A rocky, mineral character, smoky, with a touch of sulphur which is not a problem at this level I think. Full, seems almost gritty, certainly characterful, with a touch of flower petal. There is depth, but it has a slightly blowsy structure. And there is a chemical note on the finish; perhaps this will dissipate with further time in bottle? Quite good. 15 points

A smoky-mineral-chalky nose, rather bright with some rather artificial, confected apple fruit. Gently foaming mousse on the palate, with sharp acidity and flavours of freshly peeled Bramley apples. Full, rather obvious, a touch simple and one dimensional. And despite that acidity, rather unfocused. 13 points

A pale colour. Open, evolved nutty nose, cashew nuts in particular. Seems rather full and forward. Clean. Medium depth on the palate, gentle and rounded, a touch creamy. Gentle nuttiness, very accessible, fresh, with a nice vein of acidity through the finish. Clean and full. Very good. 15.5+ points

Mainly the 2002 vintage, with some 2001 and 2000 blended in. All premier cru. Served rather too cold. A lovely hue though, somewhere between the peachy tones of a sunset and a coppery onion skin. Fresh and clean on the nose, with notes of blackberry leaf. Crisp palate, quite firmly composed, with a nice grip on the finish. This has a good style. 15.5 points

Honey and oiled nuts here. Very well defined, quite precise style. Evolved, creamy and rich. Welcoming, softly composed, some good, mature toffee flavours. Correct acidity. Gentle, tingling mousse. A very soft style, but lovely for drinking now. 17.5 points

Rather closed on the nose. Subdued at first, the nose opens out to give notes of oiled wood and citrus leaf which is very attractive. The palate is bright and fresh, with a sharp acidity, still a little woody, but very nicely composed. Bright, refreshing mousse. This really very good. Now under the ownership of Bollinger, it looks as though there are good things happening at Ayala (there's a hint of the Bollinger style, too). 15.5 points

Surprisingly shut down on the nose. The palate is very clean and well presented though, with a good balance and fresh acidity. Altogether it is holding up well, but as on the nose it is shut down and their is no discernible flavour. But judging the structure, this has promise and should make for some good drinking in the future. 16+? points

Stewed raspberry on toast here, blueberries and tar. This wine smells more like a glass of port than some wines that truly originate from the Douro. Soft, rounded, a touch light on the palate, but intense, porty fruit. Not the freshness I would like. Very soft. 13 points

Sweet, slightly funky fruit on the nose, rather aromatic but in a light, fragrant way. Confected and quite herby. On the palate, light, accessible, lacking in midpalate flesh. Lean and rather sharp. Finishes with a bitter twist. Fair at best. 13.5 points

Rather sulphurous on the nose, like so many of the wines in this tasting. But so much here that it is difficult for me to judge. But it is dominating the nose more than it is the palate, which is refreshing, with a firm structure, a lemon-herbal character and plenty of acidity. This would probably develop well if left in the cellar for a year or two, but is not for drinking now. 15.5+ points

Smoky, a little nutty. A nice palate, very firm, very fresh, a good mousse. Full, with good acidity and a nice, lightly nutty flavour. This has a very nice style which just needs a little more time in bottle. 16+ points

In the bottle, which is made from clear glass as is often the case with these deliciously sweet wines, as it is in Sauternes and Barsac, the wine has a rich, golden hue. This carries through to the glass, where it displays an intense yet vibrant colour with hints of green alongside. The nose, however, is surprisingly muted. The wine was bottled under an agglomerate cork, which inevitably increases the risk of the wine being corked (certainly this is my experience, and there seems good plausibility to the explanation as to why this might be), but there is nothing here to suggest this is the case with this wine. The only telltale note I pick up is a faint, chemical-glue smell which comes from the adhesive used in the cork. How infuriating that despite so much effort in the vineyard and cellar, the character of a wine can be so easily dominated by the piece of bark that sits above it. Fortunately this wine shows a little better on the palate, where there is richness and texture, although it has a rather deep, solid, fruitcake character rather than the bright, vibrant, focused one which I might have hoped for. There is some good orange leaf flavour, but overall it is rather withdrawn, and I find the acidity a little low to be really seduced by this wine. And, to continue my criticism, the finish is rather short and a touch chemical. Over the next hour or so though, it does firm up somewhat. I am in no position to judge Domaine Bellegarde on this solitary encounter with one of their wines, but all in all, this has been a rather underwhelming experience. 14 points

Like the straight non-vintage, this too is showing a lot of sulphur. It was also served very cold. The palate, though, is quite well composed. It does not have a huge depth at present, although it is very firm and fresh, showing some attractive white fruit character. Nice peppery acidity. Difficult to judge, but it has promise. 16? points

There is still a lot of sulphur here, with notes of sea salt and minerals, and behind that some notes of slightly medicinal, cough-candy notes. Minerally, firm, salty but also very sulphurous palate. Quite full and characterful beneath it all though, and overall it is nicely composed. A good, firm finish. I can only hope that the sulphur will dissipate with time as it is quite predominant at the moment. 15 points

This wine was served incredibly cold, and I had to warm it in my hand before judging. This has a subtly oaky nose still. It is rather characterful, but not overtly obvious. It has a fine palate, a deep presence of fruit, is full and is nicely composed. There is firmness and even a little grip. A little vinosity too, even a honeyed note. Finishes very well. Excellent potential. 17+ points

Plentiful, ripe, forward fruit here, with a sooty, charcoaly edge on the nose. Full, sweet, fruit berry crumble. Not too overdone. There is some fruit freshness on the palate which is attractive, but also a little note of confection and a herby depth which adds some interest. A rich full style; good if this is what you favour. 15 points

A peachy, salmon pink hue. Really expressive nose, very open and obvious aromas of sweet, ripe strawberries with a green, nettly note spicing it up. Very full, mouthfilling style, but plainly very youthful and baring all its brutal structure today. Nice flavours, delicate red berries alongside more attractive peach and tangerine. Needs to soften up, but should be great when that has been done. 16.5+ points

Another wine which seems a little closed down today, although it has some appealing notes of smoke, blackcurrant leaf and honey. Pervasive presence on the palate, although with very primary flavours. Creamy depth. Bright. Very acidic, with a fine mousse. This undoubtedly has good potential. 16.5+ points

A tasting of the latest release of the NV cuvée. This has a rather typical nose for Bollinger, of oiled wood and the mature note of oak fermented reserve wines. Full, dry, somewhat organic in character, with citrus orange notes through the midpalate. It is big and rich, a full bodied style, a touch oaky, with a fading mousse on the palate. Good acidity. Very good. 16 points

The first vintage from Brit Trevor Robinson, made from 100% Carignan cuvée harvested in Fenouilledes and vinified with the help of Guy Predal of Domaine Marcevol. A quite dark, purple-red hue in the glass. The nose is just bursting with fruit, in a peppered strawberry and blackberry vein, which is certainly attractive, and is cut through by a high-toned character. At first a little lean on entry, later more rounded and medium bodied, showing a very plain structure, but restrained and rather attractive. Lots of firm acidity, just a little tannin, overall I like its presence on the palate, which has a clean texture but has an appealing challenge and is fine for drinking with food. Short but nicely rounded off finish. A very good effort, especially for the first vintage. 15.5 points

Rather sulphurous nose, with little else showing here today, so the nose is rather difficult to judge. An exceedingly foamy palate, very open and soft, the wine almost disappears on the palate, leaving just a trace of a few bubbles. I can find little in the way of positive comment to make here. 12.5 points

A touch chemical on the nose, otherwise this isn't really very expressive. On the palate it immediately seems quite flattering, but is rather flaccid and obvious. A soft, fading mousse through the midpalate. A lighter style than many, but I think this lacks presence as much as anything else. 14.5 points

Rather a chemical note on the nose here, a rather like the smell of paper towels. Not at all appealing. Very obvious on the palate, some white fruits and peach, with lean, sharp acidity. Very tight. Lots of structure. I'm not convinced that this will round out to anything exciting. 13.5 points

Smoky-stony-steely lemon and mineral nose here, with just a touch of residual sulphur. Very bright and quite nicely focused. Light, sharp, softening just a little on the midpalate. A gently fading mousse. Rather a citrussy-sherbetty feel to it on the finish. This is quite good at best. 13.5 points

Nutty, clean, light and herbal on the nose. Quite appealing on entry, rather lithe, balanced, with a gentle mousse. It flows calmly across the palate. It is clean and attractive, but doesn't have the depth or structure that we might hope for. Merely good. 15.5 points
