This is becoming one of my favorite producers and this vintage maybe my favorite wine. Opened Friday evening and slow oxed for 24 hours, had half the bottle on Saturday and the second half Sunday. Kept at 55 the entire time but better to drink at 60. The wine is flawless, perfect balance, elegance, and harmony. Everything you expect from a great Bordeaux.

This wine continues to fire on all cylinders. Right from the start it showed strong with lots of wonderful tertiary aromas, a strong, fresh fruit core, an impeccable structure and perfect balance. When consumed 2 hours later in a restaurant it showed less complex and much younger. Still, it has all components of a great wine; the complexity, the precision, the elegance, freshness and a superb balance. 95pts for this bottle (rated up to 97pts in the past).

Decanting: Double decanted for 30 minutes, consumed two hours later. Got younger with air. This vintages usually doesn’t need much air.

Deeply coloured, red rim.
Beautifully fragrant, cassis graphite and a hint of forest.
Silky smooth, weightless, glides across then bites with well balanced acid and super fine tannins. Flavours are classic Bordeaux, cassis, graphite, tobacco leaf complexity, a hint of mocha and leather. Delicious drinking but will hold for decades.

Not sure what was up to with us tonight. Bottle was in great shape with base neck fill. A serious chemical note on the nose faded after about an hour. But the palate had a strange VA quality.

1988 Bordeaux Horizontal (Hawksmoor NYC): Having recently enjoyed the 1986 Château Lynch-Bages in a four decades of Bordeaux vertical, I was excited to dive into another example from the 1980s with the 1988 Château Lynch-Bages. This was absolutely drinking younger than I was anticipating, but lacked a 'wow' factor. The nose had a mossy quality to it, made better by hints of blackberries and light baking spices. The palate, though, showed off the youthfulness of this bottle as redcurrants and blackcurrants were omnipresent in the upfront prior to notes of leather, oak and white pepper providing a backbone in the mid-palate. The finish was dominated by sous bois, licorice and herbs, boasting tannins that had yet to settle down. I have one bottle left of 1988 Château Lynch-Bages and I think I'd give it 2-3 years before I revisit it.

Lear garnet with a ruby core. Very clear. Cacophony of dark fruit scents with black blueberries and blackberries and bramble. Sweet blackberries, cinnamon, raspberries on the edges. Has at least three decades of life ahead of it.

93++

Plainly put this is one of my favorite Bordeaux. Have had it multiple times and it’s just an absolute delight every time. On this night it completely outdid a 1990 Latour which we enjoyed over a five hour dinner with my wife side by side at Hotel Bel Air. Hard to believe considering I paid more than double for the bottle of Latour.

Absolutely at the entrance of its drinking prime, the 2005 has gently stepped into the drinking window with just one foot while the other foot is still anchored solidly on the other side, providing structure and age ability. It was 3 hours after the fun had started when the real LB showed up to make a statement with its clear left bank demeanor and its Pauillac feel, shining in graphite and unsmoked tobacco. Really muscular underneath still, with great tug and pull, this has the ability to age and in my opinion, surpass the 2000. A relative bargain in the Bordeaux/Pauillac/2005 world. Drink or HOLD

Bottle in perfect condition, cork pristine. Decanted for three hours. Medium garnet colour, very little sediment. Cherry, black currant, plum, cedar, tobacco, light coffee, light chocolate, spices, graphite, gravelly minerality, and a high-end balsamic vinegar note after further breathing, with fresh acidity, well-integrated tannin, and great persistence. Medium-bodied, balanced, and fresh, with impressive structure. Still firm and restrained, reminding me of many Bordeaux of the 1995 vintage. Holds a lot of promise, but for now the value for money is off. I would love to try this again in ten years! 92(++)

A wine that punches way above its weight…wow! Stacked up side by side with an 82 Mouton, 82 Latour, and an 82 Lafite, I have to say this was barely edged out by the Lafite and Latour. The Lafite carried an elegance that continued to shine as time went on, but the reality is that we were splitting hairs and for the price differential, this is hands down the best wine by a mile. A truly impressive performance.

Cork was wine stained and fell apart upon opening but wine was beautiful underneath. Decanted 2 hrs, nose of black currants, plums cherries, violets, caramel, notes of iron and truffles. Palate came together at the end of decant, smooth with no hard edges, still very plentiful and sweet dark fruit with rounded tannins although this wine can go on for at least 5 more years given their potency, secondary and tertiary aromas of forest floor, truffles, caramel, herbs, old cedar and peppery on the finish which is incredibly long. Outstanding!

The one with Old Bordeaux (Praelum): Quite true to the vintage. By this time we had ascertain this was the 95 vs 96 flight and this was definitely a 1996. Graphite, black soil and dark berries bouquet with a silky and balanced palate with a dense core of fruit and slight residual sweetness - on any other night, this would have been quite a lovely drink but in the company of greats, this stood out as a little lacking.

UGC Bordeaux (Drake Hotel - Chicago IL): Walkaround tasting with the producers. Enticing aromatics are spiced with bold black fruits. Powerful and powerfully long, this is backward today but has a nearly explosive finish that is quite exciting and bodes well for the future, 2036 forward.
