A good, vibrant, garnet red hue with moderate intensity. The nose is stuffed with dark, smoky, brambly fruits, layered with oak. The palate has plenty of up-front chewy fruits, dominating the oak which resides in the background. Good concentration and a sweet, rounded texture. There's a seam of ripe but firm tannins which will integrate over the next one to two years should you wish to cellar this wine. Delicious now, but best with food. 16.5 points

Carlo Botter is a forward-looking cantine, not averse to teaming up with importers to produce wines as joint ventures, that turns out good value drinkers from its location on Sicily, using native varieties. A synthetic cork. The wine itself has only a moderate depth of colour, with a ruby-garnet hue. Good aromas on the nose, which has spice and leather, with earthy, undergrowth-tinged roasted fruit. Smooth, nicely balanced, full, seeming quite mature on the palate despite its youth. Soft, ripe, low level tannin, Medium body, with some texture. The texture, which has a note of polyphenolic compounds, seems to be barrel influenced, which would explain the loss of colour. 15 points

An appealing colour, garnet red, only moderate intensity, and showing some maturity at the rim. An evolved, open nose, of well hung game, a touch of undergrowth and leather, and some peppery, macerated blackberry fruit, over a layer of mature, integrating, well-used oak. Quite apparent acidity on entry, supporting a medium body with a thin seam of tannin. A lean texture, with flavours of dark macerated fruits. Plenty of tannins on the finish. These need a little time to integrate, but the wine lacks the concentration necessary for long ageing. Drink now with food, or cellar for two to three years more. 16 points

This, the oldest wine in the tasting, does not have the most elderly appearance. It is obviously mature, but has good density. It has a slightly exotic, mature, spicy nose, which offers some gamey, meaty aromas. On entry it seems somewhat hollow at first, but it opens out on the midpalate to reveal elegant, mature, gamey fruit. It has a lovely fluidity and balance, with correct acidity. Surprisingly it still has a goodly amount of tannin, and I think the wine will be dead before these ever fully integrate. Nevertheless a good, mature wine, although for drinking soon I feel, preferably with food. 16.5 points

This next wine has a slightly less impressive colour. Not very expressive on the nose, with some sweet and mature fruit showing just a little. There's plenty of structure on the palate here, which has more tannin than the previous wine, unfortunately with fading fruit. There's still some texture and the wine has character. It drinks well, but is drying out. One of the weaker wines of the tasting. Drink now. 15 points

Skipping some successful vintages we arrive at 1988. This wine is a complete contrast to the preceding two. It is dark, glossy almost, with fine, claretty fruit on the nose. A touch of exoticism too. Firm, upright, and structured on the palate - a classic Gruaud set-up. It doesn't have immediate appeal, but is clearly set up for further development in the cellar. The texture is a touch creamy, with plenty of sugary-sweet fruit, and piles of mouth-puckering tannin. Like the 1979, I wonder whether this wine will ever emerge from beneath all that tannin. 18 points

This is the first in a trio of vintages which ranged from unsuccessful to a washout. Still youthful on inspection. The nose still has fruit, with a dense and seemingly chewy character. Elegant on entry, with a fluid midpalate. There's plenty of structure, with a firm tannic backbone, and a good texture. It has good fruit, although it's not packed with character or flavour. Firm, spicy, tannin-laced finish. An impressive effort for the vintage. 15 points

This wine is showing a little age, with an earthy tinge to what is otherwise a dark, densely coloured wine. It's quite exotic and developed on the nose though, with some dense, tarry fruit, and also quite apparent oak-derived toffee and smoke. Very fluid on the palate, balanced, on the light side which is appropriate. Attractive, well rounded, almost seamless. Still has good fruit, and cigar-smoke. Still has a touch of tannin on the endpalate, but otherwise quite ready. Drinking now and over the next few years. Impressive for the vintage. 15 points

This is a vibrant, purple-red wine, a touch glossy. Burnt sugar, caramel and toffee aromas, all oak-derived, dominate the nose. It has immediate appeal on the palate though. Medium bodied at best, but with a creamy edged texture. Still has obvious structure, with quite a bit of tannin, especially on the finish. Fresh acidity. Sweet, almost exotic, caramel and wood influenced palate. Would drink with food now, but on its own it needs time - another two to three years at least. 15.5+ points

This wine has a dense red hue, with a rim showing some maturity. Somewhat diffuse, muddy fruit on the nose, difficult to pin down. Full and rounded on the palate, medium bodied, with roasted fruits. There is a structure that needs to integrate, the tannins are still quite evident, matched by correct acidity. Overall it seems dull, withdrawn. Not showing very well at present, this wine needs another three to five years at least. 16+ points

A dark red-purple, glossy appearance. On the nose it has sweet, slightly confected blackcurrant and cherry fruit. The palate has bags of structure, with plenty of sweet, ripe, concentrated fruit. Massive tannins. Very backward. Needs seven to ten years. 16+ points

What fantastic opportunity to taste the 2000 vintage, of which I have a number of bottles cellared, having split a case with a friend. Although tasted blind this wine sticks out like a sore thumb. It is an impressive looking, opaque, glossy wine. Intense, smoky, mineral-laced blackcurrant fruit on the nose, with real depth of aroma. The palate is firm, stuffed with tannins, but it also has plenty of concentration, texture and very primary fruit. Marvellous potential here. First growth quality. Don't touch another for ten years at least. 19+ points

This wine has a moderate colour. It is ripe and rich on the nose, with some evidence of lees contact. There's a tropical character to the fruit, perhaps mango, with a touch of cream. A fat, weighty texture on the palate, a touch oily even, but with firm grip and fresh, juicy, citrus-like acidity. Mouth-filling, and with a firm, persistent length. Delicious stuff. 16.5 points

Rich, yellow-golden colour. A change on the nose since last tasted, with more obvious maturity. Complex aromas of coffee, marzipan. Creamy, mouthfilling texture and mousse. A tropical note to the fruit, with toffee and coffee character. The previously obvious acidity, something that I have found to mark the 1992 vintage, has lessened and the wine has nice balance as a result. Creamy, complex finish. Ready now, but should drink for another three to five years. 16.5 points

An interesting style decision here, as this German wine declares it's contents - Pinot Grigio - in Italian, but then who would buy a wine made from Grauer Burgunder? A pale colour, with just a tinge of gold. Fairly typical of Pinot Gris (I'm sticking to the French name) on the nose, with slightly watery, waxed tropical fruits. Medium bodied on entry, with fresh acidity and a touch of grip through the midpalate. It has a bit of weight, and some decent flavours - slightly peppery white fruits in the main. Clean, fresh, citrus finish, with some body. 16 points

Good deep colour, with an earthy tinge of age. Still very primary on the nose, with smoky, claretty, stony, blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. The toffee-oak notes found on last tasting, eighteen months ago, have disappeared as the oak has integrated. Fairly lean on entry, medium bodied, with firm, ripe tannins still very much in evidence. Still has good black fruit, with a lemony, acidic edge. It fleshes out nicely on the midpalate, but maintains an elegance and has great structure. Needs another year or two in the cellar. 16 points

Good colour, dark purple-red, what I expect of the 2001 vintage which has been a success for Rioja. Richly fruited on the nose, with blackberry and cherry fruit, and some polished oak. A similar impression on the palate. Ripe, soft tannins, decent acidity and a lick of creamy oak. Very drinkable, as a crianza from a top vintage should be. 16 points

Typical youthful red-purple colour. Obvious youth on the nose, which flits from blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, to wet pebbles, to vanillin oak, and back to more of the black fruits. Full, almost lush texture on entry, but with plenty of evident grip and tannin from midpalate onwards, and really dominating the finish. Some good fruit, fresh but balanced acidity, and medium body. Strong on texture and structure, but not packed with character, although this may come with time. Needs two to three years in the cellar at least. 15.5+ points

Showing some maturity. On the nose it has a fruitcake and black fruit nose, which is full and plump, and there is also some persisting toasty oak. A touch creamy on the palate, with a full texture. Plump, ripe black fruits, and some grippy tannins on the finish. Nice spice. 15 points

The colour has some maturity, and a moderate density. Great interest on the nose, which has perfumed, mature, sweet, wood-spicy fruit aromas, with a macerated edge, intertwined with more complex notes of game, leather, violets and more. On the palate it is full and sweet, but with good balance, upset only by a seam of tannins that still runs throughout the wine. Lovely fluidity. Roasted-macerated fruit with more secondary flavours. Delicious and complex, but needs to lose the tannin. Try again in two to three years. 17+ points

Nino Franco began producing sparkling wine from the indigenous Prosecco grape in Valdobbiadene in the 1920's, and his grandson Primo now continues the family business. This wine has a pale, limpid hue, with a fairly fine bead. A very fresh nose, with notes of baked apples, herbs and lemongrass. Good fresh mousse on the palate, with lemons, herbs and pepper flavours. Very delicate, light in body, although with a pleasant, elegant texture, cut through with a lean, acidic edge. 15 points

A lovely, pale but vibrant colour. There is an abundance of fresh, ripe fruits on the nose, with tangerine, nectarine and melon, and notes of cream and honeysuckle. This is carried along by fresh acidity, with a creamy, rich, pithy, fleshy texture which reflects the success of he vintage. Flavours of fresh tropical fruits, mirroring those found on the nose. A touch of sweetness, and some grip as well. This is delightful - elegant yet full and ripe. 16.5 points

A good colour here, fairly dense, with a tinge of orange-earthy maturity to what is otherwise a vibrantly coloured wine. A complex nose, with truffle oil, mushrooms, five spice and slightly woody black fruits. A delicious palate, as it has fine balance apparent immediately on entry, combined with some body and texture. Flavours of macerated red and black fruits, tar, hung game and rose petals, backed up by some firm, woody tannins, and quite appropriate acidity. This is a fluid, complete and harmonious wine. 17+ points

Just a moderate intensity of colour to this wine, which has a ruby hue with an orange-pink tinge. The nose offers aromas of rose petal tobacco and roasted fruits, and with some air it takes on a haunting, captivating elegance. Lovely balance on the palate, which has spicy fruit, with a leathery edge, backed up by some ripe and spicy tannins. Firm, tingling acidity keeps the wine fresh. Elegance with a touch of power. Nevertheless, it's showing some evidence of maturity, and I would advise drinking now or over the next few years. 16.5 points

The Prà brothers, Sergio and Graziano, run one of the top estates of Soave. Their unoaked cru Monte Grande recently featured in my weekly Taste of Italy feature. This is their more basic Classico Superiore cuvée. A fairly pale wine. Good aromas on the nose, which has white fruits rubbed on stones and minerals, with a suggestion of a creamy, bready richness. This comes through on the palate, which has a lees-influenced flavour profile and texture. Fresh acidity buoys up a full, mineral-laced palate which has a creamy edge. 16.5 points
