Dark ruby red in color. Great nose with a nice mix of clove, cinnamon, black cherry, watermelon; good amount of earth and a hint of funk to begiin. Great juicy acidity on the palate, which leans darker red fruits, but shows some earth as well. A tiny bit of structure on the finish, which has a nice touch of bitterness. Excellent for the price.

PopnPour, tasted over 2 hrs
-opaque dark red no bricking
-pleasant meaty dark fruit spice and scorched earth
-low acidity gives it a sense of flabbiness, still some sweet dark fruit remnants and med chalky tannins, finishes with noticeable heat and a Port-like pruney residue
-very typical 2007 S. Rhone, while there are still some tannins to shed doubt this will improve as it may hold little charm after the fading fruit is gone

Second bottle of two. This one was exceptionally tight for about 90 minutes after a gentle decant, despite plenty of swirling. There was also big, chunky sediment in the bottom of this bottle. It eventually opened up to a mixture of sweet raspberries and vanilla, but that was only at the end of the meal. Be safe; decant early. "Very good," 87/100.

As a side note, I do not recommend cooking with this wine. I used this in a recipe for which I typically grab a Pinot noir in the same price range, and the sauce came out smelling a bit like dishwater.

The Krug of grower champagnes. Rich, fruity, yet fresh. Lovely bouquet which will only get better with age.

This is a great wine. Bright tart cherries, licorice, herbs, underbrush. Solid, four-square and totally unctuous. Very Nuits. This keeps calling you back from more. I have always been impressed with quality of winemaking at Dm Tardy. I have not regretted buying so heavily in '04. I have found the vast majority of these anything but green. Should have bought more!

This was very nice, and much better than the '11 Fevre Preuses Grand Cru that I had last week in Chianti. Begins with a hint of reduction/match stick that eventually blows off. The palate is big, typical Fevre assertiveness, with lots of bright white and clear fruits, lots of citrus and a rather strong bitter fennel note. Lots of energy. This is especially good for the vintage, but I would drink it young.

Soft, lush, smooth and creamy, but also no longer ripe and with a somewhat dried-out fruit character. Nice, but certainly not special. Unlike other tasters, I do not see any upside for this wine.

Last glass from half-bottle opened 24 hours earlier. Smooth, balanced. and elegant. Light to medium bodied with moderately long finish. So very good. Wait two to three years more on these halves. Full bottles should drink best in 2019-2023.

1986 Château Margaux

Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/29/2015 - mk05 Likes this wine: 95 points

I'm a sucker for Margaux, and I can find great A grade Margaux for around $30-50, so it's tough to give higher grade given the price.

Nevertheless, this is a great bottle of wine that is finally drinking well. When it was younger, I remember friends telling me that it swirled around the glass like Robitussin and tasted like moth balls. Now, it is rather beautiful and tells a wonderful story as it unwinds in the bottle over the hours it is drank. Not in danger of turning, but it is really nice right now.

1986 Château Lafite Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/27/2015 - mk05 Likes this wine: 98 points

Lafite, as with all Premier Cru, is great in that the savoir faire keeps the wine structure and style very constant YoY. However, when it is a good year, you get to taste the fruit along with the philosophy of the chateau and structure. 1986 was just that.

I disagree that this tastes like a Burgundy. This is a classic Cabernet-driven Bordeaux. Fantastic with a full-bodied Partagas.

Yellow. Usual pear tones. Not a particularly austere or dry Sec; curiously, at once, only average acidity yet a sharp, grapefruit note at the end. Some soil on the finish as well. This lacks verve, concentration, and texture. Not a memorable result for this typically stellar cuvee.

Feels more fuller bodied than the 2013, and I must confess a tiny bit more conventional SB at first approach on the nose. Still gains steam with air, becoming more pungent, but never feels airy. Still, we gladly finished it, but it lacks the elegance (for now? I think for this vintage) that swept me off my feet in the 2013.

Somewhat muted nose that opened up after 30 min, revealing tropical notes, mostly lemon and pineapple and honey. Those taste was like a collision of a Meyer lemon pie with a pineapple and honey smoothie, but with racy aciditity to balance the sweetness. The higher alcohol (15.5%) leaves a long finish, if not a bit warm. A delight! The aroma and flavors change dramatically as this wine warms so pay attention the serving temp.

It was hot in Gatlinburg today. Brought this along and man did it hit the spot after a hot day. Refreshing, with lime and honey notes yet very dry. Not the most sophisticated bubbles or the most complex palate but perfect for today.
