1998 Château Angélus

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

May 2004
Harvest began on September 27th and lasted a week. This wine has 66% Merlot and 34% Cabernet Franc although there is also a little Cabernet Sauvignon planted here. Between three and four weeks maceration. A dense colour. Roasted nuts and dark fruits on the nose. Great density when tasted, appealing concentration, and still has plenty of tannic structure at present. A medley of red and dark fruits on the palate, supple tannins and correct acidity. A great presence on the palate, and a good clean finish. 18+ points

A very dark tawny colour, with a deep red tinge. A lovely nose, typical of the commune, stony but also floral. Full, firm, and a touch of austerity here. Still quite a bit of tannin. Good fruit as well though. Seems a little angular and disjointed. Not a brilliant showing, but certainly quite drinkable. 16 points

Baron de Ley is a large estate created with a Bordeaux-like philosophy producing widely available, new-wave Rioja. This is their attempt at a premium cuvée. Not even a piece of embossed plastic for a label could dissuade me from trying it once. It has a dark red-black hue, concentrated right out to the rim. Firstly intense blackberries and liquorice on the nose, then some smoke and rubber, and a goodly amount of French oak. Immediately apparent on the palate is the texture and extract that is present. It has lashings of each, with ripe, supple tannins and decent acidity too. A really big wine, with some structure, although there is an artificial, slightly blowsy, anabolic steroid induced characteristic too. 15.5 points

A green tinge of colour here. Fresh nose. Surprisingly light and elegant on the palate, but this is the character of this cuvée I think. Needs time in the cellar to develop some complexity. May just reflect the weaker vintage. 15+ points

Current release. A non-vintage blend of fifteen different vintage wines. Unsurprisingly on the nose this shows complexity, no doubt derived from more mature vintages included. Nevertheless it is very fresh on the palate, gently sweet, elegant. Another wine that needs time in the cellar; five years or so. 16+ points

Tasted in Rochefort sur Loire only. Very pure nose, but somewhat closed. On the palate it shows excellent concentration but no real complexity as yet. Correct structure. As with the 2001 this will drink for decades, but it doesn't quite have the edge. 18.5+ points

Tasted twice; once in London and once in Rochefort-sur-Loire. A splendid nose that just speaks volumes. The palate is no less impressive, stuffed full of honey, toffee-caramel and mineral flavours, with a floral complexity. Clean, beautifully textured, a superb length. This is fabulous. Should drink for decades. 19+ points

Unlike the preceding wines this has a glorious deep-gold hue reflecting this wines age. A complex nose, yielding aromas of quince, honey and nectar. The palate is rich but dry which seems almost paradoxical. Structured and grippy. Showing well for a weak vintage. 16.5 points

A fresh and typical nose. Clean entry, showing little at first, but it has lovely acidity and structure. Then on the endpalate it fans out to reveal all the nuances that Savennières can offer. Concentrated and delicious. Needs two to three years in the cellar. 17+ points

Not giving away too much on the nose at present. The palate displays good texture, and superb concentration. Here is a wine that demands time in the cellar. 16+ points

Juliette Bécot talked us through the wine. The vineyards are planted with Merlot 70%, Cabernet Franc 24%, Cabernet Sauvignon 6%. There were some roasted grapes due to inappropriate leaf-thinning in July. Macerated for thirty days, malolactic in barrel. A very dark, opaque wine. The nose has elegant, very pure, fresh fruit. The palate is rich, velvety and very textured. Beneath this lies structure and acidity. The fruit on the palate shows a slightly bitter, confected edge, although I doubt this will persist. There is good potential here, but it needs five years at least in the cellar. 17+ points

A cru bourgeois property. A dark core, fading to a pink-orange rim. Lovely, open and expressive nose. A sweet, elegant palate, although with some power. Deliciously silky texture, with a soft and seductive appeal. Notes of dark bitter chocolate on the flavour profile. Ready now. 17.5 points

This property lies adjacent to Angelus. The vineyards are planted with Merlot 70%, Cabernet Franc 20%, Cabernet Sauvignon 10%. Low yields here, 38hl/ha, up to five weeks maceration. Another dense hue. The nose is more straightforward, although packed with fruit and very vibrant. Good structure on the palate, plentiful tannin, with balanced acidity and some texture. Not as full or as impressive as some other wines but nevertheless very good. 16 points

A close neighbour to Beau-Séjour Bécot. The vineyards are planted with Merlot 80%, and Cabernet Franc 20%. A lighter, less dense colour here. The nose is more open, with some upfront fruit and a confected edge. It doesn't immediately appeal. The palate is lighter than many other wines here, and has less of everything - tannin, body and structure. There is elegance though - a plus point. Red fruits complete the picture. Good at best. 15.5 points

Not tasted at Bellerive - this is one from my cellar. A pile of potassium tartrate crystals here - as is the case with all the bottles so far. A fairly deep golden here, more pleasing to the eye than I recall with previous bottles. Some lovely aromas on the nose, which is full of marmalade and other botrytis derived scents. Rich, balanced, sweet yet fresh on the palate, with the security of botrytis for flavour. Vanilla notes. This is the best showing yet from this case, with none of the appley, struggling-to-be-sweet impression gained from the first bottle. And certainly no oxidation. What a concentrated, botrytised, flavoursome, yet elegant and balanced, delight. Should drink well for a decade if not more. 18 points

Wow! This wine, tasted following the 1998-2001-2002 trio stands head and shoulders above those three vintages. First notable difference is the colour - a deep, burnished, golden-orange. It impresses on both the nose and palate, being packed with concentration and botrytis related complexity. This is hedonistic stuff indeed - no wonder the 1997s were poured last. It needs another five to ten years in the cellar, and should drink well for fifteen to twenty years thence. 19+ points

This wine demonstrates a very similar colour to the 1998. Closed on the nose. Good concentration on the palate, again matching the 1998, but much less expressive. This wine needs time in the cellar before drinking - five years at least. 16.5+ points

A touch richer here. Again very closed on the nose. But here there is more structure and concentration evident on the palate. This is a solid, firmly structured wine which demonstrates clear potential for the cellar. Needs five to seven years. 17+ points

A special blend of the better vats, selected by a post-fermentation tasting, made only in the better vintages. Incredibly this surpasses the straight 1997 cuvée in terms of colour and even concentration on the palate. It is rich, opulent, oily and dominated by botrytis. The acidity struggles a little to cope, and right now the regular cuvée just has the edge, but cellar time may change that. This is still incredible wine. Drink five years from now, for ten-fifteen years. 19+ points

Purchased by Chanel in 1996; their man on the ground John Kolasa talked us through the wine. An 18 ha site, with ongoing replanting. The vineyards have Merlot 75%, and Cabernet Franc 20%. The grand vin included 46% of the crop. Back to the densely coloured wines here. Dark, plum fruits on the nose, with roasted nuts again. A medium bodied palate, with an appealing velvety touch. Rounded and rich. A good tannic structure behind it, with firm acidity. This is lovely. Great potential. 17+ points
