A youthful red-purple wine, with a great density of colour. An abundance of rich, dark, spice and chocolate-tinged summer fruits on the nose, with some oak as well. Rounded, medium bodied, packed with dry, jammy fruit. Fresh acidity and some drying tannins on the finish lend a sense of balance. An obvious yet enjoyable style. 16.5+ points

This wine has a pale, golden-yellow hue in the glass. The nose is delightful, full of ripe melon, peach, and pear fruit, and is loaded with minerals. There is also a sense of a fat, rich, quality, which certainly comes through on the palate also. Very dry, but with a fat, rich and slightly oily texture, and a flavour profile of bitter minerals with some stone fruit. Notes of quinine on the finish. Very approachable now, but surely set for future development. Drink or hold for five years at least. 18+ points

Vibrant garnet red with moderate intensity of hue. Quite a lot of volatile acidity on the nose, with roasting meat, and a metallic, sticking plaster element suggestive of Brett. With time in the glass an aroma of dark cherry fruits comes to dominate. Medium bodied on the palate, pleasantly textured, sweet and spicy cherry fruit, and quite some tannin on the finish. Correct balance otherwise. There is a thin vein of volatile acidity running through the palate. A raw, backward wine which needs time in the cellar to gain some harmony, but which will be great. 17.5+ points

Purchased Spring 2002; nine months further bottle age. Slow to open on the nose, initially giving just some lemony white fruits and a few autolytic notes. With time there is more subtle coffee and toffee aromas. Similar nuances on the palate, but still surprisingly tight and with good acidity. Having already spent almost a year in the cellar, this wine is in need of more time. Who says NV cuvées are sold ready to drink? 16+ points

A deep garnet red colour with a residual touch of purple. Lovely nose, which although dumb at first evolves over several hours to reveal aromas of violets, charcoal and dense black fruits. Rich texture on entry. Through the endpalate the tannins and acidity sit with the plentiful fruit, adding a note of austerity but overall it has balance. Quite elegant, and delicious. Needs two years in the cellar. 17.5+ points

This wine shows some maturity, with light bricking of an otherwise garnet red hue. Roasted vegetable aromas, but still some red fruits in the background, also smoky liquorice. It has a fairly firm, rounded texture, and plenty of acidity. Deliciously sweet, roasted plum fruit, with a soft tannic backbone. Perhaps a little disjointed towards the finish. Drink up. 15.5 points

The most advanced, red-brown colour of the tasting. A hard, burnt character to the nose, with dirty iodine and stewed broccoli nuances. The palate makes a similar impression, yet there is a good texture, drying tannins, and maturing fruit. This seems like an attempt at over-extraction, trying to make a big wine from a weaker vintage. A disappointment. 12 points

A pale golden yellow wine, less intense than the most recent vintage of this which I have tried, which was the 1994! Vanilla, white fruits and pineapple on the nose. It achieves a good balance on the palate, with a rich, sweet texture tempered by appropriate acidity. Fresh, lemony fruit with a tropical edge. Excellent value for money. 16 points

A deep colour, more earthy in appearance than the subsequent wine. Somewhat hot and alcoholic on the nose, with some stalky elements. Fat, rounded texture on the palate, with sweet molasses, and earthy, vegetal complexity which calls to mind the lighter 1991 vintage. There's still a pile of unintegrated tannins and alcohol. I don't know if this has the substance to go the distance. From a tasting of two 1997 Ports. 16 points

Quite a deep, golden colour. An interesting array of aromas on the nose - mixed ground nuts, oatmeal and smoky notes from the oak. Treacle sponge character, and also some furniture polish notes of volatile acidity. Fairly rich on entry, although very dry, and with some grip through the midpalate. Nutty, savoury and flavoursome. Marred by some slightly bitter acid on the finish. Perhaps suffering from mild cork taint, although not to the detriment of the nose. A second bottle was better - less open on the nose, less giving on the palate, but tauter, finer, more balanced, and with greater potential for the cellar. 16.5 points

A deep, purple-black wine. A delightful, rich nose, which hides nothing - aromas of blackberries on toast, liquorice and charcoal - there's obvious oak influence here. The palate is succulent and fleshy, but has the necessary structure. Firm yet ripe and supple tannins, and correct acidity. Absolutely packed with extract and flavour. A short display of tannins on the finish - this wine will cellar for up to five years. This is a strong contender for wine bargain of the year. 16.5 points

This has a decent colour, showing some evidence of maturity. The nose doesn't offer much in the way of fruit, although there is a metallic aroma, and a low level of sulphur. On the palate it has moderate weight, but prominent acidity - showing particularly on the finish. Seems somewhat green - under ripe fruit? A displeasing, disjointed finish. 12 points

Considerable maturity of colour here. There is an elegant purity of fruit on the nose at first, which is a touch smoky. The palate has a slightly creamy texture, but is unbalanced. A low level of tannins is appropriate for the vintage, but there is prominent, incongruous acidity. No length. This wine may come around with time in the cellar - or it may fall apart. 13.5 points

Plenty of colour, with just a tinge of brick red maturity. Initially fairly hard and charmless, it opens out in the glass, giving aromas of roasted dark fruits, minerals and violets, and even a touch of toffee still. Remains quite hard on the palate, with some firm, stony fruit, but very appealing nevertheless. Still has some hard tannins in the finish. Correct acidity. Should continue to improve over the next couple of years at least. 16.5 points

A richly coloured, vibrant, garnet red hue. There is lovely fruit on the nose, full of dark cherries, blackberries, plums and red fruits. Medium bodied on the palate, and nicely textured although not luscious. Behind this approachable exterior there is a firm extract, and typical acidity. Rounded cherry fruit with a layer of oak, and a savoury twist on the finish. Easy drinking and good value. 15.5 points

Another advanced, mature colour. An initially exciting nose, with exotic Asian spices, black beans and sweet roasted plums - but these aromas quickly dissipate, leaving something fairly dull. Full and rounded texture on the palate, with some fruit. Spicy tannins and low acidity. Good length. One of the better wines of the tasting. 14 points

An attractive colour here, garnet-red. No real evidence of age, although it has lost the purple vibrancy of youth. The nose has some good attributes - a modicum of fruit and a cedary element, but also an unusual sweaty, sappy, pine needle character. There's good weight on the palate, with some fruit apparent on entry. Nevertheless it is spoiled by a hard, charmless texture and a bitter flavour. Acidity is on the low side, and there are appropriate tannins. 13.5 points

A dark, mature colour. On the nose this wine is inky, dull, fairly closed. On the palate it has a rounded texture, with somewhat sweet fruit, and good balance. Fresh, cleansing acidity. Some tannins and a little length. After tasting the remaining wines it becomes apparent that this is one of the better wines of the tasting. 15.5 points

Purchased in 1999. A lovely red, golden-amber colour. There's plenty of complexity on the nose, with caramel, roasted vegetables, raisins, and more than a hint of volatile acidity. Good weight, toffee and fig flavours, and sharply fresh acidity. Nicely balanced, almost elegant. Sweet, aromatic, alcoholic length. 16 points

Still a good colour, not showing much age, but has certainly dulled since last tasted a year ago. The nose has good solid fruit, but the complex and attractive aromatics I have previously noted have gone. Firm texture on the palate, with some fruit, still a trace of tannin and correct acidity. Overall seems quite closed. This was a good wine which I can only hope will come back of its shell in the next year or so - otherwise I will regret not drinking it all in 2001. 16+? points

Good depth of colour, cut through with a tinge of maturity. Sweet, roasted blackcurrant and blackberry fruit on the nose, with a slightly confected cough-candy edge, although this was not sufficient to cause any distraction. Elegant on entry, balanced and very fluid, although this leads into some dilution evident on the midpalate. It fattens up in the glass though, and develops a firm, appealing texture. Lovely extract, sweet yet spicy fruit, and correct acidity. Good length. This has really moved on from when I last tasted it in 2000, when it was just a bundle of summer fruits and toasty oak. Although there is a touch of tannin in the finish, I don't think this will make any major improvements. Drink up over the next year or two. 16 points

Deep red-purple - not the vibrancy of youth, but no real maturity either. An impressive nose - packed with dark, sweet and smoky black fruits, currants and plums. Dense, tarry notes, but with elegant floral elements also. Sweet, rounded texture on the palate, but this sweet fruit is underpinned by a firm, tannic structure. Unbelievably there are still some notes of youth - coffee grounds for instance - alongside the intense, brawny fruit. Correct acidity for the style, which is opulent and creamy. Delicious now, but will improve for three to five years at least. 17+ points
