presence, with really straight and clean acidity, leading through to a lean finish with a bitter grip, and lots of overt Pinot character at the end. This is good. A straw-gold colour. and a plentiful although fine bead here. The nose is surprisingly evolved, and very open, with plenty of nut and vanilla character expressed. Although it suggests soft, warm creaminess, the palate is appealing crisp, with an incisive mousse and fresh acid backbone. Over all it is very well defined, and it carries the sweetly styled fruit, which has a rather crystalline, dried character, very well indeed. Towards the finish it shows a richer, warmer style as was perhaps expected, and there is no shortage of full-on flavour. Flashy but also appealingly minerally. Bottled by Philizot et fils, Reuil, NM 489-003. 16.5 points

This also has a rich straw-gold hue, with a small bead. The nose is remarkably more advanced, however, showing plenty of complex and evolved aromas, with notes of nuts, polish, old furniture and oiled wood. The palate follows on in a similar vein, full and evolved as it is, well defined and yet with a fat and creamy richness. Freshness comes from the still lively mousse and good acids. This is very appealing, and is good for drinking now. Bottled by Michèle et Alain Mandois, Cerseuil, NM 494-001. 17 points

This Muscat has an appealing and spicy nose, with lychees, golden fruits and pears, spiced with very typical Muscat aromas of rose petal and orange peel. Appealing, fleshy, ripe, with a moderate substance and presence. Not fat or rich, quite nicely balanced, a little bitter, good tingly quality to the acidity although it is not that prominent. There is a little residual carbon dioxide which provides a refreshing lift. It has an appealing lemony quality at first, then an oily, midpalate richness. Light, bright, but with an appealing, spiced and somewhat grippy finish. Good. 16+ points

Renski Rizling is a synonym for Riesling proper, as opposed to Welschriesling or Laski Rizling. A clean and vibrant hue. Despite the variety in question, the nose is immediately more redolent of Alsatian Gewurztraminer, with rose petals and lychees predominating, although with a little hint of lime leaf in the background. The palate is fresh, fleshy, dry and quite full in style. There is a broad and firm acidity carrying it along, providing an appealing tingle at the front of the palate, and a good definition through to the attractively sour, slightly sappy finish. There is lots of appeal here, and just 10.5% alcohol. This would even do well in the cellar I think. 16.5+ points

This Sauvignon has a good pale golden hue, with a nose of ripe, golden fruits. Indeed it is rather autumnal in style, with notes of pears and apples, with a heady and ripe vein. The palate displays a full, ripe character with good acidity to balance the ripe, rounded, textured presence. There is some residual sugar here, providing some flesh to the palate. Overall though, this is fresh and substantial. Good. 16+ points

Sivi Pinot is Pinot Gris. A clear, well coloured wine here, with a very clean nose of pear and fruit salad. Quite fleshy on the palate, with some residual sugar in evidence, developing an almost oily seam through the midpalate. A nice little touch of bitterness behind this keeps it from sweet simplicity, and there is a good layer of sweet fruit, of yellow plums, honeydew melon and more. There is a little prickle of carbon dioxide still, which gives it a welcome, refreshing edge, especially as the acidity is moderately low. On the whole this is pretty good, taking into account its structure, and it makes for nice summer drinking. 15.5 points

Traminec translates as Gewurztraminer, although on tasting this wine no translation is required! It has a clean, shimmering, lemon-gold hue. The nose is fresh, aromatic and really rather perfumed, with aromas of lychees, lemon and herbs. It seems slightly fat and soapy too. Nevertheless there is a freshness to the palate, although it is rather oily, also rather low in acidity, but with a nice grip and appeal throughout. Perfumed, talky, with some residual sugar, fleshy, and indeed a little confected. Nice, but brighter acidity would help the balance. 14.5 points

This wine has a lovely nose of immediate appeal; the fruit is still very dominant here, perhaps not surprising at just eight years of age. The aromas are led by fresh raspberries, then followed by darker notes of plums and dried tobacco. Certainly nothing burnt or baked here. There is a meaty edge, suggesting there is much more to this wine than these very straightforward primary aromas, but it is all presented in a very fresh, pure and lifted fashion. As if to confirm this it shows lovely freshness on entry, and a very complete style through the midpalate. Here it holds a note of dark, slightly bitter chocolate, presented in a moderately lean and appealing texture together with a low level of rather well covered acidity as we might expect from the vintage reports. But, underneath it all there is a nice vein of austerity; this is really very attractive, easy to drink now, and yet certainly on the way up. I think I am going to enjoy my subsequent bottles of this wine. 17.5+ points

The nose here carries attractive aromas of crystalline yellow fruits, and my first impression is that it is a very straightforward, gentle wine without any complexity. The palate is well composed, well balanced, showing weight and acidity, but as the nose suggests there is no real development here. I find it also lacks a little concentration on the endpalate. Nevertheless it has a decent presence, and finishes well. Good. 15.5+ points

Another bottle drank while I wrote up these notes. A somewhat richer colour than I recall, with a sparse bead. Lovely nose, with notes of brioche, with lemony freshness too. Smoky and a little stony too. This carries through on the palate, firm and stony, fresh and defined, but with some welcome warmth in the background. It is just a touch austere, a characteristic which I enjoy very much; this will do brilliantly in the cellar, although I love it now. 18+ points

Lovely crisp and explosive fruit when the cork is pulled here, and in the glass plenty of plum-skin and peppered wood-spice character which has, for me, plenty of appeal. The palate offers a fresh although gently textured wine, with a substance that covers the ripe tannins that persist at the end very nicely. This has come around very nicely since my first assessment, and although it still shows some tannic grip it is very approachable now and has plenty to give. This is very good. 16.5 points

This has a beautiful hue, deeply coloured but with a mahogany maturity. After less than an hour in the decanter it is open and ready for business, and it gives a fine aroma of bloody meat, iron, perfumed violets, black olives, dry charcoal and more. It is certainly enticing, and the palate doesn't disappoint, with a medium-bodied and refined entry, plenty of acidic freshness backed up by a core of ripe tannins through the midpalate, rounding very nicely at the finish. The structure, which holds the wine well in the mouth and suggests this will do well in the cellar for some time yet, carries an array of meaty olive flavours. The end is clean and it leads to a slowly fading finish. This is excellent, and has plenty of potential for the future, yet it is still an absolute delight to drink now. 18+ points

From half bottles. This has a vibrant hue still, very attractive, dark but not advanced in its maturity. A complex nose is apparent, with little wisps of sweetly baked fruit, then burnt raspberry, later a violet perfume which is momentarily intoxicating. Behind it all, a seam of green peppercorn to which some - but not me - may have an adverse reaction. A lovely freshness follows on the palate which possesses a lean minerality behind some rounded fruit. It has good flesh and substance, and a good grip of charcoal-edged tannin. There is some acidity behind it all, beneath the leafy fruit and peppercorns again. A short finish. It drinks well, perhaps in a rather simple and foursquare fashion, but it has appeal. 16.5+ points

From half bottles. Nice colour, and an interesting nose; a slightly burnt character, a little edge of green, but with some nice slightly toffee-toned fruit. Mature, slightly treacly character. Savoury blackcurrant fruit and black olives as well. It has a lovely full character, full and complete, with good substance. It has lots of grip, is dry but textured, and possesses a tannic and grippy finish. There is a little length too. This is good. 16.5 points

I find attractive aromas on the nose here, which has a good presence of rounded fruit lifted by notes of liquorice and spicy complexity. It shows freshness and light rather than intensity. At the start it is light, and maintains a rather lean presence on the palate throughout, showing in quite a firm fashion without a great deal of rich concentration. Today it seems to be showing more structure than flavour or aroma, and it is a little less well composed in the mouth. I have enjoyed previous bottles of this wine more than this one. Nevertheless there are good qualities here which are evident on tasting. A good effort for a lesser vintage. 16.5+ points

A clean, pale, unremarkable hue with a persistent and streaming bead. The nose has a lovely freshness, rather minerally in places, but with a good, slightly nettly, slightly biscuity character. A very nice presence on entry, rather creamy in terms of textural quality, although this is counter balanced by a bitter streak which has some appeal, a lean grip. Firm and minerally underneath it, with nettles and pepper coming to dominate the finish. It isn't difficult to believe this is all Pinot. A refreshing aperitif. The first bottle was corked, so a replacement was quickly pulled. This hasn't faded much over the years; it still has an appealing presence of pigment, not the opaque quality of youth, but plenty of colour which has a matt, not mature hue. The nose has a deep, earthy character, with aromas of truffle oil and tree bark. A really attractive, very cool quality on the palate, showing texture, extract and grip all in moderation and balance, with quite some grip to the fore at the finish. Still showing lots of peppery raspberry and plum fruit. This has continued potential for the cellar and for the future. 17+ points

From a half bottle. A rich, mid-gold hue - I think this has deepened in colour a little since my last tasting. An interesting nose, rather high-toned, with toast, nuts and a maturing, somewhat roasted note. A good weight in the mouth, creamy and with good botrytis, plenty of depth and grip, and lots of texture. Appealing substance here, with an orange-tinged freshness. Rather low acidity, but good finish and a good length. A very impressive bottle for the vintage. 17 points

In the glass this has a clear, bright, golden appearance. On the nose it displays a very fresh style, with aromas of lemons and quince, and a lightly honeyed richness nicely countered by a crisp herbal tea character. The palate is simply lovely, showing quite pure definition on entry, with a gentle fatness through the midpalate. Above all it has purity and freshness. This is a well constructed wine, with good depth and a touch of grit towards the endpalate which provides some interest. And it has a good substance, and really quite some length too. Very good indeed. With quality and purity like this it is perhaps a little difficult to understand why this particular appellation has such a low profile. 17+ points

A lovely, aromatic nose here, showing some fine, iron-tinged fruit. This is evolving wonderfully. A delicious palate, showing a lovely texture and plenty of clean, sweet black fruit. Underneath there is a ripe structure, fresh acids too. This is not particularly rich, rather it is pretty and balanced, with appropriate substance behind it. An excellent effort for the vintage. Very good indeed. 17+ points
