An unusual nose here, all cherry and intense smokiness at first, transforming into notes of burnt fruit and smouldering wood. Dry on the palate, very gamey and mature, with more of that burnt character coming through. Charcoaly. Decent, although shows a lot of winemaking I think. I don't think I like it very much, although there is nothing terribly wrong with it, but I think it might appeal to some. 14 points

Deep, slightly meaty aroma, complex, with notes of slightly baked fruit. Elegant, perfumed, herby, with ripe, firm, grainy tannins. Firm acidic structure although a little baked character to the fruit here. Nice, traditionally structured style though. Good. 16+ points

An appealing, rather crisp, red fruit nose here, with some rather obvious sweet oak showing alongside. A well composed, somewhat traditional structure, with some admittedly rather ripe, supple tannins which sit well with the fruit, which has a light feel to it. Moderate acidity. This should age well, but I much prefer the Clerc-Milon from this stable. 16+ points

Blood oranges, something I seem to find in every vintage of Bastor! Rather lifted and certainly fresh on the nose. Light in style on the palate though, fresh and lean, crisp acidity, peppery. Firmly styled, no seductive fat here. Merely good. 15 points

An expressive, fruit-laden nose, with a seductive note of plum. This has a really good depth. Lovely, quite ripe, a little grippy, but the tannins nicely melded with some lovely, svelte, dark fruit. This has very good freshness and fine style. 17 points

A nose of peppered raspberries and blackberries, with plums too, in a very fresh, crisp style which I find attractive. Midweight, elegant, with earthy black fruit flavour and a smoky edge. Tannins are appropriate, well covered by fruit, giving a good grip, but with a balanced, attractive style. A short finish. 16 points

An exotic nose of nutty oak and dark fruit presented in a very distinctive style. The palate has plenty of attractively presented fruit carried along by a creamy, rounded, softly caressing style. Ripe tannins, correct acidity, not a great impact but very nicely assembled though. 16.5+ points

An attractive lemon gold. An interesting nose, quite herbal, firm, precise with a crisp citrussy mineral and quinine infused character. Full and rich, with a firm alcohol on the palate, although quite a delicate, reserved, almost lean texture. Fresh, certainly dry, with a sappy, green finish. Quite a length too, with a dry, savoury character. Good, although rather stern compared to the more welcoming, sugar-endowed styles. Nevertheless good - I quickly worked my way through two bottles, with a little help from some friends. 16+ points

Another bottle just a few weeks on from the last. Appearance as previous, but with a good nose, all lemony-chalky-herby. Lovely freshness, although firm and nicely structured on the palate, with a slightly more obvious vinosity that goes with maturity in Chablis showing on the endpalate compared to last time. Getting better with every bottle, and should be absolutely fine in a year or maybe two, with plenty of drinking time thereafter, I suspect. 16.5+ points

This is very grassy on the nose, with plenty of nettly, green pepper aromas; obviously the Sauvignon Blanc is dominating the wine at present, although I believe the proportions are roughly equal. Lacks great impact on the palate, but is quite fresh with decent acidity. Nettly flavour, like the nose. Good. 15 points

This has a highly perfumed, minerally nose, and on the palate it has a very nice composition. Fine grained tannins, elegant, balanced with fine fruit and rather crisp. light-footed acidity. There is freshness in abundance. This has a distinctive style which can also be found in the more impressive 2005 vintage and is distinctively Branaire-Ducru. Very good potential here. 17+ points

Slightly muted nose, but still displaying a good amount of fruit and perfume. On the palate a wall of tannin; there is good, ripe fruit and texture but it is a little overwhelmed by the structure. But doesn't feel stretched or over-extracted. This will need plenty of cellar time. (16-17+) points

This has a lovely, seductive, svelte nose of plummy fruit presented in a ripe, dark, velvety manner, complicated by notes of pepper and spice. Finely structured palate, with a delightful undercurrent of velutinous tannins, and a precise balance of flavour, texture and acidity. Very elegantly styled, with undeniable finesse. Truly excellent. I think this has shown very good positive development over the last year. 18+ points

A nose typical of the vintage, with a firm, deep presence of confit plum and cherry fruits. Nevertheless rather cool and detracted on entry, with a little note of freshness on the palate, and good varietally correct plum and fruitcake notes. There is a svelte texture and elegant poise which copes well with the counterpoint of the usually firm wall of tannin. I think this is really impressive for the vintage. 17+ points

A more seductive style on the nose here, with appealing, plump, plum and blackberry aromas. Rather plush on the palate, with a cushion of fruit over ripe tannins and some fresh acids. Rather svelte in style, welcoming, but with good grip beneath. Balanced and structured, this is fine. 17+ points

Even deeper, even plusher in style. Dark plum fruit, with some nutty oak in harmony, but with a lifted vibrancy, an almost perfumed character. Very attractive. There is elegance on the palate, a reserved style, not over-extracted, just a firm, youthful grip, but with appropriate fruit and texture. Red fruits on the finish, and a good length. Very good. 17.5+ points

Unlike the white Carbonnieux this is not at all closed; it has a vibrant red fruit character, a melange of gravelly, raspberry notes. Firm, solidly put together wine, perhaps a little coarse, showing a firm, tannic structure. Seems well extracted. Has a certain rustic appeal. Good. 15.5+ points

This is rather closed on the nose today, and it expresses little other than a faint nettly-mineral character. It has a very attractive palate though, showing a limpid freshness with fine acidity and good balance. Well structured, but unsurprisingly with very muted flavours at present, but these will open out with time. Very good potential. (15.5-16.) points

Chosen with the thought it might be a crowd-pleaser, and indeed some did like it. To me this deeply coloured wine has an alcoholic, fruit-juicy, cherry-medicinal nose. A big, soft, blowsy impression on entry, with no appreciable acidity. Rounded, unfocused, but with a big tannic kick at the end reflecting the heat of the vintage. Sweet and rather confected overall. Not really my style of wine. Tasted in a backstreet bistro in Barcelona. 13 points

Really seductive fruit and some oak on the nose here. Ripe and svelte style of tannins on the palate, quite a firm structure, but with lots of fruit, flavour and character too. Good, fresh acidity. This is a delight. Another success for Claire Villars. 16.5+ points

This has a dark, floral, gravelly fruit nose, with little notes of sweet blackberries and butter. Full and rounded style on entry, evolving to a gravelly, mineral character through the midpalate. Firm tannins, nicely composed, not at all overdone. Fine, fresh acidity. This has very good potential. 17+ points

As with last years sample of the 2003 this is quite closed, showing little more than a faint crispness. The palate clearly shows that this is built for the cellar; balanced, elegantly textured, sappy but reserved, vaguely nettly through the midpalate but rounding out with a flourish of flavour on the finish. Potentially very good indeed. 17.5+ points

An exotic fruit nose with real depth here, with pickling spice nuances of future complexity, overall a seductive welcome. There are lovely, svelte tannins, beautifully composed, and elegantly styled palate with a crisp acidic structure. This is a real success that will do well in the cellar. 17+ points

This has a very deep, almost meaty nose, certainly showing a huge amount of depth and complexity rather than just primary notes. Lovely style on the palate, again showing great depth and complexity, with soft acidity melded with honey, stone fruit, quince and pineapple, roasted together in a very complete panoply of flavour. Very distinct style in this vintage, huge and really incomparable; there is not a wine here close to this. 18+ points
