A good colour. Black fruits on the nose, with a restrained, hard, minerally, stony, gravelly edge that suggests St Estèphe to me. Quite classic. The palate has a full, medium body and sweet, stone and mineral edged fruit. Again quite classic suggesting the 1996 vintage. 16.5 points

The nose here displays mature, sweet fruit. The palate is delightfully and gracefully balanced, with a beautiful integration of tannic structure. It has a firm touch but remains very fluid. Elegant fruit. Finishes well. Very typical of the 1985 vintage. 17.5 points

Youthful but less vibrant colour, quite deep, with a nose of dense, earthy fruit. Well balanced palate, with firm tannins and correct acidity. Nicely balanced by some subtle summer fruits. 15 points

A vibrant red-purple. A lovely nose to this wine, with juicy red-black summer berry fruits, with a sweet, herby, nettly edge. It is rounded and quite full on the palate, with a polyphenol influenced mouthfeel - evidence of those barrels. Strong acidity, balanced by good fruit. Some tannin in the finish. 15 points

Very pale. A simple, clean, quite neutral nose. Light on the palate, fresh, and balanced with very appropriate acidity. A good foil for seafood. 15 points

A little more colour again. An appealing, floral nose, with hints of acacia and minerals. On the palate it has balance, and elegance too. Still a little tight and structured. This is impressive stuff for the money which will be better in a year or so. 16 points

A little more colour here. Quite different in style to La Forétille. This has a more open, welcoming nose. A little more flashy on the palate, fuller, rounder, with some evidence of oak on the texture. Honey and beeswax flavours. It remains balanced and fresh. Great value. 16 points

A rich, clean colour, very pure and shimmering. The nose offers a floral pureness like that of a Spring morning. The palate is quite simple in terms of flavour, but has a great texture and almost oily mouthfeel. It remains very pure and focused at all times. I think this wine will improve even further over the next year or so. 15.5+ points

Obviously not Bordeaux, as Jurançon is in the south-west of France, but not really a ringer either. A touch of madeirisation on the nose. Pleasant texture and sweetness on entry but dries out from the midpalate onwards. Probably past its best. 13 points

Moderate colour, which is beginning to show a little maturity, with a warm brick-red hue at the rim. The nose takes a couple of hours to really open out, to offer somewhat rustic fruit with a roasted/baked fruit aroma indicative of the hot climate, and reminiscent of the 1990 vintage in Bordeaux. Medium bodied, with an elegant rather than overdone texture. Quite firm with sufficient acidity and slightly woody tannins on the finish. Considerable value for money. 16 points

A pale lemon-gold wine, reflecting the cool climate. Very classic on the nose, which has lean mineral aromas. With time it develops richer notes, although appropriately these are mere nuances, of honeydew melon and butterscotch. Fresh acidity, medium body and a little grip on the palate, with restrained, stylish mineral fruits. As it warms in the glass it develops a more open, warm, flavoursome character on the palate. A classic, ripe Chablis. Lovely. 16.5+ points

Stony, mineral aromas on the nose, with some black fruit and a hint of black olives. Medium body apparent on entry, quite firm structure, with stony fruit flavour. Somewhat stinky and I would say rustic. Seems to have a touch more finesse on the endpalate though, with more black olive flavour. Some tannin still evident on the finish. Overall it has just enough fruit to cope with the structure. 16+ points

Some maturity evident on inspection. On the nose this wine begins to reveal its quality. Roasted black fruits, and roasted herbs, with complex notes of cloves and finely tanned leather. The palate is not quite an iron fist, but it certainly has a velvet glove. It is smooth and richly textured, with an approachable tannic backbone and correct acidity. A finely poised structure, graceful and stylish, almost gliding across the palate. Beautiful flavours. It doesn't seem to have the structure for long ageing but should keep for three years plus. Although I would suggest drinking now! 18 points

Canned peaches on the nose, with a sherbetty nuance. The is a firm, solid affair rather than one of delicate elegance. It is quite dry, and peachy, although with rather less fruit than suggested by the nose. Theres a little grip and a stern, gritty finish. Will certainly improve in the cellar for two to three years. 15.5+ points

A lovely colour, and a fresh, feminine, perfumed nose, laden with spicy, peppery cherry fruit. Quite full and structured on the palate, with balanced acidity. Fresh, vibrant, strawberry and cherry fruit. This is elegant, structured stuff. 15.5 points

A mature, pale, browning hue. The nose is obviously very mature, with sweet, claretty notes. On the palate it is somewhat dried out. There is some oxidation and a short finish. Nevertheless it is not undrinkable and for a thirty year old Côtes de Bourg I think it has held up very well. 14 points

A mature, smoky, slightly stewed/roasted fruit nose, with a biscuity edge. It is soft, round and a touch sweet on the palate. Medium bodied. Not a lot of charm. Fully integrated tannins and certainly ready to drink. Red and black fruit flavours. Good length. That roasted character suggests 1990. 17.5 points

The second wine of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. A wonderful youthful colour. A rich nose, full of red and black fruits and black olives, with a perfumed edge. Medium bodied and elegant on the palate. There is a touch of power though. Good sweet fruit, and a little tannin. Needs another year or two but then should be ready. 17+ points

From half-bottles. The most mature colour of the four wines tasted gives some clue as to the age. The nose is classic although quite dense. It starts off with a touch of sweet fruits and some notes of oak, but opens out to reveal vegetal notes of arriving maturity. On the palate it is rounded, a touch grippy, with a little unresolved tannin, although overall it has a loose, open-knit feel to it. Low to moderate acidity. At present seems poorly integrated and awkward, muddy is a description that comes to mind, like some other 1995s I have tasted recently. 16+ points

A youthful hue. I thought this an open, expressive wine, with exotic notes of black olive and Asian spices, although others were less taken. More tannin than the 1995 on the palate, but matched by a good texture, medium body, firm sweet fruit and correct acidity. The tannins win on the finish though. A lovely, altogether wine which needs time in the cellar. 17.5+ points

From half-bottles. This wine demonstrated a little maturity in colour. Like the 1996 this wine displays some exotic black olive notes, with sweet black fruit, but with a more elegant air. The palate is rounded, very dry, with great structure in evidence. Although it has just a little less tannin than the 1996 (just), with a hard character typical of St Estèphe, this is balanced out by a sweet wealth of fruit. This youthful wine has a good length and potential. 16.5+ points

A new label and matching capsule for the 2000 vintage. This is a dense, glossy, youthful looking wine, with a very expressive nose, throwing out aromas of coffee, chocolate, exotic spices and sweet fruit pastilles. This all says 2000 to me. The palate is full, sweet and rich. There is a good structure although the tannins do not dominate, and only make a strong showing on the finish. It is big, dense, and packed with fruit and creamy texture, although still with a St Estèphe hardness. Balanced. 17.5+ points

A lovely dark colour. Some sweet, slightly confected (perhaps suggesting carbonic maceration) character on the nose. This is not a criticism though, as there's plenty of roasted herb character, rich black fruits and smouldering charcoal to carry it along. A lovely meaty palate, with plenty of rich, chocolate-edged fruit. Savoury, charcoal, raspberry and loganberry flavour. Elegant yet structured. A ripe tannic backbone. This is a joy to drink. 17+ points

A pale golden hue. It has a lovely, complex nose, initially showing wet stones, golden fruits and lemon pastry, but later a greater depth of flavour with pineapple and marzipan. On the palate it is fresh and medium bodied, with a bitter twist behind the stony, mineral-laden fruit. My only concern is that it seems a little dilute, but with air in the glass - and I suspect time in the bottle - it fleshes out. With time, in fact, it shows a good texture, and is nicely balanced. Plenty of spice and an almost creamy lemon pie note on the finish. Approachable now, but really needs another year or two. 17 points

Not tasted blind as this was the first of two wines I brought along. I've never really enjoyed this wine, from what I maintain is (generalising) a disappointing vintage. Showing advanced maturity on inspection. Evolved nose, with unusual ripe banana and confected notes. Seems OK on entry, but falls away on the midpalate. Medium bodied, charmless tannins, and hollow. Another bottle (my last!) - which was in fact a little less evolved and better for it - I took to another tasting group a few weeks later and had them all thinking it was Italian (the unbalanced acidity) and commenting on strange custard aromas. Clearly an "unusual" wine. 13 points
