2003 Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico

Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more

Winedoctor

, Chris Kissack
November 2005
Made from estate-grown fruit, organically tended since 2003, this is again 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo. Riper, more supple fruit on the nose, but not a huge character. Soft, open, easy-drinking style on the palate, with some pleasant fruit. Plenty of tannin, and low acidity, but that's 2003! An improvement on the wine from purchased fruit, but not memorable otherwise. Short-term drinking. 15 points

November 2005
The same Sangiovese/Canaiolo blend, from estate-grown fruit, the vines aged 25 to 50 years, restricted yields, and two years in French and Austrian oak. This has a good colour, and there are some appealing, nervous black fruits on the nose. Midweight palate, on the lean side, but a nice presence nevertheless, and good flavour. Little sense of tannin, but nicely poised in the mouth. A decent effort from a weaker vintage. Drinking over the next 2-3 years. 15.5+ points

This is 100% Sangiovese which sees twelve months in oak, one third of which is new. This has more depth on the nose than the other wines, with some Sangiovese-style fruit and a nutty nuance. There is a nice presence on the palate, with good substance and a good seam of tannin. This has quite decent persistence through to the finish. Another decent wine, but are these two really the leading wines of the Badia a Coltibuono portfolio? 16+ points

A fresh, open nose, with notes of oranges, very much in an oxidative-toffee-oak style. Very rich in flavour, barley sugar notes, ripe and firm, but with very good acidity. This is an appealing and attractive example of the style. If only the Chiantis were this good. 17 points

A lovely depth of dark, macerated fruit on the nose, still showing the nuttiness of oak. A very impressive although youthful character. Gentle structure on the palate, very supple and silky, with integrating tannins, and a decent presence of fruit. Nice, gentle grip. Really rather good, and will drink very nicely in four to five years time. 16.5+ points

Another single vineyard wine, from the Cartizze hill. Floral, attractively perfumed, with a citrus-mineral character. Very profound, obvious palate, rich and minerally. Not as sweet as I expected. This has good character; drink now. 16.5 points

One of the single vineyard wines, from clay (crede) soils. A blend of 85% Prosecco, 10% Pinot Bianco and 5% Verdiso. Quite open, solid, minerally wine, with a full, similarly obvious palate. A strong, minerally character pervades through to the finish. This is straight up and foursquare, but has good style. 16 points

A blend of 95% Prosecco and 5% Verdiso. Not imported into the UK. A very clean nose, reminiscent of seasalt dashed on rocks, with a lean background of white citrus fruit. Medium bodied on entry, but showing a lean midpalate, with softer acidity than I expected. Nice salt-rock character. Unfussy drinking, best chilled I expect. 15 points

Current release. A blend of thirteen vintages, 100% Prosecco, made in a blended, non-solera fashion. Oranges, minerals, macerated peaches and a smoky richness on the nose. Rich and creamy mouthfeel, quite refreshing despite rather low acidity. Roasted, caramel fruit. This has great length. Very good. 17 points

This is 100% Pinot Nero, made using full Methode Champenois, or metodo classico. A peachy, onion skin hue. Lovely character on the nose, which has rich, leesy, toffee raspberry quality. Full and smoky, with a firm mousse and firm acidity. Very dry. Settles to a less aggressive style through the midpalate. Good. 15.5 points

A pale golden hue, with a fairly fine bead. Sweet biscuit notes on the nose, reflecting the Pinot-dominated (60% PN and 15% PM) assemblage, with evident complexity from the reserve wines. This is always the case with the Special Cuvée, as although the reserve wines account for less than 10% of the blend they include wines up to fifteen years of age. Full, biscuit and apple character with oak tones through the midpalate. Fresh, with a firm mousse. This is a fairly complex, mouth-filling non-vintage cuvée, this bottling showing particularly well. Very good indeed. 17 points

A moderately deep colour here, with a very furry, animalistic, feral nose. Rather full on the palate, with a softly rounded mouthfeel and a nice texture. A little elegance here in terms of style, still with a little tannin too. This needs just a year or so in the cellar to fully integrate, then it will make decent drinking. 16+ points

Again a firmer, fuller style than the corresponding Viña Real from the same vintage. Even broader, and showing a greater spread of fruit and supporting oak. A big, structured, tannin-infused palate, although there is a rounded texture, and a lovely smoky-feral-tobacco complexity to it. Showing lovely notes of maturity, although this has years ahead of it yet. Again a lovely length. 18+ points

In contrast this is 100% Rioja Alta fruit, and it has a markedly different, much paler hue. Yet on the nose it seems more masculine, showing firmer fruit with a biting, fruit rind character, and spicy oak. Quite creamy and textured palate, with a firmer presence of ripe tannins. Much broader style, needing more time to come around I think, 2-3 years at least. Very good again. 16.5+ points

This is 100% Viura. A lemon-infused, barrel-ferment nose, full of spicy, butterscotch oak. The palate is also unsurprisingly very oak dominated, but has a pleasing, clean style. A bit of a meal in a glass, and a chewy one at that. I suspect it may resemble the good-value Monopole of old when the oak has integrated somewhat. 15.5+ points

A fading red hue here, with a pink-orange rim. Macerated forest fruits on the nose, with notes of undergrowth and cherry stones. Full, elegant style on the palate, but a lovely creamy texture with a good presence. Quite a broad wine, still with a firm core of tannin. This is a lovely wine with great potential, as suggested by the gorgeous length. 18+ points

This is made using fruit sourced from Rioja Alavesa. Rather an earthy tinge to the colour, evidence of maturity setting in, compounding the effect of oak ageing. Complex and earthy palate, with notes of undergrowth; this has interest and a good style. Full palate, fairly rich, with a lovely, rounded, seamless character supporting some spiced red fruits. A little bite of tannin beneath the texture gives some backbone. Overall a very nice, reserved, refined style. Will improve over a few years. 16.5+ points

November 2005
A profound, deeply coloured wine. Ripe, complex, nutty, damsony fruit on the nose which hints at an intense concentration. Indeed, this wine has a big, concentrated, creamy style, which coats a core of ripe tannins most adequately. Full, structured style, with appropriate acidity and balance, and so lots of potential. Needs 5-8 years in the cellar I think. 18+ points

Another wine with a lovely depth of colour, and a complex, perfumed nose, still showing the nutty, oak-tinged dark fruits of youth. Ripe and succulent, with ripe, supple tannins, all presented in a medium bodied style. This has a very different character, but maintains wonderful appeal. Great grippy bite near the finish, yet overall a quite seductive presence on the palate. Lovely potential, needs 4-6 years. 17.5+ points

Great colour when poured, still quite definitely red although with a dense, mature element. Lovely nose, still exhibiting some youthful, smoky blackcurrant at first, although this does yield to more mature leather and cedar character. Full, moderately dense on entry, with cedary claret flavours that flow across the palate. Lovely definition and presence, and great typicity. Claret at its most pleasant, and certainly affordable. It has developed very well since last tasted in 2004. Drink over the next 5-8 years. 16.5+ points

A smoky, very mineral character on the nose here. The palate follows on, showing a supple, mineral and smoke, rather forward style. This is quite full on the palate, very characterful, and underpinned by a soft tannic structure. There is a slightly confected edge on the finish which spoils the fun, but otherwise this is good, and suggests that there a good wines if found at the right price from this forgotten vintage. 16 points

This is much more deeply coloured compared to the 1998, with youthful dark fruit and roasted nuts to be found on the nose. On entry, a slightly creamy style is apparent, with a ripe, nutty, rounded flavour and mouthfeel. This is concentrated, and firmly tannic, and yet maintains a supple presence. This is very good indeed, but demands 5-6 years cellaring as a minimum. 17+ points

Another smoky, mineral-laced nose here, this time quite refined and subtle. Pleasing, nicely structured palate on entry, displaying evident stone and mineral edged blackcurrant fruit. Delightful left-bank style here, although still quite firm in the midpalate, but nicely balanced throughout. Needs 3-4 years in the cellar. Demonstrates nicely why this vintage shouldn't always lie in the shadow of 2000. 16.5+ points

A dark, intense, red-black hue. Some volatility at first, which subsides to reveal meaty, garrigue-spiced fruit with a dark, macerated berry character. Soft, and a little out of focus on entry, but it shows some extract and good flavour through the midpalate, although at present also a little disjointed alcohol. This needs another two to three years to integrate and develop, although it will never be great. 15.5+ points

A clean, lemon gold hue. A marvellously open and intensely aromatic nose, loaded with stony mineral character, notes of crushed rocks and perfumed citrus fruit. Fresh, clean and lithe on the palate, with more mineral and citrus character. Nuances of green herbs, a little botrytis-derived honey character and crisp, piercing acidity. Pretty delicate in style, but delightful flavour. Delicious. 17.5+ points
