Purchasd Autumn 2002. A pale golden yellow, with a very fine bead. Fairly delicate on the nose, with floral hints and a subtle, bready note. More showy on the palate, with a full body and good, creamy mousse, although quite foamy, with a somewhat sherbetty edge which I always find distracting. Strong acidity. Little complexity to the acidic, citrus fruits. Another that would benefit from six or more months in the cellar. 16 points

A lovely garnet red colour with the intensity of youth. Crushed berry fruits on the nose, with smoke and charcoal evidence of oak maturation, and some aromatic, rose petal notes. Ripe, full-bodied and with a rich edge to a pleasing texture in the mouth. Nice berry fruit flavours. Acidity is nicely balanced and not as prominent as many other Brunellos. Ripe tannins provide some grip and softly coat the mouth on the finish. A modern, approachable style. 16.5 points

Again a great colour. Closed on the nose I think, with just a hint of ripe fruit. Certainly closed on the palate - all texture and little in the way of fruit at present, but this will change. Plenty of spicy tannins. Some interest on the finish. Tasted alongside wines of the 2001 vintage in 16+ points

Wonderful colour. Dark, black crunchy berry fruits with a cigar box edge. Full texture on the palate, rich in depth of flavour, balanced, with buttery oak. Sharp but correct acidity and moderate tannins. Tasted alongside wines of the subsequent vintage in 16.5+ points

A lovely pale golden hue. Very appealing on the nose, which has ripe pears, stone fruit and minerals, with a rounded, mealy smoky edge. Delicious weight on the palate, lean and elegant yet mouthfilling, good acidity, delightfully balanced. Citrus fruits with a hint of the tropics. Wonderful concentration on the lingering finish. Plenty of potential here for development in bottle. 17 points

Here's a real bargain with no lack of quality. A good colour in the glass, with a strong bead. An exuberant nose when served at cellar temperature - full of creamy white fruits, nuts and yeast. A similar richness is present on the palate, a developed yeast and nut character, with a creamy mouthfilling richness, all backed up by correct acidity. Extraordinarily drinkable. 16 points

A very pale colour. Quite expressive on the nose, with good ripe gooseberry and greengage fruit, but also a less pleasing, harsh grapefruit character. Nice fruit on entry, but hollow through the midpalate, with a harsh, acidic mouthfeel, and lacks presence on the finish. A shame - this has been a perennial quaffer for me over the past few vintages. 13 points

Le Crock is another Cru Bourgeois estate owned by the Cuvelier family. Dark red-purple, less intense in colour than the following two wines. Initially quite green and stalky on the nose, although this soon blows off, leaving pleasant fruit with a slightly hard, metallic edge. Overall it seems somewhat rustic. There's good plump fruit on the palate, and a spicy tannic backbone which shows particularly on the finish. Somewhat incongruous alcohol on the finish also. No finesse here but pleasant enough. 15+ points

A chance to reassess this wine which seemed opulent and atypical when last tasted in April 2001. The colour is youthful although, unlike all the other wines in this flight, it has the faintest tinge of maturity. A classic nose - minerals and blackcurrant fruit, and an impressive palate - dense, sweet, intense fruit. Lovely texture, ripe tannins and correct acidity. This displays more typicity than when last assessed. Needs two or three years in the cellar. 18.5+ points

Of the three wines here this has the greatest depth of colour, yet also demonstrates the most evidence of maturity. Obvious style on the nose, the dense, pure fruit joined by complex mineral and meaty aromas. The palate has richness, but also balance and elegance. There's plenty of everything - it still has lots of fruit, and there are still some tannins on the endpalate and finish. Good acidity too. Pleasing length. 18.5 points

A mature colour, but still with bright red nuances. Sweet, ripe but gamey fruit on the nose. This is followed by a lovely presence on the palate. A meaty, mouthfilling weight, with plenty of sweet fruit. A low level of ripe tannins provide some backbone, and there's correct acidity. This is a more brawny, slightly harder wine, and lacks the elegance of some other vintages. Nevertheless, there is quality here. 17 points

A good colour, although also demonstrating some maturity. The nose is much more vibrant and typical than those of the preceding two wines. It is dense, with plenty of blackcurrant fruits, minerals and rose petals. Textbook St Julien. Great balance and fluidity on the palate, the hallmark for me of the 1985 vintage. Correct, integrated tannins and acidity. Overall supple, attractive and very approachable. Wonderful stuff. 18.5 points

A red-purple wine. Classy, youthful, typical St Julien on the nose. Sweet blackcurrant fruit. Closes down in the glass after a little while. Fat and rounded texture on the palate. Plenty of fruit. Lots of tannin on the finish, but acidity on the low side. This one needs two or three years more in the cellar. 17.5+ points

A dark red-purple wine. There are aromas of dense, sweet blackcurrant fruit, cherries and minerals on the nose. The palate offers plenty of sweetness and a full, rounded texture. There's a nice weight, lots of fruit and ripe tannins in the finish. Good acidity. This is nowhere near as hard and backward as when last tasted in April 2001, and is clearly coming out of its shell. Nevertheless I would recommend another two or three years before trying another. 18.5+ points

Another intense, red-purple wine. The nose doesn't give too much - some sweet mineral-edged fruit. Quite classy. Bags of structure on the palate. It's a massive, hard wine, with hidden fruit and plenty of tannin. Moderate acidity. Five years in the cellar needed here. 16.5+ points

An intense red-purple wine, like many in this flight. Initially very closed on the nose, but opens up to reveal dense, ripe, sweet fruit. An impressive presence on the palate, stuffed full of sweet fruit. Good acidity. Slightly hard texture, but less prominent tannin than some of the other wines. Five years in the cellar needed here. 16.5+ points

A moderate amount of sediment, just enough to require a decant. Still a fairly youthful garnet red at the centre, but with a tinge of orange pink maturity appearing at the rim. Good aromas on the nose - mineral and stone influenced fruit, dark cherries with a subtle edge of oak. Medium bodied, with a good presence of fruit on the palate, but an austere combination of firm, spicy tannins and strong acidity. There is a pleasing silky texture underneath it all, but for the wine to really show well it needs food. Needs another two to three years in the cellar. 16.5+ points

A fairly dense red wine, demonstrating more maturity than the other two in this flight. Quite classic and elegant on the nose - violets and flower petals, black fruits and a touch of smoke. Some fatness on the palate, with dense, sweet and smoky fruit. Good acidity. The gentlest streak of tannins on the finish but overall ready, approachable and very attractive. 15.5 points

Dense red-purple wine. Plentiful fruit on the nose, with a raspberry, blackberry and sweet blackcurrant profile. Round, firm structure, with good fruit and fresh, clean acidity. Still some spicy tannins but drinkable now. It has balance. Overall this is a richer, purer wine than the others in this flight. 15.5+ points

Purchased Autumn 2002. A lemon-gold hue. Some rich fruit aromas on the nose, with a smoky, brioche edge. Creamily textured on the palate, with firm mousse and sharp acidity. Good fruit. Very fresh and a step up in quality for Piper-Heidsieck. Would benefit from six-twelve months in the cellar. 16.5+ points

Synthetic closure, and beneath a youthful purple-red colour. Lots summer fruits on the nose, with a touch of smoky oak. Nice texture on entry, although it seems leaner on the endpalate, as some spicy tannins come into play. Moderate, balanced but very fresh acidity, and a fair quantity of tartrate crystals. Clearly designed for consumption in its vibrant youth, although those tannins would benefit from up to a year in the cellar. 16 points

An attractive, deep, red-purple colour. A lovely nose, full of dark chocolate-coated black fruits. The palate is divine - full of grip, with firm, structural tannins and great acidity. It's intense, serious, mouth filling and savoury, and has wonderful depth of flavour, with black fruits, spice and pepper. Tremendous stuff. 18+ points

A lovely colour, a coffee-caramel hue cut with a bright red hint. On the nose there are figs, caramel, toffee and hazelnut aromas. Good weight on entry, with medium-full body, and immediately apparent acidity cutting through the oily richness. Nut and toffee flavours mirroring the nose. On the finish, the acidity becomes a little more prominent, freshening the palate, and there are even some peppery tannins. Good integration of alcohol. Very pleasing indeed. 16.5 points
