2002 Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Hengst

Alsace Grand Cru Gewürztraminer more

On the nose, apricot, raisin, mineral and dried figs.
On the palate, Bitter but in the background you have the rainbow of honey, raisin, mango, pears and some other c-vitamins.

Same as previous but without the alcohol heat. Now a brilliant wine.

A delightful suggestion at a fine restaurant that is excellent for early drinking and enjoyment with warm weather meals. That is not to suggest that this is not a serious wine, but rather that fine breeding, a cooperative vintage and a willingness to sacrifice some the long-term complexity all lead to a very enjoyable selection.

To be sure, this is not 100% on the finish, but nicely textured and mostly balanced throughout. Th wine opens with some brighter Gevrey red fruit--some strawberry, lingonberry and cherry-- then goes through an most Chambolle-like darkening mid palate--rounder, rich for a young, lighter wine, and the finishes with a bit too much acidity, with a fine end to the path. It is, however, precisely the slightly higher acidity of this wine as opposed to some of the lusher early drinking 2012s, that gives it a special enjoyment now.

Lovely saline character; colour slightly oranging, slightly oxidative flavours. Decent length though not particularly deep. Unlikely to improve.

Really pleasant wine. 100% merlot. The fruit shines through, but is not overtly sweet as some US merlots can be. It has berry flavor with an edge of tobacco. The body is in between light and medium. Clearly does not have a lot of complexity, but one cannot expect much in the sub $15 range. Overall nice QPR and an easy week day drinker.

I really can't see how this bottle has an 88.6. For a 19 year old beauty it was flowing with fruit. It was silky with a medium body and boasted notes of cherry, olives and terrafirma. I will be replacing this bottle today. No questions asked. At this price point it would be irresponsible not to buy another.

Clean and poised, good fruit expression, straddling the right balance between juicy red berries and Provençal herbs. Will improve. My only quibble is with the price tag.

BYO - Erik: What a treat to try this wine.
As soon as it hits the palate it is clear that it a very serious wine. There is plenty of fruit and sweetness left but also a still piercing acidity that really lift the wine to a special level.
Great balance and overall structure. Clearly a wine that can keep for a very long time.

BYO - Erik: A real treat to try this wine. Lots of depth and personality. Slight touch of oxidation, but not as a defective. More like a style.
It did show the vintage very well, with a good fruit depth but still with a sufficient amount of acidity to make a wonderful wine.
It was however still very young and it would something that could age for a lot longer if needed. It does taste really nice at the moment.

This was right up there for most unpleasant wine of the year. The best analogy I can think of is battery acid because there was nothing there except acid. There was no fruit, no minerality, nothing herbal or really any flavor at all, just lots and lots of acid. There is no reason to drink this wine. have water instead - just as much flavor and easier on the stomach.

A very welcoming nose of sweet fruits and chestnuts, reminds me that not enough bottles of Riesling are given time to age and develop. Freshness still abound after 14 years. A lovely drink.

A huge paradigm changing experience, to find a young 'simple' village wine pouring out copious complex flavours of hay, straw, moss, lime, honey, lychee sorbet and apricot tarts. A pale golden hue also didnt give away how much depth this youngster had attained. Superb. Not sure if it will develop further but at this quality it is possible....then again why wait ?
