Beginning to show signs of age, with a good tawny rim. This should have given a clue to the identity of this wine. On the nose, initially it has woody fruit, with some spice, floral notes, and hints of toffee and mint. It opens out in the glass, eventually giving off rich blackcurrant fruit aromas. The texture is creamy (another clue), with balanced acidity and blackcurrant fruit. I felt the tannins were green and a touch unpleasant. They become quite evident on the finish. 16 points

Deep inky purple, and a richly fruited, jammy, blackcurrant nose. On the palate it has more big, jammy fruit, and is somewhat one-dimensional, with little of the complexity that you might expect from a reserve wine. Low acidity makes it soft and quaffable, but in truth it borders on unbalanced. 13.5 points

Pale in colour, giving no suggestion of the richness that is to follow. The nose has aromas of peaches and pears, with tropical pineapple notes. Such is the intensity and sweetness of the aromas that hard-boiled fruit drops come to mind. Medium weight on the palate, with good balance. It is packed with sweet yet slightly mineral pineapple fruit, with a touch of lemon curd. More slate and mineral nuances on the finish. Deliciously easy to drink. 16.5 points

Initially blackberry fruit, with a whiff of volatile acidity, the nose soon settles and opens in the glass to reveal raspberry fruit with creamy oak and a touch of spice. Medium bodied palate, good fruit, tannins really softened up, just that slightly obtrusive acidity again. A disjointed, warming sensation from the alcohol on the finish suggests this is on the way downhill. Drink up. 14 points

Moderate colour. Nose of red berry fruits and vanillin oak. It seems less complex than the previous vintage. After 48 hours it has become quite rich on the nose, but has some volatile, polished oak still. Nicely textured palate with rich berry fruits. There is a sweet, raspberry note on the finish, and prominent acidity. Pleasant, although not a repeat buy like the 1991. 14.5 points

A deep colour. Good strong fruit on the nose, but difficult to assess from this ridiculously small tasting sample (served in some sort of medicine thimble). Firm tannins and full bodied, with fruit and balance. Worth investigating further. 15? points

Again a dark, youthful looking wine. The nose is obviously classic Pauillac - restrained blackcurrant fruit with a firm lick of pencil lead. The palate is stacked with tannins, but has plentiful fruit and is richly textured. Again, the tannins are prominent on the finish. Good length. 17 points

Little sign of any age from this very dark purple wine. A delicious nose of sweet, smoky cassis fruit, with layers of liquorice and cream. Quite big and luscious on the forepalate, with less tannins than the other wines in this flight. Good fruit, with spice and creamy oak. Some notes of soot and tar, but otherwise a soft, generous, layered palate. Good length too. 17.5 points

Paler than the Royal Tokaji Blue Label. Lovely nose though - lemon and orange marmalade and elegant botrytis. The palate has good balance, with a rich texture that never cloys thanks to good acidity. More marmalade and botrytis notes, and a rich finish. Very good length. Lacks complexity, but makes up for this with lovely structure. 16.5 points

A good depth of colour suggests this wine may have something to offer, despite its lowly village status. Good blackberry and blackcurrant leaf fruit on the nose, with some oak. The palate is lovely - rich and flavoursome, it has ripe blackberry fruit with firm background tannins and balanced acidity. The texture is full and mouth filling. This wine isn't complex, but it is tasty and delicious. 15 points

In the glass it has a fairly intense golden hue. A nose of pineapples, botrytis and marmalade. Very smoky, perhaps reflecting use of oak. The palate has more tropical fruit, hazelnuts, angelica and apples. Rich, sweet and balanced. A delicious length. 18.5 points

Quite restrained on the nose at first, but there is good but subtle complexity if you look for it. Lean lemon and grapefruit, a touch mineral and stony. Faint nuances of toffee and melon. On the palate what impresses most is the savoury, balanced structure. A fleshy white fruit texture, medium body, with lemon and grapefruit citrus acidity. A good, fleshy length. Good value and easy drinking. 15.5 points

This wine really holds your attention, with nice toasty oak on the nose, together with liquorice, plums, berry fruits, pepper and spice. The palate has a lovely texture, but most importantly it is beautifully balanced. Good tannic backbone, spot-on acidity and bags of fruit with some well integrated oak. A very clean finish. Lovely stuff. 16.5 points

A good mahogany red colour. Rich yet gravelly red fruit gives the game away - this has to be the Montrose. Firm but elegant tannins on the palate, with finely balanced acidity. Lovely stuff. 17.5+ points

Plenty of elegant fruit on the nose. The palate has sweet, rich, caramel fruit, with tannins representative of the vintage. A touch leaner and harder than the Pavie 1989 - but that goes with the vintage. A sweet, caramel finish. Approachable now but will keep for a few years yet. 17.5 points

A fine but barely noticeable bead in this pale, golden wine. Rich, white fruit aromas dominate, with a subtle twist of coconut. The mousse reflects the bead with no more than a soft, prickling sensation, but it builds to a creamy texture on the palate. Delicious balance. More rich, white fruit, and on the endpalate the development of some toasty, nutty complexities, which persist through the finish. I expected more complexity, although this may come with further maturation in the bottle. 17.5+ points

Tasted twice over the past month, with consistent notes. A pale yellow colour, with a fruity, zesty nose very suggestive of Sauvignon Blanc with a hint of something, such as Muscadelle or Semillon. Fruit laden palate, with good bright acidity. Pleasant quaffing stuff. 14.5 points

A deep amber and peach colour. The nose carries rich honeyed raisins and almonds, notes of botrytis and a marked flor characteristic. The palate has an unctuous consistency, but does have balancing acidity, together with more luscious honey and raisins. I can't help feeling, however, that it tastes a little unclean, or that there is an old, wet wood note to it. It's interesting, but hardly endearing. 13.5 points

A dark, purple black. Massive fruit on the nose. Tannic palate, but stacked to the ceiling with rich fruit. A rich, sumptuous, lovely wine. Another great effort from this little-publicised (in the UK at least) chateau. 17+ points

This wine has some tawniness to it. It is smoky and leafy on the nose, with good blackcurrant fruit. It smells hard, tannic and restrained. On the palate this is confirmed, still quite hard, but there is some rich fruit present. Gravelly, sooty, tarry notes. Tannic finish. 16.5 points

A rich, burnished golden colour. The nose, when the wine is held still, gives off gentle aromas of orange blossom, with more powerful orange peel, thick cut orange marmalade, honey and toast. A little aeration produces rich, oatmealy notes of bottle maturation. The palate has more honey on toast and a balanced mouthfeel, with positively tingling acidity towards the finish. Tremendous length. Delightful stuff, just coming into its drinking window. A keeper, it should perform well for another 15-20 years. 17+ points

This is a youthful and delicious looking glossy red-black wine. The nose is initially all blueberries and blackberries, but it soon closes down leaving just toasty oak and some hard sooty aromas suggestive of tannins. The palate doesn't disappoint - lots of fruit, nicely applied oak, but loads of hard, sooty tannins. Despite this it is very drinkable now, but will doubtless be better in a year or two if properly cellared. 16 points

A rich, deep golden wine. It initially gives off an aroma of crab apple, but this disappears, leaving nuts, wheat, oatmeal and just the faintest touch of butterscotch. The palate carries similar flavours, with fresh, almost racy acidity, and a firm body. Being critical, it's a good drink, but I can't help feeling it lacks focus. It has the richness I enjoy in white Burgundy, but lacks the elegance of other examples, although this can be a criticism laid against all Chassagne-Montrachet, not just Verget's. Firm finish. 15 points
