A tawny red hue. Notes of custard powder on the nose. Loads of fresh fruit at first, fading to leave just some slightly stewed fruit notes. Good fruit, good balance. Still some tannins on the palate, with lots of acidity. 16.5 points

A rich, deep, mahogany red, by far the most richly coloured wine in this flight. Peppery black fruit on the nose. The palate has sweet, richly spicy and aromatic black fruit. Superb tannins and acidity. Tannins still very noticeable on the finish. 17.5+ points

The palate has a deep, vibrant purple hue, and the foam that forms as you pour has a similar intensity of colour. Aromas of fat, ripe blueberries and blackcurrants fill the nose, with some black pepper and charcoal nuances. The palate has a persistent mousse, a good backbone of acidity, and bags of berry fruit. A medium bodied mouthfeel and fairly elegant texture. Most of all, though, it's great fun. 16 points

A gorgeous, glossy purple hue. The nose, although initially closed, opens out with time. It is dominated by a combination of blueberry and blackcurrant fruit, with a load of toasty French oak. Good texture on the palate, with firm tannins, good acidity and bags of fruit. There are some interesting sweet, smoky notes. A very international style, but very good with it. 16.5 points

Creamy, yeasty and rich on the nose. Some good complexities on the palate, freshly baked biscuits and fresh warm bread, with obvious leesy notes. Soft, balancing acidity. A delightful wine, and good quality for a poor vintage. For early drinking whilst you are waiting for the 1990 to come around. 17.5 points

A tasting of the NV cuvée on the market at the time; possibly the same wine as above. A creamy, yeasty nose. A soft mousse which doesn't fade, with a good balance of fruit and lemony acidity. 16.5 points

Purchased Summer 2000; six months further bottle age. Quite a rich colour, and a fine bead. Aromas of Bramley Apples fill the room on popping the cork. In the glass it has a rich, heady, leesy nose, with a touch of lemon curd. Likewise leesy and lemony on the palate, with a soft but persistent mousse which has a creamy edge. Balanced, fresh acidity. Good finish. 15.5+ points

From the Trinders Vineyard. An elegant yet fruit-laden nose. On the palate, richly textured and smoky berry fruit is backed by firm, not yet integrated tannins. Needs some time to come together, but I don't think the fruit here will have any problems while the tannins harmonise. Will be superb in a few years, and excellent value. 17+ points

Some complex aromas here, a pleasant smoky note mixed with lemons, tropical fruit and a good dollop of oak. Lovely acidity on the palate, with a lemony quality as the nose would suggest. More tropical fruit, but not overt or blowsy, and that smoky element again. Delicious weight and texture. The best Australian Chardonnay that I tasted at the Australian Wine Bureau, and one of the best I can recall. 16.5 points

A deliciously clean and fresh nose, with a good intensity of aroma. On the palate there is a lovely Sauvignon streak of acidity, married with a weight derived from the Semillon. Lovely fruit. Palate remains clean right through to the finish. I'm not normally a fan of Sauvignon based wines from warm regions (Margaret River is 'cool climate', but only relatively speaking), but this one I like. 16 points

A nose laden with Shiraz black fruit and black pepper. Another palate, like the Cabernet Merlot, with a strong presence of tannin. Packed with delightful fruit, with some spice and pepper. Big, high alcohol wine, with sufficient acidity for aging. Another wine that will be stunning. 17+ points

A small amount of light sediment on decanting. A rich, red-purple hue, fading to an orange-pink rim, with no tawniness at all. The nose initially has smouldering charcoal and then grilled Cumberland sausages, but after five minutes in the glass gives off a blast of classic, Northern Rhone rubber. The nose then really closes up, leaving just rich, smoky fruit and a touch of that rubber. On the palate, sweet, spicy black fruit sits with black pepper and smoke, with fine, integrating tannins and balanced acidity. A rich mouthfeel. Finishes with a slightly hot, spicy note. Good length. Although ready for drinking, this wine is just reaching peak and will last years yet. 17 points

The wine had a lovely red-black hue in the decanter, with just some bricking at the rim. A typical Northern Rhône nose of industrial rubber and sweet, black fruit. The most wonderful texture on the palate, with smooth, elegant and integrated tannins, ripe black fruits, green peppercorns and nicely integrated oak. A fine balance and pleasing length. Delightful, and not too overpowering for a roasted turkey. 17 points

Drunk over the course of two days, the nose was initially dominated by pencil lead and cedar aromas, despite the encépagement being predominately Merlot. By the following day the restrained, black fruit had opened out to give rich blackcurrant aromas, with some toasted oak. The greenness had disappeared from the palate, leaving a medium bodied, fruity wine with well balance tannins and acidity. Good, easy drinking Claret. 15 points
