Introduction

I was fortunate to taste with Jacques Carillon the other week, both the 2010s that I won't post on (let's just say I'm happy to be selling them) and a vertical of Perrieres. I thought these were all really good wines, consistent in both quality and style, but with the character of each vintage showing too. For me, a real testament to great wine-making. And – dare I say it – no overtly oxidised bottles, though the ’99 was just beginning to exhibit some caramel on the finish, so, for me, needs drinking up. I do wonder how many bottles of the '99 were opened before this one though ...

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2009 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Pale straw. Ripe and rich but still elegant, with a touch of spearmint. Rather fatter than the 2010. Very charming mouth entry, but becomes a little blowsy on the mid-palate and the alcohol is noticeable. Quite big and a touch caramelly on the finish. Good for the vinatge, but not to the standard expected of the appelation/price. 3-

  • 2008 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Pale straw. Elegant nose, a touch of elderflower and a green limey edge. Very clean and linear mouth entry; broadens on the mid-palate, but this is lithe and beautiful. Great matiere and a precise, elegant finish. 4+

  • 2006 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Pale straw. Plump, melony nose, quite a bit of apple pie spice too. Green apple fruit, but good body to carry it and those baking spices carrying through on the palate. Open and attractive with a long finish that maintains some sharpness. Drinking well if you like 'em rich. 4-

  • 2005 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Pale straw. Broad nose - lovely developed appley Puligny. Round and succulent in the mouth; lacks the acidity of the younger vintages, but good minerality underneath the fat. Big on the finish - very expansive baking spice and minerality. Not elegant but surprisingly good. 3+

  • 2004 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Pale greenish straw. Cheesy nose of bound sulphur takes a long time to clear. Beneath is a loveley succulent old apple smell (borderline bruised ... so watch out !). Properly developed - the mouth entry has lovely poise, good balance and an undertow of minerality. Big, long finish. Full ready, but with air shows a touch of oxidiation and alcohol. Drink up. 4-

  • 2002 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Medium straw-gold. A little reductive at first, but then lovely ripe pear fruit and still with a line of fraicheur. Plump and lovely in the mouth - a really complete palate. Shows hints of caramel and a really intense mineral undertow on the long finish. Lovely, but again I would drink up. 4

  • 1999 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Quite deep mid-gold. Reductive, rather rubbery edge. Underneath is a soft, generous, perfectly shapely wine. Again ripe pears and a mineral undertow. Really lovely mature fruit, very elegant and a medium length finish that shows a touch of caramel. Drink up 4
