2008 Foxen Syrah Tinaquaic

Santa Maria Valley more

It's a bit tight on uncorking, but there's some olive, earthiness, some leather and dark fruits and a bit of licorice in the finish. This will need some breathing to open up a bit. Saving some for a second night to see what happens. 2nd night shows that it's still tight and a bit bitey hot on the palette up front. The last glass showed some balance but overall this is not a great Syrah unless you like it really rustic and with heavy foods...deducting 2 points. I don't think this will get better with any more age.

Fantastica! Smooth wine with a vanilla tint. Perfectly balanced. Decanted for almost 2 hrs before drinking. Went great with a shsihkabob. The wine was surrounded by an zento amarone and an older but not as smooth cab. There something great about this wine the way it just flows. Still have some more.

Smooth, clean, elegant taste very natural with soft tannins with no heat despite a 14.4% alc. with just enough spice to make this an excellent all around wine; purchased at the McCay cellars, and served today during the 4th of July festivities with grilled food - sipped very well on its own and with various tasty delughts.

Hot and tight on pop and pour, but opened up nicely in 30 - 60 minutes. Nose of black fruit and spice. The volume is turned up clear across the palate, boldly sweet and tart with red and black stone fruit, raw and stewed. Long, spicy, sticky finish, just a few silty tannins. Nicely engineered in a tough drought year, I hardly fell in love with the bottle but it has the quality you'd expect with the Ridge name. Bought it on sale for 20 bucks and it seemed pretty reasonable, would have been less enamored of it at $30.

This is a great pinot in the making; still showing a bit too primary to be really good. The nose is exploding with red fruits, black raspberry, bing cherry, cranberry, and hints of strawberry. There are also hints of floral notes and mineral scents, but they are most overwhelmed by the fruit. The palate is ripe, super intense with red fruit flavors, but has beautiful acidity and incredibly soft, but present tannin. I think in 8-10 years this wine is going to be stunning. Drink the 10s and 11s for now and let this rest.

Shows considerable improvement over the last bottle opened (July 2014). The prior bottle was very tight, tannic and not in balance, but none of this was surprising for a wine so young. Given time, I saw a good amount of potential in it (and scored it more on that potential) and have now been fully rewarded. Rose and intense blackfruit on the nose. Somewhere between medium and full bodied with great richness and density. Very pretty black raspberry and black cherry flavors with very good balancing acidity throughout. There's a lot of fruit here, but it never goes over the top. Much smoother and more integrated than I remember from last July, but with enough structure to suggest that this wine should continue to improve with peak still to come.
