The color is getting dark (a light brown), but the palate is still lively and fresh, with mature flavors reminding me of apricot, sour orange, burnt sugar, spices, and ginger. The sweetness, though, is not particularly pronounced. This is probably on the downslope, but it seems to be a rather graceful descent into senescence. It's packed with ripe tropical fruit, those fiery spicy notes of Rieslaner (and the slight rough phenolic texture I usually associate with it), layers of botrytised honey and caramelly sweetness, and the whole package is just spectacular - intensely rich and sweet, yet feeling absolutely electric and shockingly light on its feet. AP number #01 15. 750 ml bottle. Consumed over two days. Each half of the bottle was decanted separately per evening and stored in the decanter during the evening of consumption. Pale golden/greenish color. Delicate, sweet and fresh aromas of candied pears, brioche, ripe lemons, bicycle shop, white flowers and minerals. Refreshing, sweet and very powerful flavors of candied pears, ripe lemon, petroleum, yogurt, brioche, white flowers and minerals. Semi-sweet. Medium body. Medium+ acidity. Excellent balance. Very good structure. Good complexity. Excellent concentration. Very intense. Pure. Airy. Rich. Very long finish with lemon and minerals. Day one: An extremely enjoyable Auslese. A liquid version of a summer day at Capri or Hvar. Refreshing, concentrated, airy and intense. More than enough acidity to balance the sweetness. Performs best fridge cold. Improves with air. Excellent with Thai food (green curry with shrimps). 10 years old? No signs of age here, can probably last for an eternity in anyone’s cellar. Most of the acidity is gone and the sweetness hides what remains of rather unidimensional flavors. Addendum: last glass drunk on its own one day later shows a bit more precise character. There IS a hint of acidity left and I can imagine how this might have been a bit more impressive at a young age, with more acidity. [the whiff of petrol and high acidity point to youngish Riesling, and the concentration and sweetness to a late-harvest one. that narrows it down to Alsace, Austria and Germany. the low AbV takes Alsace out, and in combination with the filigree, Austria is also eliminated. that leaves Germany, and it's clearly in the Prädikatswein quality tier. no obvious botrytis notes rule out BA level, and the concentration seems to rule out Spätlese… leaving Auslese, and likely from the Mosel. the subtle delineation of flavours also point to a developing wine… which it is!].
