This is an impressively coloured wine. A deep blood red-black hue supporting a very fine sediment. On the nose there is a melding of fine, dark summer berry fruits with nuances of chocolate and vanilla, and more prominent aromas of tar, undergrowth and pickling spice complexity. On the palate this wine just exudes class. It is structured and elegant, with power and grip but not the obvious sweet and round texture of some other examples of this DOC. It's amazing that this wine has, like many of its ilk, 15% alcohol, as this doesn't show on the palate at all. Clean, ripe berry fruit, and wonderful balance. The tannins show on the finish, and undoubtedly this wine requires more time in the cellar, say three to five years. 18+ points

This is a dark, garnet red hue with a tawny rim. Quite closed on the nose, offering just hints of sweet, roasted fruits. Very nicely structured on the palate, tannins just in the finish. Lovely roundness, rich texture, complete, with sweet and spicy fruits. Firm rather than lush. Drinking well now. 17 points

Lovely, deep, purple-tinged dark red hue. Initially very withdrawn on the nose, but after some time it begins to emerge from its shell. There's smoky, mineral and stony edged blackcurrant fruit, with perfumed violets. Expectations are raised, and pleasingly there's no disappointment on the palate, which has obvious weight and rounded sweetness, and is filled with more smoky blackcurrant fruit. Beautiful structure, tannins with a touch of grip, and cracking acidity. What a package! Eminently approachable, but will repay cellaring. 16.5+ points

A deep red wine, with a mahogany tinge of maturity. The nose here is earthy, more rustic than the following wines, but also quite complex. Wonderful plum and roasted/macerated summer fruit character, with masculine notes of tobacco leaf. A big, rich, mouthfilling palate with great balance and fluidity. The sweet fruit still lies at the core despite this wines age. Correct structure, with fully integrated tannins just showing a touch on the finish. This is fully mature and ready for drinking now. 17 points

From a half-bottle. A gorgeous colour, reminiscent of smoked salmon. Strawberry and raspberry fruit on the nose, with hints of soy sauce. The palate is immediately impressive on entry, rich and creamy, with a full, foaming but elegant mousse. More elegant summer fruits, particularly strawberries with cream, with a leafy edge. Good acidity. Drinking very well now, but will be fine to drink over the next one to two years. I feel that Billecart-Salmon produce the most attractive non-vintage rosé Champagne. 17+ points

Purchased Spring 2002; twelve months further bottle age. A lemon-gold hue. Very typical Bollinger on the nose, which has rich, meaty, marzipan aromas, with nuances of toffee and yeast autolysis. The palate is lovely, quite classic yet also rich and structured. More nutty, almond aromas, carried by good acidity and structure. It's showing some characteristics of maturity on the palate, but the wine would still benefit from a year or two more in the cellar. Classic Bollinger. This non-vintage Champagne is a mini Grand Année if I ever tasted one. Definite development even over just a few months. Assessed in 16 points

A dense, much more youthful looking wine. What a gorgeous nose, full of creamy blueberry and blackberry fruit crumble, with a rounded, smoky, buttery character. A sumptuous, lush texture on the palate, but underpinned by lovely structure. Still a touch of firmness and some tannin showing on the finish. Lovely creamy quality and good length. Will benefit from another year or two in the cellar, but drinking beautifully now. An impressive effort for the vintage. 16+ points

A dense, inky darkly coloured wine, showing it's youth with a pink, vibrant rim. Rich, ripe, plump blackcurrant fruit and cream on the nose. Like the 1994, a rich, sumptuous mouthfilling wine, again with good underlying structure. Fluid and structured, obvious firm tannins. Quite a serious wine, and clear evidence of the improvement in quality that this estate has seen over the last decade. Needs another three years in the cellar. 16.5+ points

A deeply coloured, opaque, garnet black hue. Initially closed, the characterful nose takes some time to open up. When it does it offers up aromas of tar, rose petals, and roasted plum and blackberry fruits, together with some volatile components. It is also quite closed on the palate, but does show an impressive texture and lovely structure. Fine, ripe, supple tannins, which just show a touch of firmness on the finish, are nicely balanced out by a rich, opulent, luscious texture, some extract and correct acidity. It all pulls together to support the 15% alcohol very well as it hardly shows. Wonderful structure. With time some lovely sweet blackberry and blueberry fruit, edged with charcoal and more rose petals begins to show. This will be a delightful glassful if given time to come out of it's shell. Needs another year or two in the cellar before broaching again. 17+ points

Macabeo, Parellada, Xarel-lo & Chardonnay from Penedés, specifically from the Can Vendrell de la Codinale vineyard. The wine has a lemon yellow colour, and a moderately sized bead. A solid nose, with aromas of white bread, herbs and white fruit. Some nice qualities on the palate, which has lovely, fresh acidity and some savoury white fruits. Pleasing weight, a touch of creaminess towards the finish. Nicely poised, very clean, and great fun. 16.5 points

This is one of the paler wines. An intriguing nose, with toffee, orange fruit and a touch of caramel. Structured and balanced palate, quite seamless through the midpalate, with fully integrated tannins. Roasted, spicy black fruits. Not as sweet or as obvious as some of the other wines. Good wine - I enjoyed this more than my last tasting of Cantemerle 1990. Drinking now. 17 points

A deep, youthful garnet red hue. The nose takes some time to open out to its full potential, but it is worth the wait, as it offers up multiple, complex aromas of dark, ripe fruits, with nuances of rubber and liquorice, which give way to more dominating aromas of smoke and charcoal. More than a match for the nose, the palate is similarly impressive. Plenty of body and extract, full bodied, with plenty of spice and blackberry fruit flavour. Just a moderate amount of grip, with approachable tannins cut through by some brilliant acidity, make this wine delicious to drink now. What a delight. 16.5 points

A dark, ruddy coloured wine, although not very dense. Very rustic nose, with some macerated plum fruit. Fairly light on the palate, maybe even a touch dilute. Has a low level of somewhat aggressive tannins and warming, spicy alcohol, both of which show on the finish. Seems a little disjointed. Nice roasted plummy fruit though. The colour suggests a little barrel ageing has occurred, unsurprisingly for Chapoutier, and this would be supported by the mouthfeel. 14 points

This wine has a fairly deep, medium ruby colour with an earthy tinge. The nose takes a little while to open up, but then offers aromas of black cherries, smouldering hickory, white pepper and garrigue herbs. Medium to full bodied on the palate, with some peppery cherry fruit, slightly oily mouthfeel, chalky tannins and appropriate acidity. Plenty of pepper on the finish. But is there a trace of heat damage? Nevertheless, good wine. 15.5? points

This wine has a very typical Riesling colour. Lovely nose, which clearly reflects the success of the vintage. It's very ripe, displaying white fruit aromas with a tropical edge, laced with notes of flinty, slatey minerals and flower-petals. This rich character is followed through on the palate, which is ripe, fleshy, dense and mouth-filling, more like a Spätlese that your average Kabinett - no surprise, as many Kabinett wines of this vintage were in fact bottled at Spätlese ripeness levels and above. This is balanced by fresh, zippy acidity. It's a glorious combination, which remains through a balanced, savoury, mouth-watering finish. 16.5 points

An attractive, vibrant garnet hue. Nice development on the nose, which is fairly stinky, with mature cheese aromas and notes of burnt toffee. A good but simple palate. Nicely balanced, with some chewy, burnt fruit aromas and gentle acidity. Has a bit of grip which is appealing. Enjoyable wine which has shown the benefit of short-term bottle age. Ready, but will improve over the next year or two I feel. 16 points

This is a dark wine, which shows some maturity but still has a garnet-red core. A lovely nose, quite rich and open, displaying sweet, nutty, roasted fruits. The palate is big and structured, with plenty of tannins still obvious from the midpalate onwards. Not as sweet or as full as some other wines, but has plenty of mouthfeel. Some cigar-smoke elements alongside the fruit. Classic Haut-Batailley. 17+ points

A very similar mahogany-tinged deep red colour. A bit stinky at first, and quite closed, but the nose soon opens out to reveal sweet fruit and a metallic, iron-filing nuance. Good extract and richness on the palate, but not overdone. Sweet rounded texture and correct acidity. Roasted fruits with a meaty character. Drinking now. 17 points

Purchased Spring 2001. This wine still has a fine, pale, lemon-gold hue, with a fine bead. The elegance carries through onto the nose, which has some secondary nut and coffee characteristics alongside classic Lanson green apple aromas. The palate has great acidity, which carries emerging secondary coffee and nut characteristics from the midpalate through to the finish. Great pleasure comes from the creamy mousse. Finishes with some richness, displaying hints of more obvious maturity to come. A delicious non-vintage Champagne which often offers great value for money. 16+ points

A dark, maturing hue. This is quite distinct from the other wines, with a floral, elegant nose, like rose-petals edged with toffee. Full flavoured palate, with a creamy, fat texture. Plenty of structured to underpin this, with spicy tannins which show especially on the finish. Some elegance is apparent. This is very typical of the commune, and extremely good wine. 18.5 points

One of the more youthful looking wines in this line-up. A rich, open nose with plenty of pure although somewhat baked blackcurrant fruit, with a suggestion of sweetness. A lovely balanced palate, good fluidity but with a full, rounded sweetness. Roasted fruits. There is good structure, with tannins still showing on the elegant finish, and correct acidity. This is drinking very well now, but will continue to improve for three to five years. 17+ points

A gorgeous colour, quite a deep and rich golden hue, but cut through with a tinge of green. Fresh and vibrant on the nose, immediately offering grapefruit and other citrus fruit aromas, followed up by notes of honey, fresh white bread and stone fruit also. Ripe and mouthfilling on the palate, but with a firm grip and fresh acidity. This is matched by a developing honeyed texture which will only get better with time. White and stone fruit flavours, with a nutty edge. Some bitter quinine on the finish, where it is really very savoury and still grippy. This is delightful stuff, with potential to develop in bottle for several years I feel. 17+ points

May 2003
Purchased Spring 2002; twelve months additional bottle age. A good density of colour here, with a fine bead. It's very easy to enjoy the nose, which offers plenty of juicy stone and citrus fruits, with an almost tropical ripeness, as well as notes of cashew nuts and brioche. A lovely weight on the palate, with more nutty elements glimpsing out from behind the fruit. A soft and creamy mousse, backed by good acidity, and a clean finish. Some nuances of maturity, but essentially still very fresh and primary. A completely different, much more accessible style to the Bollinger, but still classic and elegant. 16.5+ points

May 2003
Tommaso Bussola designates his wines as BG and TB, the latter being the finer. This wine has a lovely, dark colour, a dense and glossy hue, although not inky or black. It doesn't prepare you for the nose, which is dense, powerful and impressive. Aromas of blackberries and chocolate fill the room, and closer examination reveals notes of black pepper and pickling spices. The palate is luscious and sweetly textured, from entry right through to the finish. Despite it's full body, ripe, spicy tannins, power and grip it has delightful balance. There are piles of fruit, with notes of coffee grounds and more of those spices. It finished very well, with tremendous length. A wonderful melding of elegance and power. 18.5+ points
