1998 Barone Ricasoli Chianti Classico Castello di Brolio

Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more

September 2002
A youthful red colour with a tinge of purple. Wonderful fruit on the nose, with hard elements of smoke and charcoal, and perhaps a touch of rubber. The palate is big and mouthfilling, with almost luscious cherry and strawberry fruit. This is countered by classic acidity, which is fairly prominent, and spicy tannins. The hard edge suggested by the nose continues on the palate. Sweet, fruit acid length. 16.5+ points

A dense, deep red hue. On the nose there is plenty of classic Sangiovese fruit. Immediately apparent acidity on the palate. which confers great freshness to buoy up the lovely depth of ripe, sweet-edged fruit on the palate. Dense, smoky character, with other notes of oak maturation. Although full bodied, and very dry, it seems somewhat lighter, more open-knit, and less tight than the Castello di Brolio Chianti Classico tasted last week. Drinking well now and very enjoyable. 16.5+ points

This has a red-tawny ochre colour. Another gorgeous nose, with a touch of power. Classic style, with gravelly notes. A full, firm rounded texture on the palate. Nicely structured, big and sweet fruit, with a peppery edge. Pauillac style, with some fudge and tobacco notes. 17 points

A deep red-purple hue on inspection. On the nose it has an intense layer of crushed summer fruits, with some pleasing smoky-toasty oak. The palate has a slightly fat, well rounded texture and good weight, with plenty of fruit as the nose suggested. Then comes the surprise - a delicious, charred, bitter streak, and wonderful acidity, which provides a muscular structure for the body and fruit. A lovely package. 16.5 points

This has a fantastic, youthful colour, red with a purple hue. Quite remarkable. Sweet pastille fruit on the nose. Some hard, tarry notes. Big and muscular on the palate, with sweet fruit, good acidity, and tannins close to full integration. This wine will still benefit from a few more years in bottle. 17 points

A fairly deep, garnet red hue. Quite expressive on the nose at first, throwing around dark fruit aromas, but with minutes it closes down, leaving a delightful scent of black olives hiding behind a rubbery mask. Notes of wood polish suggest the presence of some volatile acids. Later some black cherry notes appear. Full bodied on the palate, with good extract, and powerful acidity, with tannins taking a position in the background. Towards the finish the black olive and dark fruit character really builds, with some good fatness. With time real weight and a sweet, smoky character develops, although this remains very much tempered by the acidity. The finish hides an acidic kick. Lovely stuff. 17 points

A fading red hue, a touch tawny at the rim, but with no other sign of age. Grilled meats on the nose, with chalky, smoky, firm berry fruit. There's also a suggestion of volatile acids. The palate is medium bodied, with a sweet, rounded texture, together with some intense, freshly acidic fruit. Lovely, firm tannins, more apparent on the finish, giving great structure. Delicious, stylish stuff, that has come together really well since I last tasted it, and it gets better with every glass. 18 points

This wine has a deep, garnet red colour. The nose has dense, meaty fruit, with nuances of beef extract. This is clearly made in a big, burly style. The palate is similarly big and meaty, with plenty of structure. There is good fruit, and strong acidity providing an underlying Italian note. Overall a medium bodied, firm, masculine mouth feel. 17 points

This has a fairly rich golden colour, and despite the pétillant designation it has quite a coarse bead. This quickly fades, however, leaving just one or two streams of tiny bubbles. There's a good nose, which is classic Chenin Blanc, with a fresh and honeyed (although not sweet), wet wool nose. Bright fruit on the palate, and good freshness. The acidity is prominent. Just a touch bready. 16.5+ points

This has a much more mature, dark red-tawny hue. The nose is unclean, in fact simply awful – green and vegetal, full of stewed broccoli and cabbage. On the palate (yes, I tasted it, although I could not drain the glass) there is in fact a nice texture, and I sense some good fruit behind the dirty flavours that mirror the nose. Soft tannins and correct acidity. This is a great shame, as I have the impression that there is a lovely wine underneath all this.

This wine also has a youthful appearance, vibrant red, with just a tawny rim demonstrating its advancing age. The nose is open and suggests gorgeous, lush, sweet fruit. The palate doesnt disappoint, although it has a classic St Julien mineral and stone character. Medium bordering on full bodied, quite classic in style although quite rich, with acidity on the soft side. Integrated tannins. Lovely. 18.5+ points

The most youthful colour of the two St Emilions, and indeed one of the most youthful appearances of any wine here. Lovely scents on the nose, pure crushed fruit with a floral, violet edge. Toffee, liquorice and cough-candy notes bring up the rear. Medium bodied, with hard, mineral-edge fruit. There are still some spicy tannins and some peppery acidity. The more elegant, floral characteristics show through on the finish. 17.5 points

A deep red hue with a touch of tawny. Absolutely classic on the nose, intense mineral fruit, with some notes of caramel. It still has plenty of fruit, lovely tannins and pepper-like acidity. Elegant, medium bodied, and delicious. Classically styled and structured. A touch more impressive than my last tasting about eighteen months ago. 18.5 points

Like a few other wines tonight this demonstrates its potential even with its colour, which is red cut through with a purple streak of youth. Stylish, classically styled St Julien fruit with a hard, tarry character. There is a sense of a full, sweet richness to it. On the palate it is clear that this firm, tannic, backward wine is still in the ascendant. Firm fruit and balanced acidity provide the potential for future development. 18.5+ points

A rich, amber-gold wine. A very expressive nose, very big, full of fig, orange and marmalade sweetness. Full and rounded on the palate, a touch sweeter than the previous wines. Figs and nuts on the palate. Mouth filling, and balanced. 16 points

A similar amber-gold hue, just slightly deeper, richer and darker. This wine is much more shy on the nose. There are some notes of marmalade, fig and toffee in the background. The palate, however, is pleasing - open and mouthfilling, full and rounded. Plenty of flavour mirroring those aromas found on the nose. Great spice and good acidity. 16.5 points

An amber-gold caramel colour. A wonderful nose, full of coffee, toffee and figs, with a burnt character, and yet a fresh lift. Despite this initial promise the wine is relatively light on the palate, clean with strong acidity. Nicely rounded, and I sense a hint of the flor that once graced this wine. 16 points

This has a lemon-gold colour, a hue slightly deeper than that of the Fino. Accordingly it has a richer, fuller nose, which is more obviously nutty. The palate is big, quite nutty, with a citrus tang. It is still very dry despite the rich, full character. Again, this wine also has prominent spicy acidity on the midpalate. 16 points

Wow - what a colour. With the help of some background light this initially black-looking wine displays gold, amber, red and caramel hues all intertwined. A rich nose, with sweet, scented molasses, and yet you sense this will have balance rather than sticky sweetness. This is indeed the case - the palate has great balance, with acidity, alcohol and sweet molasses fruit all playing a part. Lovely. 18 points

A very pale colour, as Fino is protected from the effects of oxidation by the mat of flor that floats on the surface of the wine. Good flor character on the nose, with some tangy mineral and cashew nut character. Seems quite elegant. On the palate, rounded, very dry and very clean. Good flor, tangy and a spicy note on the midpalate which persists through the finish. 17.5 points

A deep, luscious golden-brown wine. A lovely nose, full of Christmas cake, toffee, treacle and raisin aromas. Plainly a sweet and rich wine. On the palate this is confirmed, and there is a wonderful attack of rich, viscous sweetness, carrying toffee, fig, raisin, caramel and walnut flavours. Unfortunately the wine lacks acidity - producing a cloying mouthfeel, rather than the fresh, acidic cleansing I would hope for. Consequently I can't give this the excellent rating that it would otherwise deserve. 17.5 points

A rich colour, vibrant garnet red with good intensity of hue. Very ripe on the nose, with primary aromas of dark summer berries, predominantly blackcurrants, with some cocoa-rich chocolate and mushroom notes. Quite full on the palate, with a firm, muscular texture, strong acidity and some good tannins. There's lovely, fresh, acidic fruit as well. Overall fairly simple at present, but structured, well balanced and displaying plenty of promise. I have previous vintages of this wine cellared, including the superb 1996. 16.5+ points

From a half bottle, purchased Summer 2002. Perrier-Jouët has had a rebrand recently (perhaps this involved a 'focus group'), and both vintage and NV bottles now bear attractive golden, oval labels. Nevertheless recently I've been working my way through a case of halves which bear the old style label, and demonstrate some maturity. I thought it was about time I posted a tasting note. A very pale wine, with the barest touch of white-gold, and a gentle bead. A lovely nose, with lots of autolytic character, and warm, freshly baked biscuit aromas. Elegance on the palate, which has good acidity, fine flavour and a fresh, slightly firm mousse. Coffee notes. NV Champagnes don't come much better than this. 17 points

A youthful, ruby red-purple hue, with moderate intensity of colour. Bright and sweet cherry fruit on the nose, with plenty of liquorice oak. Although somewhat open-knit it has pleasant weight, good acidity and even some good tannins, which provide some welcome structure. With aeration it takes on a harder mouthfeel, and is the better for it. A chewy edge to the fruit. 14 points
