A glossy red purple wine. Loads of berry fruit on the nose, with blackcurrant to the fore. Dense, chewy and youthful fruit on the palate, with a fresh, crunchy edge, crisp acidity and peppery tannins showing through on the finish. Needs time. 16.5 points

A good depth of colour and a youthful, red-purple hue. Although fairly inexpressive on the nose when opened, after two or three hours of aeration in the decanter and glass there was more apparent fruit. Lots of crunchy, smoky blackcurrant and currant aromas. On entry there is an elegant texture, with a medium body and plenty of fruit. Structure is provided by a firm backbone of tannins, with balanced acidity. Overall a slightly tight wine that takes a little time to open out, but it is worth the wait. Nice length. 16.5+ points

Another wine which I have tasted before. This time it gives little on the nose, just the suggestion of ripe fruit. The palate shows a good structure, supporting flavours of char grilled bell peppers and black fruit. This is full of very primary, youthful flavours. It has style, and great potential. 16.5+ points

This has a greater depth of black fruit on the nose, and again a fairly classic palate with smoothly textured fruit, chocolate, and a structure of dry tannins. Some fruitcake spice. 16.5+ points

Chocolate and gently crushed, spicy black fruits on the nose. A fairly classic palate, with some smoke and spice character to the fruit. There is a chalky edge to the tannins. Lacking in body or depth. 15.5+ points

Fantastic nose here, with a mix of nuts and marzipan, yeast and biscuits. Clear elegance on the palate, with a great depth of fruit coming through, with the same nuts and marzipan complexity. Wonderful balancing acidity and a soft mousse. Lovely stuff. Drinking well now, but sure to improve with further bottle age. 18 points

A tasting of the cuvée on the market at the time. More yeast is evident on the nose than I recall from previous cuvées. Nevertheless, a more typical combination of fresh apple yeast flavours are evident on the palate, with good lemony acidity. A toast and biscuit edge develops. Soft and creamy mousse. A good, clean NV wine. 15.5 points

This has smoky cherries on the nose. Also quite characterful on the palate, with cherry fruit and roasted herb flavours. Medium bodied, with slightly prominent alcohol and an unfortunately just a touch of confection. 14 points

Quite a characterful nose here, with some sweet raspberry fruit, aniseed and liquorice aromas. Similar character on the palate, with medium body, moderate tannins and balanced acidity. A touch chewy and sweet, with a macerated edge to the fruit. 15.5 points

This has good fruit on the nose, with already some suggestion of grilled meat aromas. A full bodied palate, with plenty of character. A layer of red fruits sit with spicy meats. There are some obvious chalky, mineral tannins, and the palate is cut through by a fair amount of acidity. With more fruit on board I would say this has good potential for ageing, but as it is I'm not sure. 15+? points

Lovely fresh and clean fruit on the nose, with good raspberry fruit and some pleasing aromatic notes, I feel reflecting the inclusion of Viognier (as well as Mourvèdre and Cinsaut) in the blend. There is a touch of elegance on the palate, with orange oil and blossom notes complimenting the clean raspberry and blackberry fruit. I like this one. 15.5 points

This wine has a good, clean and classic Syrah nose. Red and black fruits in abundance, with some notes of black pepper. The palate has a nice body, with clean fruit and a touch of peppery interest. Nice tannins and fresh acidity. This is the nicest red in Bonterra?s range. 15.5 points

Fairly clean and classic peach and pine nut aroma here. The palate has a fairly oily texture, with some good peach, apricot and nut flavours, and a touch of orange peel. Not too alcoholic, good body, fair acidity. Not a bad effort for a New World Viognier. 14.5 points

A lovely golden colour in the glass. On the nose, there are aromas of spice and pineapple. This is a ripe and fairly expressive nose. Nevertheless, the palate seems quite simple. Despite a luscious level of residual sugar, which gives an amazingly rich, hedonistic mouthfeel to the wine, there is little character to the wine at present. Just a subtle undercurrent of pineapple fruit and more spice, mirroring the nose. Great acidity though, and the upright structure makes this wine easy to drink despite the lack of interest. I would hope this latter problem would recede with the complexity that results from bottle age. 16+ points
