2019 Joseph Phelps Chardonnay Freestone Vineyards Sonoma Coastmore |
4/23/2024 - djhammond Likes this wine: 95 pointsAn excellent New World Chardonnay, which could give top Burgundy domaines a run for their money. Apple, citrus and nougat are prominent, with perfect acidity and balance. This should not be over chilled. As noted last time, the finish does not quite match the rest of the experience, and is a barrier to a higher rating. |

4/20/2024 - markcic Likes this wine: 95 pointsReading the other reviews and tonight was our weekly date night and also prime rib night at my club and knowing I had a case in in my crawl space I decided to try a bottle. Opened and slow ox'd for four hours then put the cork back in and took to the club. The nose was deep fruit with a hint of wood. The palate was dark red fruit, red plums, some currants, tobacco and hints of cedar. The finish was long and full with a touch of spice coming out. It is a very good wine now and should develop more in the future. I have a grandson who was born in 2015 - I will save the magnum that I have for him. It should be perfect in 2036. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

4/21/2024 - Cailles wrote: 95 pointsThis was a highly elegant bottle of Cab with a vibrating red fruit core, spices, an earthy minerality and a touch of herbs. Blind I would have guessed this to be a decade younger, it’s so fresh and lively and with a superb balance. This had a more new world style and feel than many other big names in the 80s, certainly more than my beloved pre-1997 Dominus/Opus bottlings. Still, that balance, the silky texture and complex aromas deserve 95pts. |

4/21/2024 - Capt Cutlass Likes this wine: 91 pointsThis has become quite tightly wound since its early ebullient days. I would recommend a several hour decant or wait another couple of years. Note to me: from 2025, that 10 year mark should be a winner with the beginnings of tertiary evolution. |

Nose of red fruit, but muted and light. Raspberry - maybe stewed - and other cooked berries, pie like, but not sweet. I had super low expectations, but this was nice. Certainly not improving, but if you have these, drink now with confidence. |

4/19/2024 - bestdamncab Likes this wine: 92 pointsJoseph Phelps Vineyards Spring Release Event (Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Napa Valley): Tasted twice today. I have always enjoyed Napa Cabernet Sauvignon from this vintage and this was no exception. Nose of black berry, black cherry, with lots of allspice, and spring flowers, same on the palate, with perfect winery storage this showed very tasty, at peak, but suggest you enjoy soon, reminded me of 1988 Dunn Napa, medium/big body, lovely, flavorful finish, and a flavorful aftertaste of sweet fruit. |

Nose of mint, roasted black berry tarts, black currants, earth, chocolate, and lovely, rich cabernet fruit, same on the palate, big body, fruit forward, smooth, lovely, long finish, and a lovely aftertaste, wonder where the tannins were today (?), guess it needs 8 years to peak. Right after the 2012 Insignia pour this killed it. |

4/18/2024 - Darwine Likes this wine: 96 pointsA beautiful wine with promise of only getting better over time. Took about 45 minutes to open up but the nose was full of dark fruit and very little leather and herbs. The flavors followed with dark plum and blackberry fruit and has a beautiful layered tannin base with some great acid connections giving it a fantastic long finish of that dark fruit. A lovely tasteful wine! Napas finest!! |

4/17/2024 - Buyer and cellar wrote: 96 pointsWas one of the wines of the night at an all mag dinner that included some heavy hitting mags (ie Redigaffi, Ovid Hexameter, Valbuena #5, some high scoring aussie, and others. Some thought it was the WOTN but all agreed it was absolutely in a prime drinking window right now. Lots of mature, rich balanced black fruit, leather, tobacco, chocolate, and earth notes are perfectly rounding out the glass. |

4/13/2024 - Valaprop Likes this wine: 96 pointsExceptional. Enjoyed over dinner at an excellent restaurant (main dishes were pork in a red wine sauce and a strip steak). 30 years in, this wine is fully mature but at least this bottle still had lots of time left. This is a full-bodied wine, with gorgeous fruit, great structure, and a wonderful long finish. One of the best California reds I have had in quite some time. While this is unmistakably a California wine, it has complexity, structure and nuance -- it's not an OTT "fruit bomb". I have had many bottles of the 1999 Insignia over the years -- I thought this was even better and doesn't seem even close to decline. |
