2005 Stefano Accordini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Acinatico

Corvina Blend, Corvina more

February 2009
This comes from fruit harvested at around 50 hl/ha, loft-dried for 120 days, then fermented with stalks. Two years in oak followed. It has a nose of toffee, vanilla ice cream and brazil nuts, no doubt some characteristics down to the oak. The palate is rich and creamy, dense and nutty, with notes of slightly stewed fruits and the husks of freshly shelled nuts. A firm grip, plenty of tannin, and certainly a deep, structured, interesting wine. 17+ points

This has a fresh and aromatic character, even though there are some prominent honey and oak elements here. Soft, with a twist of cashew nut on the palate, and muted acidity. A little grip. Not a lot of direction here really. 13.5 points

This has dark and slightly feral fruit on the nose, with a sweet, gamey, maturing fruit character. Big and sweet and creamy, quite powerful, with a firm punch of tannin and alcohol. Huge, still rather backward, although it has moved on somewhat from last year, with lots of meat and appealing savoury elements to it. Very good, perhaps potentially excellent. 17.5+ points

Bottled under Stelvin. Attractive fresh cherry fruit here, with a slightly herby-chalky edge. Soft and round, a touch spicy on the palate, there is some nice substance to this. Even a little savoury in the end. A good wine, especially at this most basic of levels, and a touch more impressive than my tasting last year. 16 points

Pure Vermentino (which is the Italian name - the variety is better known as Rolle in French) from granite vineyards around the Bay of Calvi. It has a rather quiet nose, with some steely-lemony fruit. The palate kicks off in the same fashion, with crisp acidity to the fore, then revealing rather wild, slightly feral, bitter characteristics. Impressive acidity; this would be great with seafood. Good wine. 16 points

Clean, rather papery, green and slightly grassy. The palate is gentle, soft and chalky, with quite diffuse fruit but deeply buried acidity. A rather neutral style which intrinsically is a decent wine, but it says little of the Loire to me. (14-15) points

A very fresh and green nose here, grassy, with a little minerality too. A good palate, gentle but with bright acidity and a well-judged weight. A good, crisp, minerally midpalate. This is really attractive. (16-17) points

This wine has a very minerally style on the nose, with a rather herby character too. There are plenty of interesting elements here, a little funky, but also earthy with notes of rock dust. A nice weight, well balanced, with firm acids and a moderate texture. There is a lot of substance here, although it does also have a crisp, herby, minerally seam. (15.5-16.) points

This 100% Chenin Blanc wine comes from fruit grown on calcareous soils, hand-harvested at 30 hl/ha and fermented in oak. The nose is young, fresh and clean, and there is a good, spicy freshness to the palate with lots of good acidity. It has a low level of minerals, slightly papery fruit, but a nice, slightly grippy finish. This is good. 15.5 points

Here there is a mix of clay and calcareous soils, 100% Cabernet Franc, harvested at 35 hl/ha, fermented in cement. This sample has completed malolactic fermentation. There is sweet and ripe fruit on the nose, with an attractive and pure character. Elegant but also seeming appealingly ripe on the palate, but still showing a very firm acidity. The fruit has a pure, black cherry style, but with a stony, delineated style. Lots of structure, but not too fat or over-ripe. An attractive wine. (15.5-16.) points

This cuvée is sourced from old vines in Les Poyeux, fermented in cement and then raised in oak for up to fifteen months. This is thus still a barrel sample, and is scheduled to go into bottle on May 5th 2009. It has a fabulous nose, with beautifully elegant and dancing fruits; crunchy raspberry, plum and blackcurrant. This is very attractive. There is a pureness on the palate, which is well defined and stylish. Rich and yet balanced, with vibrancy too. A delicious wine. (17.5-18+) points

This cuvée replaces L'Expression from the 2008 vintage onwards. It was harvested at 25-30 hl/ha, fermented in cement, with malolactic, which hasn't yet finished in the 2008, in cuve and in oak. Antoine expects this wine to see out eighteen months in two-year-old barrels before bottling. The wine has a bright and red hue, with sweet and aromatic fruit on the nose, with a pure and dark character. It seems quite lean at present, with very primary fruit, and bright and stony acidity. Part of this reflects the unfinished malolactic. This will be a very good wine when completed I think. (16-17+) points

Made from estate-grown fruit, with ten months in oak after fermentation has finished. Plenty of colour and plenty of fruit on the nose too, with a dense, slightly roasted, warm character. Rich and a touch creamy on the palate, with a dry structure. Soft, not well focused, with good acids though. A wine with good potential, even if it does have a rather rich and warm character. 16+ points

Sweet and creamy fruit on the nose, certainly quite dense, and attractive with it. A rich and creamy style, not as huge or concentrated as I was expecting through the midpalate, It has a peppery edge, fresh acids at the centre, and a modestly dense substance. A fairly fresh, accessible style which should keep well in the cellar, in the short to mid term at the very least. 16.5+ points

Lots of great Syrah spice on the nose with gentle but peppery black fruit. This is certainly a very attractive start. Plenty of rich fruit on the palate, although with a rather laid-back texture, which leaves the acidity standing out a little more than I expected. I like this wine though, although it is difficult to predict how it will develop in the bottle. 16+? points

Clean fruit, but rather inexpressive compared to the two 2008s. Lovely freshness on the palate though, and a clean, middleweight texture. An attractive style, fairly reserved although there is a little spice there. Quite pure, elegantly textured, not showing a lot of aromatic character although I suspect that will come with time, and it does have a fine poise and grip. this is nice wine. 15+ points

This is a barrique sample, and has a cloudy appearance. Lots of sweet fruit on the nose, especially pears and stone fruit. It has a lovely depth, flattering texture and a broad and stylish mouthfilling weight. There is a little note of nut alongside the fruit. This is delightful and it has plenty of potential; I suspect it will be much more attractive than the 2007 given time. (16-17+) points

Another barrel sample, and the youthful nature of this wine shows on the nose which has a yeasty blend of fresh fruits. The palate impresses with its purity and presence though, with a creamy character, although not a rich-creamy, more a pure, silky, intensely pure-creamy, well framed by a good, precise acidity. This has super potential. (16.5-17.) points

Here the fruit is from a limestone terroir, fermented in wood with pigeage à pied and this is followed up by 18 months in barrel. A lovely, pure deep fruit character here, with great density. There is rich black cherry fruit, rich extract although also firm acidity, grip and structure. This has fine style and is impressive for the vintage, fresh but still a wine of substance. This is fermented in cement and wood, and then goes into barrique for one year. A great colour here, dark fruit on the nose, ripe and impressive in style. This is true of the palate also, which is balanced but creamy, sweetly textured, flattering but still youthful. There is a ripe, but firm structure, and a good grip of tannin which is a well-formed match for the fruit. A lovely wine. (16.5-17+) points

The "Cuvée Domaine", an assemblage of wine from gravel and limestone slopes. This is less open and expressive on the nose than Les Granges, and it shows a slightly darker profile of fruit. It still has life and vivacity though, with a good freshness to it. A nicely judged composition, with attractive fruit and depth, this cuvée is clearly the work of a skilled winemaker. Really rather good indeed. 16+ points

Fermented in stainless steel. This has vibrant, jolly fruit on the nose, sprinkled with a little black pepper. The palate is just as attractive, showing bright, fresh, lifted, crisp fruit character. Although clearly from a lighter vintage it has a really good freshness and style, and with that in mind it displays a lovely quality. Good wine. 15.5+ points

Another barrel sample. Stony fruit on the nose here, with a bright and fresh character, tinged with smoke. Nicely textured, soft and rounded, although the midpalate seems very diffuse and pillowy. Underneath though there is good grip and acidity. It does seem a little detached and unfocused at the moment though. (14.5-15.) points

Fermented in cement cuves, 100% destemmed fruit, will spend one year in wood and be bottled this coming April. This is a clear step up from the Cuvée Domaine, showing bright, lifted, crunchy red fruits on the nose, and a beautifully textured nicely defined style on the palate. Despite the wine's gravelly origins there is good structure beneath too, and good fleshy fruit. A very attractive wine. (16-16.5+) points

This wine has a rather pale hue in the glass, lemon-gold in colour, although I suppose my perception may be influenced by my expectations of richness and power. The nose isn't giving much away at first, showing a faint minerality, with more that a hint of wet ash. With time in the decanter it opens out, to reveal honey-tinged (although not sweet) minerals and straw. The palate shows nice weight on entry, good substance with a dry character, and plenty of bitter grip underneath it all. There is a good vein of minerality at the core, and a nice, rounded substance. The flavour profile is certainly distinctive, showing nettles, ash, chalky rock dust and more. A firmly composed wine, which in fact seems a touch hard on the palate at the moment, and I suspect it is going through something of an awkward phase right now. Nevertheless there is fine potential here I think. Leave well alone for a year or two I think. 17.5+ points
