1998 Domaine d'Aupilhac Coteaux du Languedoc Montpeyroux

November 2003
Comprised of 30% each of Mourvèdre & Syrah, 20% Grenache and 10% each of Carignan & Cinsaut. Deep, densely coloured, red-black wine. Fantastic nose - rich, pure blackberry Syrah fruit. On the palate there is plenty of tannic structure which gives a hard, firm edge to what is not quite a creamy texture. Massive fruit and firm acidity. This is impressive stuff that really needs two maybe even three more years in the cellar. 16.5+ points

November 2003
Comprises 40% each of Mourvèdre & Carignan, and 20% Syrah. An intensely coloured, dark garnet-purple wine. And what a nose! Open, warm and expressive, stuffed with the scents of the garrigue over dark, rich summer fruits, and a smoky edge. A full, sweet, creamy edged palate, with massively rich texture, backed up by dry tannin and just moderate acidity. Plenty of flavour here, and plenty of potential. Needs another two or three years at least in the cellar. 16.5+ points

Sweet fruit on the nose, with a dense, peppery, canned strawberry character. A full, sweet texture on the palate, with some grippy tannin and low acidity. Dense, dark fruit flavour profile. Simple wine, but certainly very drinkable. 14.4 points

An edge of perfumed fruit on the nose here, on the back of firm, earthy, gravelly character. A lovely palate, very 1996 in character, with smooth Cabernet fruit, a stylish, not quite creamy texture, good tannic structure and balanced acidity. There is elegance here too. 17.5+ points

An impressive nose, packed with dense fruit. Firm structured, rounded and full-bodied. There is some texture, but it is a little hidden behind the firm structure at present. Good sweet fruit though. One for the cellar. 16+ points

Good, deep colour. Not giving away much on the nose after first, but after a long time in the glass it reveals some roasted fruit notes. The palate behaves in a similar manner, initially all structure and no fruit or texture. With time, however, it fills out to develop a full, fleshy texture, although the fruit remains hidden behind the tannin and acidity. Closed at present. I recommend this not for drinking now, but for three or four years in the cellar - after which I think it will be really singing. 16.5+ points

1999 Château Cazal Viel Saint-Chinian Cuvée des Fées

November 2003
The Cuvée des Fées is 100% Syrah. A deeply coloured wine, with a rich nose, full of smoky, slightly sweet and tarry bramble-blackberry fruit, with floral-herbal nuances. On the palate it has sweet, blackberry-pie fruit and a rounded texture, yet this is cut through by some slightly raw, savoury tannins. Good firm acidity too. This is a wine with plenty of character which although approachable now will certainly keep for a year or two. 16.5 points

A delicate nose, with floral peach and apricot fruit. Quite a firm entry, with good acidity, but some slightly confected apricot fruit. Overall a lightweight wine. 15 points

This has sweet, liquorice-edged black fruits on the nose. The palate is a touch lean, but has some nicely rounded black fruits. Plenty of tannic structure but a hollow midpalate. Lacks flesh. Perhaps it will fatten out in bottle. 15+ points

Restrained nose. Lovely texture and weight on entry, leading into a creamy midpalate. Rich in dark black fruits and ripe tannins, with roasted nut flavours alongside the fruit. This has really fattened up since I tasted it in January 2003 when I hardly rated it at all. 16.5+ points

From 90 year old vines. Glossy appearance. Very serious nose here, packed with roasted fruits. Complex palate, rich in extract and structure. Ripe firm tannins. Needs five to eight years. From 60 year old Syrah vines. A delicious nose here, with a wealth of roasted fruits. Soft, rich, rounded, almost creamy on the palate. There is extract and a ripe tannic structure hovering in the background but this is very approachable now. A modern style. 17 points

100% Syrah, 18 months in new oak. This is much more restrained on the nose than the preceding wines, but there is a promising wealth of sweet black fruits. Nevertheless, it is surprisingly approachable on the palate, with a lovely texture and ripe tannins. Rich in fruit. Will benefit from further time in the cellar. 17+ points

A special showing of this wine, of which the first vintage was 1996. A captivating nose, redolent of apples, figs and crème caramel. It has a lovely weight and presence on the palate - it is smooth, rich and mouthfilling. Rich apple and fig flavours. Touch of sweetness, but structured and grippy. Quite amazing. I daren't predict a drinking window - I think this style of wine may go on for decades. 17.5+ points

Obviously mature. Slight apply madeirisation on the nose - some oxidation is present. A lovely, elegant texture on the palate, and there is still a backbone of tannin. Rich and rounded, but marred by a little oxidation unfortunately. Still merits a score though. Having tasted this before in September 2002 I'm certain this is just a one-off oxidised bottle. A disappointment considering this came direct from the domaine though.
