2009 Château Haut-Bergey

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/29/2015 - Francophile1 Likes this wine: 91 points

I prefer this better than the 2008 vintage. Typical of the '09 vintage... Densely packed with rich black fruit, but laced with mineral, forest floor, cedar, and a new world chocolate / espresso finish. A great blend of the old and new world. Will be much better 10 years from now.

Good wine with a classic Bordeaux expression... Cassis, cigar box, tobacco, etc. If blind, I would have thought it was from St. Julien. Wish it had a little more stuffing and fruit like the 2009 vintage. A little leaner than I prefer...

I have always thought that the 99s were underrated wines and many of them, I suspect, were drunk prematurely on those grounds. This is a beautifully mature wine full of Pessac soft, ripe, red fruits, sweet tobacco, and smokey minerality. The oak is fully integrated. A little nutty. Not the most complex wine but a complete package that delivers for the price. Drunk from the sommelier series.

Noch etwas schüchterne feingliedrige Nase. Am Gaumen überraschend streng und fast schon aristokratisch herablassend. Die eigentlichen Aromen wirken hingegen sehr exotisch.
Pretty good stuff ;-)

PnP. This has reached full maturity with secondary flavors being predominant at this point. Not much fruit as this is primarily composed of cedar, dried herbs, and tobacco. Somewhat drying tannins remain. The first bottle of a case, I left these too long.

Day 2 - I hope the comments about this being in a dumb phase hold true, but I have my doubts. This was flat as can be after storage in the refrigerator. Secondary notes remain but the fruit is lacking and there is no finish on this at all. Score 85.

As I noted with the 2009, I don't think that wine will go beyond 12-15 years and I'm starting to think that about this wine.

This is not the 2000 Haut Bergey.

Found the nose quite closed, but the palate - full bodied+, with firm, grippy tannins. An 'old style Bordeaux', earthy and delicious.

Virtually identical TN to the one date 8/10/2014. What a beautiful wine. It's turning more and more elegant and silky with age. Regularly one of the great values of Bordeaux.

Dark red through and through, though clumping sendiment showing signs of age; dried cherry, wet forest floor, baking spice, tobacco on the nose; on the palate the flavors are muted and underripe, cedar and earthy flavors are coming through.

Deep crimson in the glass, on the nose it shows concentrated notes of black fruits, coffee been, chocolate, green bell pepper, and vanilla, medium (+) intensity on the nose. On the palate it's full bodied, showing same notes as on the nose, with a lot of sweetness and vanilla in the finish. Medium tannins and acidity. Moderate lenght. An easy drinking style that will please a broad audience without being inspiring, drink now or over the next 5-6 years.

A deep, dark red. No bricking. Graphite on the nose with a hint of crushed roses. Pleasant drinking, if a bit simple. Was appreciated by the group for what it is - a nicely aged Bordeaux that one drinks at the office pantry whilst waiting for the night shift to start.

The nose was pretty earthy and had a slightly bitter/sourish unripe fruit aroma. The palate still had quite thick, heavy tannins and needs to be decanted. There was some leather and muskiness with fading berries. The finish was medium with a slight sourish/tangy aftertaste. Quite a pleasant wine but is really in need of food to go with.

Revisiting Graves (Vinexpo, Bordeaux): I am wondering about the sample here. In April, I really liked the white, as exuding ripe fruit with a creamy and rich texture but with red apple like acidity that lends lift on the medium plus finish. This time, the barrel sample seemed more alcoholic, headier, with some notes of evolution. Odd. Judgment reserved.

Revisiting Graves (Vinexpo, Bordeaux): Once again, here we have a more modern style, which readers can score higher if they like it. Yes, there is pleasing richness and even dark fruit aspects that match the acidity of the vintage. It is not so much a certain headiness from the alcohol that bugs me, but rather the somewhat drying finish and sore gums derived from what seem to be oak-derived tannins, already being extracted in barrel at this early stage.

Displaying a lightness in color, there is a mature, softness to the dark berries, with a perfume of earth, cherries and fresh herbs that feel round and soft in the berry, filled finish. This is not a wine to hold for further aging.

Quite austere to begin with, but developes some sweetness after being opened for an hour or so. Not quite as good on the 2nd day - less sweetness and more ashen, but still quite attractive.

2 bottles tasted. This is an overextracted, out of balance Graves. This Chateau is trying to do too much with low quality fruit and questionable terroir.

Improved with 30 minutes of air. Nice rich ruby color, some subtle lightening of the edges. Really interesting profile with this wine. Had the typical Pessac elements, with really dark fruits, some smokiness, soil, herbs, and fresh minerals. Also had lots of coffee and floral notes, reminiscent of a Margaux at times. Medium-bodied, with very fine tannins. Medium acidity. There is enough fruit to keep this going for awhile longer, but perhaps the structure won't provide serious longevity. For now, this is a fairly elegant wine that seems well-balanced at this point. At least a few years left at this nice stage.
