Very forward on the nose, which is open and expressive, with aromas of red cherry skins and cherry liqueur richness. The palate is fabulously rich and creamy, dense, pure and integrated. There is a fine concentration of flavour, with bitter cherry skins, milk chocolate and more. A lot of character here, and a lot of grip on the finish. Very good indeed, and with excellent potential. 18+ points

A very dense, rich hue on inspection. There is a lot of fruit here, with a roasted herb character. This is followed by lovely style on the palate; there is dense flavour, creamy fruit, intensity and yet also freshness and definition. Very appealing, as previous vintages have been, and also offering decent value for money. 16.5 points

An old favourite; I really adored the 1993 vintage. The aromas on the nose are intense and characterful, showing bright yet roasted fruit, with scents of cherry and earth. Great depth and fruit complexity here. Although it has a little roasted note the heat of the vintage is not overly transparent; there are no baked elements as yet. And there is a lot of acidity too, flavours of pickling spices, and overall a great composition. Lovely potential for the cellar here. 18+ points

A nice, deep hue here. Less open on the nose than the 2007 Valpolicella, tasted alongside, there are dark fruits here, with a subtle, cola-caramel tinged character. The palate shows a more minerally character than is found on the nose, and it has a rich and creamy impact. This has a good blending of fruit, grip and acidity. That cola element reappears on the finish. Overall though, I think this has appeal. 16 points

Bottled under Stelvin, a newly permitted closure for this DOC; previously this wine would have been Valpolicella Classico, but at the time screwcap closures are still not permitted by the Classico DOC. This has a bright, vivacious hue, as it should. It is simple, but has an attractively forthright herbal-cherry nose. Nicely styled on the palate, rounded and well integrated, with good pepper and grip. An enjoyable style, and impressive for a straight Valpolicella. 15 points

Not a lot of depth to the colour here, and even some early maturity at the rim. This appearance is, I think, of some concern in a wine this young. The nose bears some unusual characteristics, aromas reminiscent of preserved meats, salami laced with peppercorns. The palate is lean, with a very sharp bite and yet ripe, swirling tannins. An unusual fruit profile completes the picture, This wine seems all over the place at present and is perhaps rather advanced in its development. Worrying. 12 points

A golden hue, with just a tinge of green, and a gently sweet nose with notes of honey and nice botrytis. Fresh, it has a delicately plump texture, with quince flavour and a touch of oranges, and there is certainly an attractive sweetness. There is some appeal here, in texture at least. A decent wine. 15.5 points

Lovely aromatics on the nose here, much more lifted and perfumed than the 2003, showing soft, white fruits and a fresh minerality. Light, bright and vivacious on the palate, and perhaps there is not the depth and texture that you might hope for. A nice, clean style, with decent acidity, but it lacks impact. It needs time to show its best. 15+ points

One of the few wines that I have subsequently acquired in quantity, which I first tasted in an impressive mini-vertical, also taking in the 1999, 2000 and 2001 - followed by the same vintages of Vieux Télégraphe. It was stunning then, and on this tasting it remains so. It has only a moderately deep, gently maturing colour. The nose does have some baked fruit elements to it, which I commented on when I last tasted this wine, but unlike some other wines in this tasting it is not the predominant feature. There is a twiggy, Grenache-fruit element to it, as well as roasted meats, and exotic notes of cloves and curry spices. The palate carries richness, but it also carries excellent acidity, and a slightly more backward feel than many of its peers. It has a lovely broad presence in the mouth though, and although it shows tannic grip and definition it also has a complete although very masculine feel to it. Delicious wine with fabulous potential for the future; I expect this will drink well for well over a decade yet, if not for two. 19+ points

A second chance to taste this wine. The 2001 vintage has an attractive colour, and on the nose there is rather restrained fruit, and I suspect this is perhaps closing down a little today. Softly composed on the palate, with a nice tannic structure. This has good grip and overall an attractive style. With a little time it will make very good drinking. 16+ points

There is some appealing fruit here, plump in style. On the palate it displays a rather straight tannic core, which is surrounded by a somewhat unfocused flesh. Underneath it all, lots of raw, tannic grip. This has good structure, with firm acids. It is rather unknit and awkward at present, but I suspect with integration in the cellar it will be much improved. 16+ points

Good fruit character here, complex spicy plum and brambles. Lots of interest. Some richness on the palate, lots of fruit and texture, with rather nice acidity and balance through the midpalate. Nicely rounded and defined, through to the finish. Very good indeed. 17.5+ points

A very dense hue to this wine on inspection. The nose has some very primary although rich Merlot character, rich plums and spiced fruitcake. It has a very attractive character on the palate, a good grip with ripe, well-coated tannin. There is a good balance of acidity too. It seems better integrated than my previous tasting in October 2007, and has a more appealing composition. Very good indeed. 17+ points

This has a very dark hue, and is showing dense fruit and oak on the nose. Attractive, black fruit and raspberry character. On the palate the flavours are well defined, with grip and acid nicely covered by a soft texture. Lots of structure showing towards the end of the palate, very firm, with a lot of residual tannin lingering on the finish. Rather hard here, showing lots of extract, overall rather on the edge for me. Nevertheless it is not totally out of balance, and may come very good with time in the cellar. 17+ points

This is very different to the 2004, tasted alongside. here there is an exuberant fruit nose, showing lots of sweet berry character. The palate flatters with a wealth of texture, but then quickly reveals a large amount of extract too. Where most 2005s cover the tannins very nicely, this struggles slightly. Lots of huge, chewy tannins persisting through to the finish. I feel this is close to having been pushed too far in terms of extraction. It will be difficult to predict how this one will fare in the cellar. 16.5+? points

It is strange to think that it has been a couple of years since I took another from this case, as it seems much more recent than that to me. There is a lovely creaminess on the nose now, if that is possible, with notes of white pepper and some bright and evolving aromatics. A fine depth has evolved on the palate, a slightly oily, resinous quality coming through, and a lovely broad texture. Bright yet fleshy, still with a firm structure and an acid backbone. Just a touch of honeycomb and caramel on the finish. This is developing very nicely, although it will be a few more years yet before it peaks. A higher score - it looks as though my first impressions were the closest! 17+ points

A good colour, and an appealing nose, showing perhaps slightly lean liquorice fruit, with a blackcurrant and blackberry character. It has a fresh aspect that I admire, and depth too. A nice style on the palate, lean and reserved, with a firm core of fruit, tinged with that liquorice again. A nice style, carrying a light and fresh character, with complex notes of spiced orange and a good savoury finish. Vivacious rather than rich. 16 points

This has a much richer nose than the 2004, tasted alongside. It has a denser, riper character, and is showing good creamy fruit. There are notes of smoke and liquorice. The palate has a nice, direct, well-formed style, quite firm, with some notes of pepper and spice. Then there is a wonderful flourish of flavour on the finish. This has a very attractive style. 16.5+ points

SB 55%, Sem 45%. Barrel fermented in 50% new barrels, 50% one year-old barrels. It then goes into steel until bottling. This vintage has a lovely clean nose, slightly creamy but full of exuberant citrus fruit; lively, floral and with good direction. A well formed palate, ripe and rounded, very slightly powdery but showing a fine perfume. Full of grip. This is an impressive over-performance and perhaps reflects the excellent vintage for white Graves. 17+ points

A wine with a dark core bearing a hue of black-tulip, and a vibrant garnet rim. The nose is very open and expressive, with an animal fur and game character most prominent at first, organic and yet perfumed. It is stony, with black flavours, notes of black olives, smoke and smouldering embers in the fire, violet flower petals and black truffle. The palate is very nicely held together on entry, fairly taut, and tightening up even more through the midpalate. Here it shows acidity and structure, extract and grip. It has a lean disposition, compounded by a tart apple-skin note, but this does not dominate the texture and substance of the wine. It has a very well defined finish, which is moderately short at present, but on the whole this is better than I was expecting from the 2000 vintage, and it has very good potential for the cellar. 17+ points

There is a nice density to this wine which shows some lovely exotic fruit on the nose, in a very attractive and open style. Like other wines in the portfolio it starts off soft on the palate, fleshy in style, but then with more backbone through the midpalate. There is good grip over a dried fruit character, and good acidity. An attractive wine which needs time in the cellar yet. 17+ points

An old favourite that I have really enjoyed in at least a couple of previous vintages. The nose has only subtle herbal cherry fruit, with a simple character, with a slightly confected edge, only lifted by some calcareous, seashell-like notes. An attractive palate though, with a lean and minerally bite, and a crunchy although slightly sweet and confected style. Overall it is rather simple and not as I was hoping. Nevertheless it has some good grip and nice acidity. 14 points

This has a darker hue than the Barco Reale, and it certainly has a more distinctive nose, with meaty, feral, funky aromas. The same character comes through onto the palate, although this is on top of a good depth of fruit here. Good concentration, ripe tannic grip, and nicely balanced acids. Interesting wine, and certainly a step up if you like the style. 16 points

This has a dark, glossy, dusky-red hue. The aromas are redolent of Christmas pudding and dried cranberries, with an intense fruit richness. On the palate it is big, sweet and creamy with a huge texture. There is a lot of pepper and spice, and notes of creamy vanilla and bramble fruits steeped in alcohol. It lacks finesse and definition, but it gives simple pleasure in droves. 16.5 points

Of the final wine, 20% has undergone carbonic maceration, the remainder has had a more traditional handling. It has a really deep hue on inspection, and the nose is youth and juicy, and packed with summer fruits. It is sweet, and very appealing. The palate is just as vivacious, with a touch of richness from the creamy, brambly fruit nicely countered by a crunchy cherry vein underneath. A very enjoyable easy drinking wine, well made, and certainly good value. 16 points
