Mature colour. Menthol and spice, meaty-iron nose. Full, meaty palate with some spicy tannins and firm acidity. Round, fleshy texture. Great purity of mature flavour. Lovely drinking now, certainly ready, but there is still some structure and the necessary texture and acid to further improve in the cellar. Drink now and over the next ten years. 16.5 points

Some maturity on the colour. Meaty and menthol again, a little sooty, with some dark black fruits. Not as giving on the nose as the other two wines here. A full, moderately fleshy palate, underpinned by very firm, drying tannins and concentrated fruit. Develops a rich svelteness with time, with rose-petal and tar nuances. Certainly has some charm so it's a good result for this vintage. 16.5+ points

Youthful colour. Obvious and attractive youth on the nose, brimming over with coffee, tarry treacle toffee and blackcurrant aromas. Full palate, with coffee notes again, and firm, fresh acidity. Intense and concentrated, with pure black fruits and ripe, firm tannins. Voluptuous and seductive. Delicious, with lovely potential. A tremendous effort for this vintage. Needs five years but should be beautiful when mature. 17.5+ points

Lovely colour, fairly dense, paling only at the most extreme rim. A chocolate-mushroom nose, with undercurrents of strawberry and raspberry fruit, with a thin sheen of oak. On the palate it impresses with quite a silky texture and lovely concentration. Firm, ripe tannins and acidity to match. This really shows the quality of the vintage. Lovely. 17+ points

Still a youthful hue here. Bright black cherry fruit aromas, with notes of truffle and chocolate mushroom (!) on the nose - quite lovely. Medium bodied palate, still with primary fruit, and still a lick of tannin too. Not quite the silky texture one desires, but certainly attractive, with fresh acidity and a full, mushroomy finish. Should drink well over the next five years. Very good. 16+ points

A good nose, showing salty cashew nut and lemon oil notes. Expressive and mature. Good presence on the palate, mouth-filling, oiled white fruits with a little honey. Grippy undertow and a savoury finish. Rich, pleasing rather than focused or fine. But a very good village wine from a lesser regarded commune. 16.5 points

A hint of richness to the colour. Muted at first, but opening out to reveal firm aromas of nut oil, biscuit and toast. Full, grippy, balanced, with fresh acidity quickly following up the initial impression of rounded, appealing, slightly oily texture. Then the structure really starts to bite. This is good, masculine stuff, with ample character. Dry, wood tannin-influenced finish with plenty of savoury interest. Great food wine. 16.5+ points

Mid gold hue. Fine central bead, with fatter bubbles at the rim. Clean, citrusy nose at first, showing some toastiness and a little smokiness with time in the glass. Youthful palate, vivacious with fresh, firm acidity. No great complexity and still a sheen of polished oak evident. Strikes me as more promising than the 92, but inferior to the 95 and obviously the 96. Will improve over three to four years. 16+ points

Purchased Spring 2002; approaching three years further cellar age. Pale hue. Very fine bead indeed. Evolved nose, with coffee and caramel, honey and coconut macaroons. Fresh, with a very gentle, sparkling, pétillant mousse. Quite light, no great impact or body, but with some nice bitter coffee notes. Plenty of interest here. Just gone over peak I think, and my last bottle (I think). 15.5 points

HHaving missed out on this wine at a dinner with the Marchesi di Gresy winemaker, this was delivered to my home by the unusual technique of throwing it over the garden fence. Surprisingly, the bottle survived. Passito of course refers to the drying of the grapes prior to fermentation. Quite a rich, golden colour. It has a delightfully aromatic, musky, wood-spice, pineapple nose. Full, weighty, yet fresh with nicely balanced acidity on entry. And through the midpalate it becomes a little more expansive, more full, but maintaining brilliant freshness too. It has a rich, grapey sweetness characteristic of this variety, and considerable length following a clean finish. This is very good indeed. 17.5 points

Mid-gold hue. Honey, oatmeal, nutty-mineral nose with a touch of white pepper. Full palate, structured, nuts and cream flavours. Vinous, balanced, with a firm, nutty finish and warm, creamy length. This is a good, grippy style which although approachable now still has some maturing to do before it gets to the stage where I really appreciate white Burgundy. 16.5+ points

Rich, deep, orange-golden hue. At first rather sweet and candied, but it develops intense, characteristic orange-honey-apricot notes of botrytis. Fresh, with lovely rot on entry. Rich, a little oily, nicely balanced, grippy, with powerful savoury notes. Just needs time in the glass to open out. Good. 16 points

A moderately deep, yellow-golden hue. Typical Chenin on the nose, full of smoky honeycomb and straw character, with hints of white pepper too. Full, not quite creamy texture on the palate, which is fresh and appealing, although it has somewhat low acidity. But I suppose even the greatest examples of this appellation lack the verve and focus of good Vouvray. Nevertheless, there's a concentration and depth of botrytis-influenced flavour and texture which is worthwhile. Some early complexity, and good length. Drink now and over the next ten years. Very good. 16.5 points

A twintop cork. Pale hue reflecting the cool climate, even in this excellent vintage. Clean nose, although somewhat lean as well, giving little in the way of notable aroma; just a slightly minerally, slightly grapey, watery-pure character. Less aesthetically challenged types might liken it to the dew of a spring meadow. A palate of purity, tingly acidity and decent texture. Actually shows a little weight through the midpalate. Firm, citrussy finish. I expected more from this vintage though. 15 points

Deep, earthy, mature hue. Meaty, earthy, caramel and treacle, and burnt wood on the nose, with ripe macerated fruit. Pure and delightful, even seductive nose. Full, stylish palate. Very elegant, although not a voluptuous feel. Some really firm tannins behind the body, but it still has a warm ripe feel and good balance. I like it. Should drink well for a few years yet. 17 points

Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, from five Grand Cru villages. A very fresh style, with some honeycomb notes on the nose. Lovely palate, showing freshness combined with body. Good firm mousse. Great persistence. This is very good, and deserves 3-5 years in the cellar. 16.5+ points

New release. A brut non-vintage blend, although different to that marketed as Fleur de Champagne; this has 40% C and 60% PN, again sourced from the main Champagne regions. Fancy bottle - clearly an 'upmarket' position. Fresh nose, with notes of iodine. Full, plenty of unusual salty iodine notes here too. Subtle flavour otherwise. Soft mousse, but plenty of acidity. Drink now. Good. 15.5 points

76% C, 24% PN for this vintage, from the Côte des Blancs, Vallée de la Marne and Montagne de Reims. Lovely, enticing nose, with maturing coffee. This finesse is carried through onto the palate, which has great balance, with a soft, rounded, creamy structure. Some nice concentration here. Coffee-biscuit notes, reflecting the dominant Chardonnay portion. This has excellent style now, but will continue to improve. Drinking now. 17+ points

80% C, 20% PN from the Côte des Blancs, Vallée de la Marne and Montagne de Reims. A blend of six Grands Crus, including Mesnil sur Oger and Cramant, with Premier Cru Vertus. Good hue. Brilliant, fresh nose, very much Chardonnay in style. Lovely, very dry palate, with great body and texture. I like this very much - it would be great with food. 17 points

A fascinating wine; 100% Pinot Meslier, sourced from Venteuil in the Vallée de la Marne. It sees some oak. Very unusual nose, difficult to equate with what I expect from Champagne, and difficult to describe too. Quite citrus in character, grapefruit particularly, with a suggestion of roasted white fruits. Good mousse. Huge acidity, carrying great freshness, but also huge flavour. The oak is in evidence as well. It certainly has uniqueness value. 16.5+ points
