2014 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier

Canberra District Shiraz Blend, Syrah more

This bottle showed a lot of development - the joyous floral notes of the Viognier are gone, leaving some black cherry, prune, raspberry jam, leather, tobacco and sage. It has an elegance but this bottle was close to past it.

Roast beef and blackberries. Yum. 91 or 92. I’d be drinking any remaining bottles of this inside the next year or two, wouldn’t wait the 20 from vintage suggested on the label.

A bit on the fence with this one. I wanted to like it more given I loved it on release but on this showing it was firmly in the “nice red wine” camp for me. Clearly well made and no obvious faults. White pepper, cherries and all the hallmarks of Clonakilla SV but no real zing. Just felt a bit muted and uninspiring, despite the obvious quality. Drunk over the course of an afternoon on the back of a lazy lunch (gotta love Easter Monday) so it had plenty of opportunity to evolve in the glass. Might need to re-evaluate my drinking window on these ones- I absolutely love them close to release but my experience with extended cellaring time has been hit-and-miss.

Ruby red with a hint of brick on the rim, pale, unfiltered. Initially a little reticent, blossoming to a pronounced nose of red currant, pomegranate, black cherry and blackberry fruit, very sweet smelling, almost confected. White pepper, fennel seed, black filter coffee. Very complex. Medium acid, tannins like silk; rhubarb and red currant with some darker brambles on the palate, but more savoury than the nose. Very elegant, well balanced, extremely delicious.

Blackberry, plums. Little mint, deli meats. Medium weight, enough length. Good stuff. 91 or 92. Was going to apologise for the brevity, have a slight cold, but really what more do you need to know?

In celebration of Sweden’s NATO ascension 🇸🇪

👃 Plum liqueur, white pepper, prosciutto crudo and a hint of volatile acidity

👅 Medium-bodied (ABV 14%) with silky tannins, fresh acidity (medium) and a palate of blueberry sorbet. Long sorbet like finish.

👀 Purple

📝 High intensity on the nose and on the palate. This wine is in a very good place right now. For you Swedes - I found this wine & vintage in Systembolagets beställningssortiment för 279 kr ($27). I will definitely order a few more bottles.

Roast beef pan juices, blackberry, pepper, spice, still the violets of youth are there and then not. Steely threads of tannins, outstanding balance and length. Superb. I’ve sometimes wondered if it’s better to drink these Clonakilla SVs young as they are so good at that stage, but this bottle is an argument for being patient.

It wasn’t their best season. I probably made the mistake of keeping it too long. It was medium body with a moderately long palate. Not what I come to expect from a Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier. Enjoyable just the same

Bob's cellar. Nice garnet red, no evident bricking. Swirls of sharp cassis pinched with redcurrant, spicy menthol, twist of black cherry nose. A little dryness on opening tasting, but this is washed away by delicious red berries, cassis and damson, peppery spice, and a nicely done dash of tannic grip. With some air, crunchy red fruit comes through, funky forest floor. Really good.

Quite evolved wine.
Medium garnet in color.
Nose is quite intense, showing strong licorice, balsamic, some iron, dried meat and slight berries aromas.
Medium to full body, dusty tannins still present but give structure, medium acidity level that keeps it refreshing. Iron, dried meat, dried berries, licorice flavours. Tannins slightly drying and some bitterness at the end.
Good length. Overall good developed cool climate shiraz but time to drink up.

Ripe red berries, ripe black cherry, eucalyptus, rubber, forest floor, dirt and mint on the nose. Almost smells like the sole of a shoe in a great way, as well as showing lots of juicy red fruit. Medium + intensity of aromas. The palate is similarily a good mix of primary and secondary flavors. It's pretty consistent with the aromas, other than adding a note of ripe apricot. (maybe from the Viognier?) Overall very deep and complex, with a high intensity of flavors.

Medium + body with medium + acid and medium - tannins. The Viognier's presence is felt in the sturcture of this for sure. Still developing, though delicious now. Recommend holding it for 2-3 more years, as I think it will change for the better.

Huge nose of fresh cracked pepper, sage, wintergreen, anise, Asian spice box, roasting meat and black cherry. Full-bodied and extremely forward, this is potent and lasting. Loads of blueberry, black cherry and berry, cassis, white and black pepper as well as some garden herbs, led by sage. This wine is huge, but has a semblance of balance with soft but evident tannins and somewhat high acidity. Very well made, this should age for 15+ years but most will likely prefer now. 95

A superb bottle taken to Melbourne to taste with The Truth and Mr Aldo, a couple of tasting glasses poured for Callum of Chiara Wine Bar to return the favour for excellent wine advice (and a generous free sample of a classy Attwoods’s Chardonnay from Mt Macedon).

Right in the cool climate ‘Syrah’, cooler vintage groove. Mellow plums, cherries and poached raspberries. Infused with savoury tones - subtle bacon streaks, dried herbs, tanned leather, spices. Just lovely.

Possibly better palate. Gone are the edges seen (supposedly) last year. Rounded, smooth - kid glove suppleness - with depth and length. Achieves its maker’s aim to make ‘Shiraz with a warm heart’. It possesses ‘glow’. Similar subtle complex notes flow from the nose. Light and shade.

A reminder of how context can alter perceptions. And that final judgement is rarely reached, with wine at least, if not the superiority of the radish to the rose. Fully mature but in a sweet spot.

In the mature (but not twilight, yet) zone. Colour foretells much. Translucent light brick rim before browning/brick, then dark red core.

The nose instantly summons a learned judge’s comment at the Clonakilla 50th anniversary of the 2010. ‘Slightly vegetative Cote Rotie’, with ashy edges, charcuterie, tanned leather, then more New World cherry and plum, fennel seed too.

Alluring nose but the palate consummates the liaison. Suave and silky, just a touch of grip to keep things interesting with chargrilled sirloin and other meaty thingies. Lovely, slinky and long. Better than good intensity, a long bow finish, with leathery and aniseed traces to give it a lick of complexity. The palate’s fresher than the nose suggests.

I’m a fan of this Cka vintage. There are richer, more potent years. But I’d trade some of that for the silky wiles of the 2010s. Ready to roll.

2008 Clonakilla Syrah

Canberra District more

2/9/2024 - Dr S Likes this wine: 94 points

A compelling Syrah, for the mind, soul and tummy. It may not be the best Cka Syrah (09, 15, 16 and 19, perhaps 18 too, vie for that spot) but it’s upper echelon and one I love, not least for the intrigue – is it a great wine, or almost but for how the delectable fruit was handled with oak? And like some legendary romances or Jane Austen thing, it wasn’t love at first sight or without ambivalence and subplots as it has evolved.

From a very good year. The vineyard sprung back from the frost devastation of 07 to deliver the largest crop at that time, absorbing a notably (notoriously) hot summer.

Similar colour to my last note almost 2 years ago. Purple core, with decided fade on the rim (up to a centimetre or so).

A spicy, bunched, complex nose. Fruit and oak spicy, greengage plum, tarragon or fennel, pepper, raspberry, boysenberry. Lots of aromas competing for your attention, a dusty oak note receding like the last trumpet call at post. I could sit with the nose a long time, longer than I could meditate with my woeful self.

The palate is a silk slipper. So fine, so delightful and playful, waltzing across Texas tonight (check out Emmylou Harris’s version on her brilliant Wrecking Ball, you’ll get the drift). More raspberries, dusty spices, charcuterie touches, and crystalline acid trail across the palate. Fresh yet mature.

Does it retain the fruit intensity to see out the 22 month oak birthmark? That’s the nagging question that keeps me coming back, trying to crack the code. The romantic in me thinks so. The realist thinks it 50:50. The 2006, the maiden Cka Syrah, also had 22 months or so in oak. It’s very good, a fave, but walks the line.

While I’d prefer a touch less oak to let the almost delicate fruit disport its naked self, this is a case where the oak plays an honourable role. It provides savouriness, texture and grunt to the fine fruit. As Townes Van Zandt sang, ‘I’ll miss the system here, the bottom’s low and the treble’s clear’.

All up, a study in how to use oak. It reminds me of what Duane Coates is doing in the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale, in a different climatic context and inspired by different influences. With the right touch, vintage and fruit, it works. On balance, I think so here with the 08. It’s great now but should offer more subtle delights as it merges into its twilight (5 or perhaps 10 years on). Not better than now. Just another intriguing stage in its life story. Oh to have a magnum of it.

2nd bottle. 3 hr decant in horn. Cab glasses.
More refined than previous bottle 8 months earlier. To me, I found the previous racy acidity more interesting, which is not to knock this now, which is likely more appealing to most. Beautiful, restrained fruit; good acidity (just not crazy like before), good balance across the palate. I'm going to pick up the 2021 and 2022 to see if in their younger years those also exhibit the same characteristics previously seen in the younger 2019. Will report back :)

Popped and poured. Delicious - classic cool climate shiraz. Dark berry, leather, hint of smoke, lovely nose, good length. Very smooth with slight acidity. Finished it off the next night after putting in the fridge in a smaller bottle. No worse, no better. Question is, is it worth ~3 O'Riadas? A moot point as I now have none of either!

Deeply coloured, bright red with black core.
Bright, intense fragrance. Dark spice, red berries, blood plum, damson, rich cassis.
Fruit flavours drive the impression, rich and sweet, but with excellent structure, finessed, lithe, refined. Primary fruits still set the profile, gentle secondary flavours only, youthful. Hints of dark tar spice, licorice, graphite. Silky, stylish and delicious.
