A fairly well coloured wine. The nose is unfortunately peppered with unpleasant seaweed and iodine aromas, with a rotten, musty element to it. A very tertiary stage of development I think! On the palate it has a nice texture but rather lacks flavour, and is in fact quite dead. No doubt other bottles may well have fared batter over the years, and this may not be typical.

Obviously mature appearance, although still a lot of colour here. Some acetone volatile acidity on the nose, with medicinal calamine lotion and black olive aromas, but also dark and gamey, with liquorice, aniseed and a little rubber. An appealing, lifted nose indeed. Well defined palate, with roasted meat character. There is volatility here also, an attractive part of the whole package, which is bright, incisive, grippy, with a nice, rich extract. This is certainly much better than my last bottle, especially as the wine opens out over the course of the evening. Delicious, and ready to go now. 17+ points

This has a good depth of colour, quite dense. On the nose it seems rather hot and smoky, with burnt cherry fruit, with a sweet, liquorice edge. It doesn't have the profound volatility found back in 2004 (I can still smell that wine now). A lovely texture on he palate, firm and structured, precise and grippy. Rather svelte, with sweet cherry notes, and little in the way of depth or complexity. Rounded, concentrated, lots of potential here, but playing a little dumb on this tasting. 17.5+ points

Lots of colour here, and a complex tertiary nose, showing some Brett. Notes of sticking plaster with a deep, characterful, animalistic trait, and nuances of stony black olive. This has a much more obvious character than on any previous tasting. A nice weight on the palate, filled to the brim with Brett though, and with a sweet, mature, slightly stewed edge to the fruit, and some midpalate roasted meats. Rich for the vintage, rounded, but a little tinny on the finish. And a bit raw here too. Good, but for drinking up soon I think. 16.5 points

Deeply coloured, and very characterful on the nose, this is smoky, feral and furry, and has a more savage, farmyardy character than I can ever remember from previous tastings of this vintage. On the palate it is full, very rich, quite creamy, but also rather brutally youthful. It has plenty of grip, and is brawny in style, with good notes of pickling spices. Over this there is a plush, textured, almost velvety layer of fruit. It still has bags of potential for the cellar., but needs another 3-5 years minimum, but should drink very well after that. 17+ points

My first bottle from my case. A deep, rich hue, a dark red-black colour, almost opaque. The nose is already complex, showing some early secondary characteristics. It is fury and feral, deep, rich and meaty. There is still some primary, Grenache-cherry fruit beneath all this though. Rich, deeply flavoured and brimming with roasted, meaty fruit, the palate has a baked, warm-vintage character. This has a full-on structure, plenty of firm tannin, and a lingering finish. Excellent potential, and certainly for the long haul. 19+ points

This wine has a dense and youthful hue, with a very dark core, and a youthful red rim. The nose has a good complexity, and is quite feral and savage, alongside notes of meaty, cherry fruit. The palate is rich, full and deep, with a dense and grippy character, more so than I would have expected taking into account this is regarded as one of the fresher of recent vintages. There is plenty of texture and substance, and a firm acidity to balance it out. This is quite fine. 18+ points

A youthful, dense, concentrated wine which has a very expressive nose. It is filled with fruit of a ripe, cherry confit style, clean and pure, but with a rich, feral seam in the background, and a little furry toffee (if that makes sense!). This is really very, very enticing, and certainly holds a lot of promise. The palate is deliciously cool, rich and broad, quite deep, firmly acidic yet rounded and structured. It is very grippy and full of the promise suggested by the nose. Rich, delightfully extracted, well defined and very exciting. When stacked against 1998, 2001 and 2003, I think 2000 is an under-rated vintage. 18.5+ points

Very dense, opaque and concentrated, with incredibly dense roasted cherry fruit on the nose, pure yet feral and meaty, with fabulous intensity. This is remarkable. Full, creamy, dense and concentrated on the palate, yet fresh and cool, extracted, full of smoky and meaty fruit. Fabulous, broad, feral and characterful, a remarkably rich wine, packed with extract of smoky blueberry and just screaming potential for the future. This is an incredible vintage for Beaucastel, and I am glad I have my other bottles safely tucked away in the cellar. (19-19.5+) points

Very dark on inspection, and a touch glossy even. Very typical of 2003 on the nose, rather than of Beaucastel, emitting the same roasted confit cherry fruit I have also found in Tuscany and Bordeaux when tasting or drinking this vintage. Notes of black pepper too, perhaps the Syrah showing through? Rich and creamy, perhaps unsurprisingly, with lots of extract, texture and substance. Rather a touch of bitter cherry here, on the edge, but still a broad, mouthfilling, ripe and rich style. Loads of structure. Grippy finish. The palate is very typical of the vintage too, then! I am unsure as to how this one will develop. (17-18?) points

From a magnum. This has a brown, murky appearance. The nose brings to mind treacle toffee and heavily stewed meat at first, with a nutty, vegetal character. It is clearly not in good shape. Surprisingly not dried out on the palate, well textured through the midpalate, but quite hot thereafter. A bit of sweetness. This has not collapsed altogether but is plainly over the hill, although I suspect this is not typical and that other bottles may be fine. 13 points

This is 100% Chardonnay, obviously, and has a pale lemon gold hue with a very fine bead. The nose is elegantly floral and gentle, with little nuances of nuts and mint. A very fresh youthful style on the palate, with a lovely, lifted mousse. Gentle, just a little creamy, leafy and bright, this has a fresh, lingering finish. Rather full, still with a little of the foaminess of youth but I know this will settle down. Very good indeed, with certain potential. 17+ points

This is 100% Chardonnay. A plentiful bead in the glass, white foam on the top, and clearly a young cuvée here. The aromatic profile confirms this, as the nose is still very fresh with lemon citrus characteristics, although there are undertones of polished oak and cashew nut. The palate is very crisp and upright in the same vein as the nose, with a firm and tingling mousse and a punchy core of acidity. There is plenty of structure and raw potential here, rounded off in an steely, lemony, nettly finish. This is a wine that can be drunk now, but will be much more polished with another year or two of bottle age I think. 16.5+ points

Remarkably this is mostly Pinot Meunier, 85% in fact, with the remaining 15% Chardonnay. This blend gives the wine a lot of character on the nose and palate, the former dominated by warm, slightly honeyed, nutty notes, with a little touch of polished wood. Based on my limited experience with the likes of Egly-Ouriet, Pinot Meunier often gives these warm, richer aromas when well managed. The palate is gently creamy and meaty, with a well-poised mousse and a rich, rather caramelly lemon finish, backed up by plenty of sharp, nettly, tingly acidity. A very nice and inexpensive Champagne. 16+ points

Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier again. This wine has a delightful salmon-pink sunset hue, with an almost non-existent bead in the glass. Redcurrants and cream, with a leafy, green peppercorn edge, dominate the fresh, clean nose. On the palate there is a lovely, quite lively and creamy yet refreshing mousse, running alongside the bright, leafy, crisp and acidic summer fruit flavours. This has an exuberant, precise, well defined style which makes it a pleasure to drink. Really very good. 16.5 points

This particular cuvée, a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, has a much deeper colour than the last incarnation of Du Mont-Hauban's rosé that I tasted, with a deep pink-sunset glow, and there is a fat, plentiful, foaming bead. The nose offers up strawberry and redcurrant fruit with a leafy character, with just a hint of creamy richness. The palate shows a fine, vibrant immediacy as soon as it hits the palate, before settling down to a more creamy midpalate, where there is a delicious, tingling weedy-nettly acidity alongside the fresh fruit character. A good, stony-minerally character too. The green elements show through in a flourish in the finish. A very nice wine, with plenty to interest everybody here I think. 16.5 points

This is dominated by Chardonnay, although with a big dollop of Pinot Meunier too. Initially quite foamy and youthful in the glass, it soon settles down to show a pale straw hue and a moderate-sized bead. There are notes of gently honeyed oak on the nose, with a little nut too, and a little dried lemony fruit. The palate starts off nicely composed, with a nicely gentle mousse, which shows a more firm, sherbetty, lemony character in the midpalate and a firm, upright one in the finish. Along with some nice acidity this supports a gently honeyed, nutty character. Quite firm at the end. Nicely composed, drinking well now, but should be more settled and genteel in six to twelve months I think. Very good. 16.5+ points

A blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Meunier. It has an exuberant but moderately sized bead. The nose is fresh and clean, with a mineral edge, and is very bright and well defined. Fresh, lemony and crisp at first on the palate, then showing more well defined stony, nettly characteristics. This is an incisive wine, endowed with a beautifully fresh frame of acidity which is balanced out by a broad, mouth-filling palate. This is an absolute pleasure to drink. 17 points

A very dense colour here. The nose tells me this wine is plainly oxidised and suffering from heat damage, and resembles a glass-matured Banyuls more than claret. A crying shame.

Nice, crystal clear, golden hue. Nose very concentrated, sweet, candied marmalade fruit. Oranges, floral, peppery. Certainly outgoing and appealing. Nice, creamy weight, not the most forward acidity ever experienced, but a nice broad presence on the palate, certainly good sweetness, a little depth and character. A little stretched out in the midpalate, with good woody grip and not really enough presence to cope. Not quite the acidity or balance that I recall from my last tasting, but this is a good effort for the vintage I think. 15 points

A vibrant yellow-gold, with quite some depth to the colour. The nose is simply delicious, with aromas of honey, oranges, botrytis and just a bare hint of caramel. This is a creamy yet elegant wine on the palate, textured and sweet, but with an appealing balance provided by moderate acidity which lends the wine an almost silky presence. This is very fluid and complete, with finesse. Good length too on the finish where it reveals a little grip. Excellent. 18+ points

English bottled. A good density here, a mature claretty hue out to the rim, and an interesting nose, of wet stones, cool minerals, mushrooms and just a little vegetal note in the background. It takes a little while to open up, but as it does so it becomes apparent that this is very classically styled. Full, a nice weight, good fruit and firm acidity. This has a good presence, with a light, elegant, rather detached texture. Slightly hot on the finish, starting to show its failings here. Will be going downhill soon I think. Drink up now. 17 points

A rich, golden-orange hue. Roasted oranges and marmalade on the nose, rather bright, rather leafy and herby, but certainly a rich style. This has a nice, creamy character on the palate, fresh with decent acidity, but with those rich characteristics that were found on the nose. A good broad presence, fairly lively, attractive, a little grip to it even. Nice length. Very well put together, but more vigour and complexity would be appreciated. 16.5 points

A crystal clear wine, fairly pale, but vibrant. An attractive red core with a mature rim. Initially some slightly smoky sweet fruit, meaty but clean raspberry character, then later some intense, cough-candy liquorice style aromas. Rather light on the palate, with bright acidity which has no doubt kept this wine alive. It is attractive, but after a while it does seem to fall apart a little. It has lasted well though. 16.5 points

There is perfume in abundance on the nose here, this being a lovely fresh, stylish, mineral wine in character. The palate has an elegance, a rounded and complete texture. It has a little plumpness, and a little creamy grip to it as well. It has a style which I admire, and I think I have rated this wine a little higher than a good number of other tasters on the night. Very good indeed. 17.5 points
